  1. I have never been on a chartered cruise, but heard about them. Well I am now on one because a company gave it as a perk and I am so frustrated. I was asked to pick my room and pay the upgrade and that was all. Help! We are diamond+ and wonder if we will get points and benefits for this chartered cruise. I know it is not until December, but I am used to planning etc. Who do I speak with or contact to get any information? Thanks for any info you can give me.

gottogocruisin, I'm not sure this is still the case or applies in your situation, but we were told our kids would have our status (Diamond), even though we've cruised far more often than they have. And sure enough, that is the case. We were on the Harmony earlier this year and my son, who hasn't cruised in quite a while and would never have reached that status on his own, was indeed Diamond. He was in a separate cabin, so didn't have to buy the drink package, but he got all the Diamond perks, including access to the Diamond Lounge and his three free drinks per evening on his card.

This is only her 2nd cruise so I am sure she does not qualify, but thanks for telling me. I will, as Biker19 suggested, call when the price is down lower. The last cruise my husband and I took, the price came down until 3 weeks prior to boarding. We didn't need it but I was watching it to know how to book this one.

Tip: Download Royal IQ for your phone and iPad at home.  We downloaded it on two devices at home.  When we got to the ship, we tried to put it on DH’s phone, but it failed due to needing a wifi connection for the large app.  It may have something to do with settings for our Verizon Cellular...

    Royal IQ:

If you have questions about how it works, feel free to ask, but here are some screenshots that are somewhat self-explanatory.  You create an account using your name, room number and birth year:

When you tap on the compass, you can see the Cruise Compass activities for the day.  We found one time to be inaccurate, so double check your paper copy if you are really interested in the activity.  When you tap on the arrow by the activity, it gives you the option to add it to your calendar:

Any reservations you made at home show up in this calendar, and it includes members of your party that plan to attend the activity.  For example, the colored squares by Grease show that DH and I attended, while the squares by the ice show indicate that all three of us would be attending:

Tip:  If you and your friends have iPhones, the messenger glitch still applies.  DH and I can message each other through the iPhone messenger, using the free Royal Caribbean wifi.

You have a great tutorial but I am not too good at downloading the Royal IQ. Please tell me how to get this started and then I can do it. Sorry everyone else who knows how, but I am "older" and into this as a newbee.

Loving your review. Thanks for taking the time to do this.

  4. We were recently on Radiance and had the privilege of being D+ after several, many, several cruises meaning it has taken time and on Radiance we were allowed into the lounge for D+ and above. One night we decided to go into the D lounge and were totally interrogated by the concierge. Not only was he doing his job he was totally rude about it. Looking back on it Mr. Bathrobe guy would never have gotten in there.

I agree it is not the bar staff problem but if this is a special place for people who have earned it then where is the person in charge. That sure disappoints me. As Asctony said we did earn that right and I was thrilled when I did." How do we know that he was not rude, mean or violent. I don't think we were there so do we know.

I love the fact that I am in a D, D+ place that we can have drink and snacks and be able to meet others that have worked hard to become members. I hope I meet some of you there, but if I see bathroom guy I will leave.

  5. It sounds like many have similar problems. A couple of years ago I was going on a cruise with my friends. When we got in the line to board I took my passport out and handed it to the lady and she said this is not you. I had taken my husbands passport. They took me to a room to straighten it out. I was told that if my husband could fax a couple of my birth certificate it would be OK. Of course my birth certificate was in the safety deposit box at the bank. Yes, I did make the cruise by just barley. No way would they take a copy. I definitely open my passport prior to leaving home to make sure I have my own. The whole story is humorous now but it was a nightmare then.

  6. As far as I know, the same amenities are still available.

I suggest you call C&A and have them read off every option, making sure to repeat any that you didn't quite hear clearly.

Bob I called the other day and I was told that they would give you what you asked for on the last cruise unless you changed it. I asked how do I change it if I don't know what there is to choose from. I asked if they would send me a list so I could choose because I did not want the cheese and fruit I had last time. She said something like they have wine and you know a beach towel and then was silent. I gave up and told her to put down the beach towel. I will see the Loyalty Ambassador when we get on the cruise.

I cannot wait to read your review. It is because of you that we will leave the end of August. When you reviewed the last time I printed out everything and couldn't get enough, but it sure has helped us get the best out of our time in Alaska. I will follow along with your review and hopefully will know that planning through you was the best.

  8. I’m glad you got it, a few question what’s your C&A level, is it per person or just 200$ to get the upgrade and also when if your sailing n ship?

I got the same email and just trying to figure out my chances.

We are D+. It is just $200 for both. We sail the end of August. Just keep hoping. I had about given up when I got the call.

  9. They called you for a freebie upgrade? What is your selection in your profile?

Mine is set to automatic upgrade. I don't get a call, email..nada..zip when I get the free upgrade. It just appears on my paper work, luggage tags, etc.

No, I got an email about a month of two ago asking me if I wanted to be put on the list for an upgrade to a JS for $200. I checked yes and thought maybe it would not happen because it has been so long but today I got the call. I don't think they looked at my profile but I had asked there too. they did say if they call and couldn't get the person they would move on to the next person on the list. So glad I was home when they called!

  10. I totally think you'll be fine. Explorer was Alaska--and those itineraries are good for early risers since the sun is up so early and if you want to see the glaciers, you're out there early. Windjammer closes early, so you won't have noise from there in the evening, and like I said, we didn't hear it in the morning either, but we were up having coffee by 7 am at the latest (and on our deck looking for whales, lol)

We are doing the land portion first and leaving from Seward. We will also be ready to see what we can see from our balcony. Really excited and like you we will be ready to hit windjammer when it opens.

  11. I took advantage of an upsell on a JS on Oasis in 2014. For me having the roomier bathroom, walk-in closet and bigger balcony was worth it, but then again, it was a couple of women traveling together. :D I just sailed on Explorer last month and our stateroom was directly under the Windjammer and we didn't hear any noise. I know it's a different class of ship, but hopefully it's not bothersome on Oasis class either. I'm on Allure next May, on deck 14 right under the Beach Pool.....pretty sure that will be noisy, but we went with it anyway.

Thanks for the encouragement. This is actually Radiance in Alaska to Vancouver. We are early risers anyway so it may be just fine. Hope I am not just convincing myself :)

  12. I got the call today and it was from the number rockmom said. It was upgrade to a JS and the lady said that all the rooms are suites on deck 10. We were on the port side deck 7 and now we are on the starboard. I always ask what is above us and I didn't and now I am getting nervous as I looked in my RC book and it is the Windjammer. No wonder it wasn't sold. Please set my mind at ease and tell me I didn't make a mistake. I still think for $200 and double points that I will be OK. I am going to surprise my husband but I don't want it to be a "real" surprise with a noise room.

  13. I got an email a couple of weeks ago to upgrade to a JS for $200 on Radiance. Today I got another one saying they wanted to give me a quick update and then gave the phone number of 866-562 XXXX and to watch for the phone call. They will call only once and then move on to the next person. On the original I said yes to if I wanted to be considered because you can always decline it if you do get the call and don't want to upgrade.

    Call - please call!!!

  14. Thanks for take no time to read & post. I know it's several years old but most info is still relevant with pricing being being the main change.

OMG I can't believe that it has been this long since your Alaska trip. I printed out everything you said and did and was sure that I would have no questions because - where were you now!!!!! I did order the tour saver book and your comment was to book as soon as you got it because of the limit on some tours. I do not have it yet, but I am wondering how can I plan to do something that we want when we have no idea about the land portion of the cruise. We took 6B and want to do some of the excursions you talked about. When will RCI tell us what they are offering for the days we are in Alaska prior to the cruise? We are leaving for the land portion August 27, 2018 flying into Fairbanks. Please let me know what I might do at this time. Final payment is not due until June. If you do not mind please email me at yaskins1@gmail.com. thanks so much.

  15. I can not wait for my cruise to Alaska in August/September. Search around for those who have written long reviews about their adventures and you would be hook as we are. We are doing a land tour first and everyone that I read said to do that first and then take the cruise southward. I am a planner so I have so much information because of those who have already done this. If possible do a land tour too.

Good luck with your search. We leave on August 26th in Fairbanks for the land cruise and then board the ship on August 31st for the ship cruise.

  16. Kay thanks so much for posting. You are going to love Alaska. Even looking at the pictures is no comparison to actually seeing it in person! I'm not one to re-visit places I've already been (too many other places I need to see!) but Alaska was the exception. I hope to cruise there again someday and if not when we hit the road in our RV after retirement I'd love to spend a month there.

2018 will be here before you know it!

So glad you saw my post. Thanks for responding and thank you for all you do to help all of us with our future cruises. Would love to talk to you about all your adventures. Wish we were close. I am so glad that it got onto page one after all these years and hope the so many read it over and over as so many of us have.

  17. Cindy this post may be a surprise to your fabulous trip to Alaska, but I saved your total vacation in my favorites and I have read it numerous times. It has been my inspiration to make sure we do go to Alaska. We are now planning to do this in September 2018. As soon as Royal releases their Alaska cruises we are ready to book thanks for your posts. Again thanks so much for sharing your cruise.
