  1. Sailing Carnival in October, 8 of us total flying into HOU the day before (friday). We've never sailed out of Galveston, always Florida, so I'm looking for the most cost effective way to get 8 people from point A to point B and back again. We will be flying back out the saturday morning we return to port. I've considered renting a van for the week, all help is greatly appreciated.

  2. Spread everyones clothes out among all the bags, so if a bag gets lost everyone still has clothes to wear.

Use neon colored zipties to lock your checked luggage so you can tell if someone has been in it.

Put a piece of paper with name, ship, sailing date, room etc in each bag so if your outside tag falls off they know whose it is.

  3. Please don't feed the fish any non native foods to them. It's bad news. If you must feed the fish, sporting goods stores has fish food you can bring.

It was the locals in the Caribbean that suggested it actually. Plain ones are basically wheat flour, oats, corn meal type ingredients. They are far less harmful to the fish than the chemicals (lotion, sunscreen, shampoo, soap, makeup etc) we wear on our bodies.

Good read on the power strips, I'll just stick to the plug in type extra outlet adapters.

  4. I'm not understanding the "no surge protector type powerstrips". The surge protection is for what is plugged into the strip not the outlet the strip is plugged into. If the surge protector pops it kills power to the strip not the outlet. We always bring them.

Some very helpful tips I've learned over the years.

Spread each others clothes out amongst ALL the luggage, that way if someones bag gets lost, they still have clothes.

Use bright colored zip-ties to lock your luggage bags before dropping off at the airport. This way you know if someone has gone through your bag.

Put a piece of paper inside each luggage bag with name, address, ship, room etc so God forbid if your tag falls off the outside they still know where its going.

Tip your porter at the dock WELL

We use water wallets while we are snorkeling, water sports etc so id's, cards etc are secure around our necks. And I always bring ziploc bags and plain dog biscuits (fish love them while snorkeling).

Scan copies of EVERYTHING, passport, credit cards, birth certificates, licenses, cruise docs then email them to yourself so you can access them anywhere in the world.

And like someone said earlier "patience and a sense of humor", too often people forget those working on cruise ships are people too and mistakes will be made. The ships crew work ungodly hours for little pay. Most spend months away from their families, dealing with a snotty, hateful passenger is the last thing the deserve. Treat them with some courtesy and respect and a friendly attitude and roll with the punches, it will make your vacation a whole lot better ;)

  5. I think we had this conversation before. What I found; When I talked to the taxi moderator and asked if he could match the deal, he did. AND for us 4 pp @$2 plus a $2 tip adds $10. Why would you want to do that? SO, after getting stood up by the private tour operator I'll stick by my opinion.

Not sure who your tour company was but we loved Bodden Tours in Roatan. Great people, wonderful tour!

  6. Silc,

Go see Navine or Varsha at Grand Jewelers. They are absolutely wonderful people to deal with and will have no problem finding something for your budget. Some of our very good friends have been going down there on a regular basis for many years and they turned us onto them last year and after searching around at many stores we ended up back at Grand because of their friendliness and prices couldn't be beat. Their address is 7 Main St. in St. Thomas and I think you can check their website at grandjewelers.com. We'll be back in June for a week stay on the island and will definitely be stopping in to get my wife some more bling. ;)

  7. Actually, the information I received from Carnival for our April '08 cruise is that the push back of the date that cruise passengers will need a passport is due to the fact that the government is planning to issue a smaller Pass Port type card and the cost will be significately less - approximately $50 per card.

I am waiting for that to be implemented before I spend $400 on passports for a family of 4.

This is the statement from Carnival in my documents:

The U.S. Government will require that all of our guests, including U.S. Citizens be in possession of a valid passport when traveling on any Carnival Cruise. This requirement will become effective no later than June 1, 2009. This effective date may be moved to an earlier date pending the U.S. Government's implementation of new identification cards (PASScards) that will provide a less expensive alternative form of documentation. For travel by air, the passport deadline will remain January 8, 2007.

I'm holding a passport application as I type. And as far as the smaller passport card goes:

    Electronic Passport Statement:

"The State Department will begin issuing a new type of passport containing an embedded electronic chip and called an "Electronic Passport". The new passport will continue to be proof of the bearer's United States citizenship/nationality and identity, and will look and function in the same way as a passport without a chip. The addition of an electronic chip in the back cover will enable the new passport to carry a duplicate electronic copy of all information from the data page. The new passport will be usable at all ports-of-entry, including those that do not yet have electronic chip readers.

Use of the electronic format will provide the traveler the additional security protections inherent in chip technology. Moreover, when used at ports-of-entry equipped with electronic chip readers, the new passport will provide for faster clearance through some of the port-of-entry processes.

Issuance of this new passport will be phased in incrementally. It is expected that by late 2006 nearly all U.S. passports will be issued in this new format. The new passport will not require special handling or treatment, but like previous versions should be protected from extreme bending and from immersion in water. The electronic chip must be read using specially formatted readers, and is not susceptible to unauthorized reading.

The cover of the new passport will be printed with a special symbol representing the embedded chip. The symbol will appear in port-of-entry areas where the electronic passport can be read.

If your referring to the credit card size passport, you are still going to be required to have the main passport but the cc size one can be bought for an additional fee and used at checkpoints, etc but obviously you still need the big passport to stamp, and they won't be available for some time. Save yourself some headaches and money and go ahead and get them now imho.
