  1. We were there Friday with no advance booking. Went to the taxi stand (Puerta Maya) and said we wanted to go to Punta Sur and to the lighthouse and spend some time on the beach. Then back into San Miguel. Total of about 2-2.5 hours. Paid $80 for 4 people and the driver sat in the van at the lighthouse and read while we explored. Admission to the lighthouse was $5 each. Extra charge for the swimming beach ($10/ea, I think, we didn't do it) as the beach area near the lighthouse is sea turtle habitat and off limits.

Mike had recommending just talking with the dispatcher at the taxi stand when he let me know his guys were not available.

  2. Hey, you'll be there the same day we will! I got the same reply from Mike last week. He suggested going to the taxi dispatcher at the port and telling him what you're looking for and he can hook you up with a driver. You don't get the reassurance of someone with a great reputation here, but it's a cruise, be adventurous!

We haven't decided for sure what we're going to do, possibly hire a driver, though after looking at the CozumelMyCozumel website, it's tempting to just catch a cab into town (from Puerta Maya) and explore the shops and eateries a bit back from the waterfront. Everything I read indicates this is a VERY safe, friendly place for getting off the beaten path. Our last visit was limited to swimming with the dolphins and doing the sidewalk shuffle, but we loved it.

  3. We were at the cameo factory Tuesday last week. Wife asked if there were any in the $50 range and they pulled out a try of a half-dozen or so and they were about the size of a quarter, I think. Not mounted. I didn't feel they were particularly overpriced, but we didn't purchase because we had no idea how difficult or expensive mounting one would be. (Plus, wife had her heart set on a sterling/tanzanite/opal/diamond ring we finally bought in Cozumel). But we did enjoy browsing. It's not a big place, but there's some beautiful work there.
