We recently responded to this same question.  The last time we visited Santorini was August 2021 and the boats to Oia were running at that time.  We have always pointed out that those boats are privately operated so one can never be 100% certain that they will be operating.  The boats do not normally run on a real schedule but simply go when the operator thinks they have enough folks.  This means you might wait 5 min or an hour.   If the boats were not operating your "Plan B" would be to simply take the cable car (it is actually a series of cars linked together) up to Fira.  We have been to the island many times and there was only one time when the boats were not operating which was because it was in early March prior to the main tourist season.  From the top cable car station it is possible to walk around Fira or make your way to the bus/taxi area.

The issue some have with the cable car is simply a fear of heights and/or cable cars.  But this is a modern system and the unusual linked car design does seem to give folks a better sense of safety versus the traditional single car systems found elsewhere.

I want to stress that visiting Oia and Fira mean a lot of walking.  Moving around these towns with a mobility device (such as wheelchair or scooter) can be very difficult.  The good news is that there are plenty of places where one can sit and rest (not to mention have a glass of wine, beer, coffee, etc).

Over the years DW and I have altered our own methods of touring the island.  Sometimes we just do a day in Oia and Fira and other times we have rented a car (they must usually be reserved well in advance) so we can have more flexibility to visit the towns, beach, and perhaps a winery.

Thank you Hank for this information.  I am a first time visitor to Greece and have a call at Santorini.  I am on Holland America and traveling solo. After reading your recommendations I plan to book the full tour offered by Holland that begins once we tender to Athinios and then includes visits to

    • Profitis Ilias Mountain, Oia village, Panagia Episkopi Church
    • A visit to a local winery
    • Traditional Greek fare for lunch in the quaint village of Pyrgos

We then return to Fira where we take cable cars back down to the tender.  I am not a big fan of the cable car, but do not see myself walking down!  If you have any other suggestions or ideas please share.  Also, if you have traveled to other Greek islands, I would love your insight.

  2. "Traditional Russian Delicacies"..LOLOLOL  Love it...thank you for the information.

I am solo traveler so a bit nervous booking a tour off the cruise line, but so many people have recommended Alla tours and TJ Tours..kind of rethinking.  Costs are far less than the cruise line and itineraries are more inclusive.  Princess, for example, only visits Catherine Palace in the evening and includes a dinner at the palace...not really interested in a dinner though I want to see Catherine Palace...I have never been to the Baltic area, this is probably my only time, so do not want to miss "major" sites, but also don't want to do dinner at the Palace!

I appreciate all the comments.  Very helpful.

  3. Hello all,

I am sailing from Copenhagen May 6, 2020 on Princess.  I am traveling from Florida, USA and would like to arrive a day or two early and take a tour of Copenhagen that includes either a tour and drop off at the ship or simply a tour and I will find my way to the ship.

I prefer a group tour rather than a "hop on and off" type visit.  I understand there is lots of walking which I enjoy, but prefer the security of a group tour that picks up at hotel or close by.

Any tour company suggestions and any suggestions are greatly appreciated.  Looking forward to this very exciting trip.

    Thank you!

  4. I am considering booking my flight to Amsterdam from Tampa directly with HAL, however they only quote Business, First and Economy, not Premium Economy.  Does anyone have any experience with this?  Not going till May 2020 so I have time, but curious.  I was able to book Premium Economy with Celebrity to fly to Barcelona, however used a travel agent for that cruise.

    Appreciate any assistance.

    Thank you!

I was wondering about driving from Florida to board a ship in Baltimore too.  As you said, in addition to the weather issues, there are so many more choices of ships in Florida.  Perhaps it's because they are doing a B2B2B?  Maybe something special about that they could not do out of Florida?  I hope so!

We are coming from the west coast of Florida to Baltimore for a 2019 New Years Eve cruise on the Grandeur because we are sailing with family coming from New York and Virginia.  Trying to decide whether to drive or fly.  We have the time to drive since we are retired but curious if anyone has an suggestions.  If we drive, we are looking for a stay, park and sail deal too.

  6. We are sailing on Oosterdam on Sept 17 and wondering if we should do the excursion from the ship or use the tour I_Shinji took with Juneau Shore Trips. Seems the same itinerary. We have never been to Alaska, never on Oosterdam (but other HAL ships). Any advice fellow cruisers??

  7. Thanks for posting about a great ship and a great itinerary. I completely agree. Planning a trip to Alaska next year with my sister. I have only cruised the Caribbean so do not know anything about Alaska, but want a good ship. Taking a look at Celebrity now. Love HAL and Princess and RC but Celebrity seems to offer both ship and itinerary.
