  1. We were there pre=COVID; two suggestions:

    1. First thing off the ship take a taxi up to the Fort. That way you can see the early ceremonies and then take the tour. Worth it. Then you can walk, down, the hill to the boardwalk; no need for a taxi.

    2. On the boardwalk we went on the WW2 Canadian Corvette exhibited, HMCS Sacacville. Really great. No tours available when we were there but were lucky to bump into the son of a sailor who had severed on her in WW2 and he gave a tour. Just an exceptional experience.

  2. Ran across one yesterday that threw me briefly. I tried to book an excursion with a 9:00 departure. In my cart then when I tried to check out it said no longer available. I assumed the tour was canceled; turned out the 9:00 time was sold out; I booked the one leaving 30 min later.

Would have been better if NCL had said "try another time slot"; that would have saved me some angst.

  3. Regarding my OP.

NCL chat gave me more of an opinion than an answer the other day. But I had time today, called, and was transferred to an excursion specialist. When pressed if she had a time breakdown of the excursion she looked for it and found there is a 15min photo stop on Cadillac Mountain.

That's the info I was looking for.

Thanks to all who chipped into my post. It's been interesting.

  4. Out of curiosity I Googled Bar Harbor:

    Small town, population 5,535

    Median household income $67,245

Thinking about the voters who passed the referendum w 58% "for" (1,780/1273), doesn't feel like a small, "wealthy", group could sway much. Considering the size of the town that's actually an amazing voter turn-out.

The rest of us can only watch and wish them well in their choices.

  5. We're in the process of booking a new cruise with NCL. This will be our 13th with NCL; over 30 cruises overall.

    We've always used their insurance

Since we're getting older and I have diabetes I looked at the coverage a little closer and called both NCL and AON regarding pre-existing conditions.

I'd expected to find that as long as you purchased the coverage at booking you'd get a waiver on the issue. I found the conversations with both reps less than clear; but with the feeling that no waiver is given and that if I had an issue it would be evaluated at the time of a claim.

I found that unacceptable; I'd be better getting insurance through a third party (John Hancock, AIG, etc) where a waiver is given up front as long as you purchase the policy at (near) the time of booking.

Anyone have thoughts / experience with this?

  6. Just to give perspective was our 32d cruise (multiple lines); our 8th to Bermuda on NCL. We're both are 75.

The Prima is a beautiful ship, we loved it.

We think NCL tried to address a couple of complex issues and made headway on them, The solutions naturally required some tradeoffs so where solutions hit someone's hot-buttons we hear complaints. The items addressed were: folks feeling crowded on large ships and cruise demographics shifting towards multi generational, multi ethnic profiles.

    Layout
The deck layouts are substantially different than other NCL designs. Instead of long linear hallways, forward to aft, they put some"bends" in there. The result is a more "cozy" feel; you don't see large groups of folks ahead of you as you do on say a Breakaway class ship. Same in the new Atrium. The multiple venues for food and entertainment are spread out more, across many decks, so again you don't feel crowded or see large groups of folks. But getting to a specific venue does require more effort / thought.

Since it is different from other NCL ships I'd recommend you print out a copy of it's deck plan brochure and use it as a quick reference until you're acclimated. https://www.ncl.com/sites/default/files/prima-ship-guide-082522.pdf?&cid=EM_MKD_NA_PRO_EML_NA_EML_SHIPPRIMA_523557-2023428_NA_NA

We never encountered the issues many on CC have presented. Elevators were fine. and enough of them The buffet area was busy but we always found a seat and never had long lines. We booked shows and restaurants prior to boarding so no worries there (Thx NCL). We had two meals in the main dining room  Hudson's, food and service were great and it's wrap around windows design was perfect. We ate in Indulge once, ordering off the tablet was interesting and the food came out amazingly fast and was delicious. It's desert venue Coco's was super. We loved Hasuki.

    Entertainment / Activities
Unfortunately the Donna Summer show we'd reserved was cancelled and we couldn't make the replacement show. The diverse passenger demographic presented NCL with complications regarding entertainment; they needed to serve many profiles. To they're credit they had: game shows, comedy, karaoke, Latin music and dance, bingo, and Rock. We could have preferred more Rock but  that's just us.

Syd Normans was a great venue with an amazing band. The venue replicates a rock club and the whole package works. But as such you need to get in and find a place to sit or stand or lean on the bar. There's always congestion at the entrance, just work past the hesitant folks and you'll be fine.  It is not a theater so those requiring a seat are disappointed.

We noted there were no pianos on the Prima. We did miss sitting and listening / interacting with an entertainer after a busy day  with an adult beverage (just a thought).

The theater was a great design it had 740, very comfortable sets. The front rows folded back under (like bleachers in a gym) and it allowed them to reconfigure the resulting space into a dance floor in about 15min; brilliant!

My initial raceway session was canceled due to rain so I rescheduled for Saturday at 3. We were the last to race before it shut down due to rain on Sat; A great ride. Rain also shut down the two dry slides so never got to try them. Next time I'll do all these before Bermuda.

I did the behind the scenes tour ($149). Well worth it since it includes a bridge stop; as opposed to the free Latitudes tour. We were super fortunate that the Bridge tour was given by Captain Kevin. He was obviously proud of his command and spent considerable time answering our questions. The tour was a highlight of the cruise.

    In Bermuda
There's a brew pub in the dockyard, the Frog & Onion, we visit every day in port even if it's only for a beer and a desert. Russell is a great host.  The atmosphere is brilliant, housed in the mid 18th century cooperage.  They have great food & deserts. Recommend the gingerbread bread pudding and chocolate brownie & whiskey  trifle;  I always look forward to their great amber ale; maybe a Bermuda coffee after desert. .

Around the corner is an Arts Center, local artists works, very well done and reasonable prices. We always stop and always find a new treasure.

Thursday was time for a trip to Horseshoe Bay. We used the mini-buses near the dock to go to there and back; it costs $7 each way. We rented 2 lounges and an umbrella for $45 and relaxed. Food and drink are available along with a well serviced bath house.

Norwegian's free ferry to St Georges is a great benefit. Docked adjacent to the ship it relieved all the hassle of getting ferry tickets, etc. We love to walk around and shop then have lunch at the White Horse. The Wharf is a great option for an adult beverage near the ferry pick up area.

Bermuda is a pretty island with super friendly people. Do some homework before you go and it'll make you're experience much more enjoyable.

The ship was sold out so embarkation was busy but very efficient. We were on the ship by 12:00, she sailed at 6PM.

We had a balcony cabin which was a bit larger than Breakaway class ships. The balcony was a little larger and its chairs were a great new design and super comfortable. There was a lot more storage options than in the past cabins.

Disembarking was a breeze. Had Latitudes tags, called at 8:00; were on the street 9:05.

Net-net the cruise was great, the Prima is a great ship with an amazing staff. We look forward to our next voyage.

  7. The standard Disney policy did not cover pre-existing conditions; I have diabetes so had to go third party.

There are many sites available that will give you rates comparing various providers. Providers vary in what they cost and cover considerably.

Be aware some policies are secondary to your normal ins. Also they vary in terms of max benefits. Some offer "cancel for any reason" coverage (50 / 75% depending).

  8. The forward section of deck 15 is essentially a library area.. Lots of nooks and crannies for privacy. At the very front of the ship a bar and Starbucks with a great view forward. Front a has food setup where you can get coffee / and danish in the AM. Port and starboard have areas with setups mid day snacks. The deck is not advertised much and consequently quiet and generally underutilized.

  9. it is confusing; actually Bermuda has their requirement, NCL has theirs.

You can satisfy Bermuda with a NAAT test, etc 4 days ahead.

But w or wo that you need an antigen, etc. test 2 days before for NCL.

We used the mail order test from Inspire that NCL partners with.

One thing we did that cost me >$500. I called Bermuda to verify receipt / acceptance. Both times I was on hold about an hour and a half. I forgot it was a toll call to my cell. Don't make the same mistake; or arange for a day pass on your cell to mitigate cost.

  10. We were on a Princess cruise in September. Couldn't book the shuttle ahead of the cruise but as soon as the ship left NYC They offered the shuttle bus to the "city center" for $15.95 pp. The drop off / pick up was near Quincy market on Old Atlantic ave, between Milk & Central. It worked out great, we walked around the North end, ate at the Green Dragon, & back to the cruise terminal easily on time.

  11. A great cruise. Love the Escape's vibe. Boarding was great, at pier 10:30, checked in @11, boarding started immediately, on ship 11:10.

We had a mini suite cabin; plenty of room w a great shower. Had room service breakfasts each morning; a wonderful way to start the day. My omelet always arrived hot and the coffee great. We had the UDP package (so convenient), free wifi (good), and three restaurants (did Cagney's, Le Bistro (one of the best meals on the ship), and Teppanyaki (always fun)).

Loved the shows & staff. Got a list of shows once we boarded from customer service (also posted on CC w dailies). Choir of Man was really different, made reservation just after we boarded. We both enjoyed it. Loved the Howl at the Moon dueling pianos. These guys are amazing; we went whenever it was in Headliners and stayed till 1 or 2.

The ship was full but always found 2 deck chairs & room in pool/hot tub. It was a bit cool/windy so using the maim pool was out but stayed on deck to watch activities there;which was fun. Spent more time in the H2O area in the back of the ship. Adults only, much less wind, quiet.

Gym was great, reasonable waits for treadmill, machines, etc.

The ropes course was a hoot; larger than the Breakaway's

    Love Bermuda
There's a brew pub in the dockyard, the Frog & Onion, excellent amber ale. Around the corner is an Arts Center, local artists works, very well done and reasonable prices. Plenty to do in the Dockyard, the Bermuda Museum is there if you have the time to explore.

First day was shopping in the Dockyard; I brought the loot back to the ship. Then we took the shuttle to Horseshoe bay ($7/pp/each way). Beautiful spot, chairs, food, drinks, and changing facilitates available there.

Went to St Georges the second day; Norwegian's free ferry is a great benefit. Docked adjacent to the ship it relieved all the hassle of getting ferry tix, etc. We love to go there shop then have lunch at the White Horse Inn, feeding scraps to the fish is much fun. Third day was shopping, the arts center, and a last meal at the Bonefish Restaurant.

Bermuda is a pretty island, do some homework before you go and it'll cut down on confusion there.

Getting off the ship was very good. Had Latitudes yellow time slot called 8:45; just before we entered the pier I realized I'd left my laptop back in the room. Ran back, still was on the street at 10:00. We always use the porters in the luggage hall, much easier.

  12. Great review, Thx for posting. We had gone on the Regal Sept 29; great cruise. One item you mentioned about the wine gave me a smile though. I'm usually a beer drinker, but on the last night I decided to order a glass of wine with dinner. I ordered a Pinot Noir, the waiter came back sorry we're out; so I ordered a different vineyard's, sorry out. OK ordered a Riesling, out. Ordered a Merlot , out. He advised at that point the wine steward offered to open a bottle of pinot noir; I declined and ordered a Grolsch; which they brought; and we all relaxed. We had a great cruise, sounds like Princess needs to get it's wine act together though.

  13. We thought we'd pass along a few thoughts on our recent trip on the Regal Princess.

Embarkation was easily the best experience ever (note-this was our 27th cruise). We arrived at the terminal at noon; earlier than our assigned 2:00 slot. Checked in by 12:20 and were on the ship 12:30, incredibly smooth.

A couple of notes on the internet. We had pre-purchased unlimited internet for $59. Since it was to early to go to the room we relaxed at the Bellini Bar and I tried to log in; Bad move, I was presented with a screen asking for birthday, etc. and go nowhere. What I should have done is waited to go to the room and retrieved a card with my validation code and instructions. When I then went to the login screen I now knew not to enter my birthday; rather to scroll down to the bottom of the screen and enter my validation code. With my iPhone in airplane mode I never had to log out/in; and connectivity was great. The internet cafe was located on deck 5 staffed with very helpful folks. I downloaded the Concierge app and found it very helpful throughout the cruise. The other "medallion apps" did not work so I deleted them. Overall the internet on the Regal Princess was ubiquitous and faster than I had on recent NCL & RC trips.

We had a mini-suite on deck 10; c243. The room was great and we felt it was larger than similar cabins on NCL's Escape and RC's Anthem (similar vintage ships). Our room steward Alfred did a great job and was always friendly and helpful. I do wish Princess would bring back towel animals though; they were missed.

Ship - The ship was great, interiors were a wonderfully executed blend of: rich woods, lights, polished metal, and crystals. Our captain was Tim Stringer; our cruise director Dan Falconer. Dan did a great job and we especially liked is morning TV show which included a very interesting segment with the captain explaining sea / port facts, conditions, etc. We were served our first Bellini by Sebastion and over the course of the week it seemed like he was serving everywhere, in the casino, etc.

We did not purchase the unlimited drinks card; with so much tim in the 5 ports it just didn't work for us. We did however find the coffee card a good value. I covered 15 specialty drinks and unlimited brewed coffee. The cafe on deck 5 became one of our favorite spots.

Newcastle Brown Ale was available on top in the Wheelhouse bar and on  the pool deck in the bar by the pizza venue.

I typically enjoy production shows in the theater; my wife not so much. Princess really hit the mark by producing top notch shows; 45 min long.

We ate in the dining rooms three times; I highly recommend the Chocolate Journeys deserts.

Newport took a Princess tour - The Breakers and Marble house. Enjoyed it, our your guide was very informative, we were back at the dock 12:30. We were looking for a waterfront restaurant and chose "The Point" at the Ann Street Pier. I had the lobster dinner, my wife the salmon; both were excellent. Shopped a bit then tendered back to the ship; a long line but it moved pretty fast.

Boston took a Princess tour -Boston Trolley with optional hop on/off (2hrs). A great tour with one of the best driver / narrators we've had. Very informative and lots of local color. The tour covered the major hot spots in Boston and briefly visited Cambridge ac cross the river. The only hop off spot was at the end of the tour at Faneuil Hall, or you could continue back to the ship. We hopped off and had lunch at the Green Dragon (reputed to be a meeting place for the Sons of Liberty). Shopped in Faneuil Hall / Quincy Market then took the complementary (from the Trolley company) shuttle back to the ship.

Bar Harbor took a Princess tour - Acadia National Park Express, Small Group Tour (2.5 hr). Good choice, really great driver / tour guide. Hit all the major high points: Long road loop, Cadillac Mountain, Thunder Hole. The tour guide gave great local background and historical info. Back at Bar Hrbor has lunch at Stewan's Lobster Pond for an excellent waterfront lobster dinner. Then browsed the shopping district and stopped in Paddy's Irish Pub and restaurant for a beer on the way back to the tender. The Pub was great and the restaurant looked like a good place of a meal.

Saint John took a Princess tour - ST John highlightd, Bay of Fundy and light lunch (6.5 hr). Turned out to be a good choice. It covered the tops in town then headed out to St Martens (about 40 min). Had wonderful tour guide / driver (Bernadette / Eddie). The caves in St Martens was a highlight stop.

Halifax - focused on the town itself so we did our own thing. Go off the ship early and grabbed a cab up to the Citadel arriving at 9:40. Turned out to be great timing since we saw the changing of the job ceremony (10:00) and a walking tour of the fort (10:10). The walking tour was very informative including firing a rifle and field canon. After the noon canon firing we walked down the hill to look for a waterfront dining option; deciding on Murphy's was a good choice. Enjoyed a 2 lb lobster dinner. Headed back to the ship walking the boardwalk and did some shopping. Was sorry to hear that the HCMS Sackville, a WWI corvette,  I'd wanted to see had been moved for refit weeks earlier. As  kid I loved the old Randolph Scott movie Corvette K-225. We enjoyed walking back to the ship along the boardwalk and were early enough to stop at Garrison Brewery (across from the terminal) to sample a flight of their products. Did a bit more shopping in the terminal building (wish all terminals had such a variety of stores). Had a great day.

The cruise was a winner: great ship and crew mild weather, interesting ports. We' highly recommend the itinerary.
