  1. Thanks for the review and Dailies.

We are sailing on 9/3 and all of these reviews that people post are very helpful.

I have a couple of questions:

    1) Do you know if Clarense (aka "The Chocolate Cowboy") is still the outside bartender at the 5 O’Clock Somewhere Bar? A number of reviews recommended him.

2)Did you see the Magic show? If so, how was it? We had wanted to see the Hypnotist but it looks like she is no longer on the ship :-(

Glad you has a great time. Can't wait to board her!

Chocolate cowboy and Ron were at the 5 o'clock somewhere and they are awesome!

The magic show we saw was really good! And I'm not a big fan of going to shows!

  2. I am doing breakaway next week and did RCL adventure of the seas last month. I paid about $119 for their surf+stream unlimited for the week and was actually able to watch Amazon prime and Netflix on my tablet. I travel solo which is why I like the unlimited option because I use it in my room for background noise and watch before going to sleep. Next week also unfortunately is now going to be a busy time at work, but I just can't wrap my head around spending $239 a week for non-streaming slow internet. If you are offering a sub-par product, at least reflect it in the price you are charging.

Everything else about NCL (except one buffet thing), I actually like better than RCL when going alone. Everyone has their one issue (see water threads, smokey 6-7-8, the new balcony divider thread) this mine :)

It's expensive because it is the slow internet, the more people on it the slower it is. I think they are actually trying to keep users down by charging the prices they do. When it becomes high speed I would expect prices to actually come down similar to how royals did.

  3. Please, please everyone - let's hush up about the upsell process. Simple laws of supply an demand apply especially in the Haven. If more people learn about the process and start calling requesting upsells, it will increase demand. Higher demand for upsells will result in higher rates going forward. Higher rates are not good.

This happened in the past when everyone learned about aft balcony cabins. Once upon a time, these cabins were sold at standard balcony rates. Then, blammo, everyone figured em out, demand soared, and they were assigned a new category with much higher rates.

Please, I beg of you, be smart and stop disseminating information about the upsell process, timing, and 800 number. Let's try to control it and keep it our secret.

    Thank you

And creating a thread about it certainly will not garner any further notice of it....

  4. We're just under 30 days from our sailing. We booked a gty balcony (so no perks). If I called the upsell number and they offered a room at a price that I'm able to live with, do we get any of the perks (UBP, internet, etc)?

    Thank you

No, you keep same free at sea promos as originally booked or in the case of GTY's none.

  5. To me the difference is whether you pay more or not. If you have a guarantee cabin and you get moved into a better category of cabin *for no additional cost* that is an upgrade.

If you reserved or were planning to reserve one type of cabin, but a TA or PCC or even just the website bot convinced you to pay some amount more for a better category of cabin, that is an upsell.

But on CC, I feel like upsell is most often used to mean a TA or PCC offered you a better category of cabin for an additional amount of money that is less than the current price difference between the two cabin categories.

An upsell is a cruise line offer below current prices. For example to go from a balcony to the haven right now for my sailing would be something like $2,500 per person. The upsell department is offering it for $1,000 per person.

Anything done through NCL General sales or a TA would to me be an upgrade.

To me a guarantee assignment would be neither of these.

  6. Hi Matt,

Some that have CC accounts come back after years because they booked a cruise. I see you've been a very busy cruiser since our Legend cruise in 07. Kids are adults now and they wanted to cruise again after years of land vacations.

    Kevin

    Hey Kevin!

Its been quite some time since that Legend cruise but that one always sticks out in my mind because of the GREAT roll call we had!

A lot has changed since then! I'm married and have two kids(3 year old daughter and 1 year old son).

Glad to see you are back at it.

I run a Facebook Cruise group called Cruise Life if you are interested in joining. If you can find it yourself you can just request to join. There may be a number of groups with similar names. If you can't find it you can search for me on Facebook via my email matt7261@yahoo.com

    Great to hear from you.

PS Sorry to hijack this thread!

  7. Has anyone been able to get through to the upsell department yesterday or today? I tried calling around 3 pm EST yesterday and again just now. I was with the "on hold" music and advertisements for about 20 minutes each time and gave up. any previous time I called I got through with in a minute or two. I'm hoping they haven't stopped taking incoming calls...

  8. i called general reservations yesterday and got upgraded from a balcony to a mini-suite at no charge. no need to call a special number - reservations will offer you an upgrade too.

Upgrade and upsell are not the same thing.

In your case you upgraded, the mini-suite going rate must be equal or less than what you paid for a balcony. This can be done at any time and yes can be done through general reservations.

Upsell is a reduced fare which is less than the published rate. Mostly used to fill empty haven cabins a couple weeks before sailing.

  9. I read this in an online interview with NCL President Andy Stuart posted this morning. Do a search for Norwegian Sky news and you can read it.

I found the article now. The person writing the article clearly used the wrong name in that sentence.

They say "Norwegian is currently gearing up to operate the Norwegian Sky in China, which was developed and designed specifically to serve the Chinese vacationer."

The Joy is the ship they are refering to that was developed and designed for the Chinese market.

  10. I'm with you regarding the aft cabins but try to keep it quiet.... we don't want everyone wanting one, do we? My husband and I will be sailing on the Brilliance in 16 days' time and have cabin 8172, a D1 aft cabin with a spacious and totally private balcony that looks out over the wake of the ship. We don't mind the extra walk to get there as the additional exercise helps burn off those naughty calories!

I've narrowed it down to which ever deck 8 aft D1's are available next week when i book :)
