  1. Did Horizon 14 day Transatlantic in May but either too busy doing excursions or too cold outside to look for ship's coin. But since it's the same class as Vista, try checking by the entrance to the Waterworks, down 1 flight of stairs from Serenity.

I have not been on the Horizon yet, but the coin is usually somewhere on the superstructure forward.

  2. If one of your cruise perks is free laundry

Sometime during the cruise I’m on I will put a couple of paper laundry bags and laundry slips in my luggage for my next cruise. As sometimes there not either the bag or laundry slip in the cabin. during the first day I have my travel clothes

ready to send out to be clean

That’s a good idea. I never send stuff out on the first day because I figure the laundry crew is going to be super busy with all the turn-around laundry (sheets, robes, etc) from the previous cruise.

  3. New camera sitting on desk. 23-year-old cat wanders across the window-lit floor meowing like only a deaf old kitty can. New camera turns on much faster than old camera, so I got the shot. Literally a snapshot. The dynamic range of the A6300 is very, very good but the sensor in the new camera is nothing short of amazing. I just clicked Tone Control > Auto and exported it.

I'm not disappointed with the 28-70mm kit lens either.

Good snapshot Dave. Which camera did you use?

  4. How about when you go to work (if you still do) or visiting friends for the day? If a pipe burst just after you leave, it could be hours before you return back home even for a day trip. A lot of water damage can be done in just a few hours. If you don't turn it off whenever you leave, it doesn't help much if you only turn it off for your once a year vacation. All the pipe has to do is burst the minute you drive away to do the damage, even if you are only doing something as mundane as grocery shopping for a few hours.

Our water heater is in the garage. We joined friends for a long day of wine tasting, capped off with dinner and a movie that evening. Sometime while we were away the hot water side of the piping sprung a leak where it connected to the water heater due to a failed fitting, spraying water into the rafters and onto the wall covering, soaking the wall insulation behind it, and drenching all my tools and almost everything stored in the garage on the storage shelves. Hot water does much more damage than cold water. If the leak is just slow enough that the water heater can keep replenishing the hot water flow, you are "steam cleaning" the area with hot water. I remember the insurance adjuster telling me that a continued spray of hot water "melts" many construction materials it comes into contact with, causing much more damage than cold water. I thought that was an interesting word to use, but it was pretty descriptive of what happened to us. We pretty much had to tear out half of the garage and start over. And this after just a day's worth of water damage.

Let’s see, a few hours worth of water damage vs 7 or 8 days of damage. Hmmmmm.

  5. Our excursion was the Old Cartagena Walking Tour which was roughly 3 hours long. We only had 6 hours in Cartagena so it was nice having an excursion that did not take up the entire time in port.

Good review, so far. Did you take a tour of the fort? We were there in 2014 and took a self-guided tour of the fort. What an interesting building. If anyone does the self-guided tour I recommend taking a flashlight. There are many tunnels and hallways to explore that have no light, either artificial or natural. It is good tour with a lot of walking and steep ramps. Thanks for your review.

  6. Is this thread being revived after the issue was settled? At the Captain's Diamond Party on the Glory in June, we heard straight from the Captain and Hotel Director that the family friendly experiment failed miserably and that they re-instated the adult only policy for the aft pool and hot tubs.

Thanks to all who voiced their opinions to Carnival!

That's good to know. When we were on the Breeze July 2nd kids were still allowed in the aft pool. Maybe it will just take time to roll it back on all the ships.

  7. Book a Havana cabin on the Vista or Horizon.

There's no reason that we should have to book a high priced cabin that is only available on two ships to get an adult only pool. Most, if not all Carnival ships have had an adult only pool for years. No reason to change. Kids have the main pool and Waterworks on most ships.

  8. ATT has a plan that allows usage in Mexico and Canada just like in the US.

    Carnival cabin calls are $1.99/minute.

Many smart phones have a WiFi calling function. Has anyone tried it on the ship's WiFi? I wonder if Carnival has it blocked.

  9. Depending on the OP's cell service, phone, and OS version, they could have WiFi calling enabled, which would allow full phone functionality over the ship's WiFi, should the ship's WiFi allow it. No cell carrier charges, but there would be ship WiFi charges.

My Verizon plan gives me the same service in Canada and Mexico that I have here in the States at no extra charge (voice & data) The OP should check with his carrier. Also the WiFi calling should work too if he has access to a good WiFi signal in port.

  10. I do not know how the quality of the pictures from a TG-860 are but I have a TG-4 that I bought to use as an underwater camera. The quality of the underwater pictures is OK. However, I made the mistake of taking it with me one day in place of my Sony A6000 because it did not feel like carrying the 6000. Major mistake as the TG-4 out-of-water pictures were unacceptably awful. I would have been better off using my cell phone.

    DON

Wow, that's gotta be a huge disappointment. I was pleasantly surprised at the image quality both in and out of the water. I used to carry my D7000 on cruises but I got tired of lugging it around so now I bring my Nikon P7800 and my TG-860. In some situations the Olympus surpasses the Nikon, although the Nikon can shoot RAW, which can come in handy when editing and the Olympus can't.

  11. Cruising the Inside Passage in a few weeks. For shore excursions, wildlife, and scenery, my primary camera is a Sony Alpha SLT A-65, with a Sigma 18-250 Macro Zoom Lens. For the days I don't have a shore excursion planned, I'm considering taking my Sony Alpha A3000 as a "walkaround" camera in town. I have extra batteries for both cameras as well as plenty of SDHC cards. The extra weight and space of the A 3000 is not a consideration. Any thoughts?

A couple years ago I bought an Olympus TG-860 underwater camera. It produces great images both in and out of the water. Since its pocketable, I find myself using that as my new walk-around camera on the ship as well as at beach port stops instead of my DSLR.

  12. I have it's predecessor, the TG 860 and I love it! The only down side that I see is battery life. I bought a couple high capacity batteries and that helped. Otherwise it's a great camera. It takes beautiful pictures, both underwater and on land. I would expect that the TG 870 would do just as well, if not better.
