  1. I think the explanation of Blayne is: He is trying to be the new Christian. He thinks haute couture means "weird." And like Christian, he's trying to get himself associated with a certain word, "girlicious." One thing is certain: He's not FIERCE.

  2.

Of course I know there's a ton of editing that's done but I felt really manipulated after watching this episode. I don't like it and says to me that the show is going to take a big downturn. They don't need to play these games with the viewers to keep things interesting. What a shame they think so little of us.

Agreed, although this is nothing new for Project Runway. How else did Wendy make it to the Season 1 finale, or Santino in Season 2? In both cases, they provided a story-line and controversy, which Bravo obviously believes produces better ratings.

Compare Bravo's talent/elimination shows with So You Think You Can Dance. SYTYCD focuses almost exclusively on dance. There is very little profiling, and zero living-situation-friction. We do see rehearsals, but it's about rehearsing, not about interpersonal drama. At least in the early rounds, the judging really is based on what the dancers produce onstage, rather than producers' decisions. I don't like that the later rounds are decided by the TV audience, which tends to reward personality, tricks, and sex appeal. But for the most part, SYTYCD doesn't allow mediocre talent to get to the final rounds.

  3. ...garbage bag girl should have gone home first, before the shower curtain guy...but--assuming the judges only see the final product--I don't think it was apparent that he put in more effort and design work than she did...

The judges are briefed before the runway show, if not about the designs, at least about the behind-the-scenes drama. And note this disclaimer that runs at the end of the show (really small and fast): ''The judges considered both their scores and input from the producers and Bravo in reaching their elimination decisions.'' In other words, garbage-bag lady makes for better TV than shower-curtain guy, so she stayed and he went. Bravo's other so-called reality shows, Top Chef and Step It Up and Dance, are run the same way.

  4. I like non-fiction too. "Into Thin Air", "Seabiscuit", "The Great Influenza", "Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded", and "The Demon Under the Microscope" were all can't-put-it-down's for me.

When it comes to onboard fiction, I prefer it on the frothy side. Any of the Jeeves books (P.G.Wodehouse) would make wonderful cruise reading, as would Jane Austen's lightest book "Emma" (well, for us women anyway -- I never met a man who liked Austen).

  5. This is almost embarassing compared to some of yours, but it reminds me of my cruise every single day.

On our first cruise, I got an official lanyard for my S&S card (I know.... tacky!). When I got home, I hung it on the little nail behind my kitchen calendar, with the card still in it. And there they sit, more than two years later.

  6. with such a large group you can also make the people part of the scavenger hunt.

    For example:

find someone from miami, or even another country.

What is uncle bills kids name and how old are they?

find a group member born in another country

find a group member who speaks two languages?

    hope that helps!

Perhaps... it depends on the "purpose" of the hunt. This would definitely be the way to go if Funseeker's goal is for the group to get to know each other better.

On the other hand, if they already know each other well, maybe it would be more fun to make group members "off limits." That way they'll have to explore the ship more and meet a few new friends. (And they won't huddle and "trade" items; scavenger hunters can be pretty sneaky :p )

    One more idea:

    *A book of matches

  7. I would say they could bring back something of a chair hogs, but that would just be too mean:p

    LOL!

Does anyone know if the spa/salon has little sample-size products? Would they have enough for 70 scavengers?

    Another idea:

*Something written in a language other than English (printed material, not someone writing something down for the scavenger)

Funseeker: Have you decided on the day & time of the scavenger hunt? I just wondered if scavenging the dining room is a possibility, but that would probably only work at a time it's open for breakfast or lunch.

  8. Banana- I'm bananas for crusising

Carnival pen-to keep you in line

Does any of this work? I love doing scavenger hunts!!!

    Join the fun! :D

    Here's a couple more:

*A cone from the self-serve ice cream station

*A packet of sugar or sugar-substitute

Also, I'm working on an idea for a crew autograph. A couple of possibilities:

*Brochure or business card from the spa, autographed by an employee NOT from the US.

*Autograph from a crew member who speaks (choose a language). They must also write a short phrase in their native language.

I'm wracking my brain for something they could get from the pool area, but everything there seems to be nailed down. We'll come up with something though!

  9. No, I'm in California. My name means "Kenny Chesney Fan."

I'm glad you said Yes to other passengers. Just remind your group to be super-polite and to find people who look fun-loving.

From other passengers, they might get:

*A piece of gum (hopefully unchewed  )

*Something that has the name of the other passenger's home state (gotta make it a little tough, after all!)

*Something red (I always like these items that are a little non-specific; usually something hilarious turns up)

    From the ship:

    *A toothpick

*A pen with the cruisline or ship logo (they can't use the one they found in their cabin)

    I'll be back!

  10. OK. I have now made this my personal project! :D

If you don't mind staying tuned, I'll just post ideas as they come to me. I tend to do my best thinking while driving or in the shower. Probably something I'd think of will remind you of something else, and vice versa.

I'm trying to think of little things you could pick up in various areas of the ship, so here are a few to get us started:

    Paper clip (Guest Relations Desk)

Band-aid (Infirmary -- although they might charge for it :( )

Coffee cup lid (Cafe or Buffet)

Drink umbrella (Any bar, of course -- maybe you can specify a color)

I'll check back later. I wish I'd thought of this when I was travelling with a big group a few weeks ago!

PS -- How do you feel about scavenging items from other cruisers (not in your group)? This would open up alot of possibilities, and would get them into the swing of meeting their fellow passengers.

  11. Beautiful thin slices of rare roast beef from the Gala Buffet. They weren't really BAD, just completely tasteless.

I've since decided that I'm never going to eat anything from the Gala Buffet again, but not because of the taste. I got to thinking, maybe eating something that 3000 people have just strolled by aint such a great idea!

  12. From reading other threads, people are now receiving passports that they applied for 16 weeks ago. One woman finally got some action by contacting her US Congressman/woman.

jmla01 -- just the picture page and the page above it which has your signature.

Let's face it, cruisers, we're all going to need a passport sooner or later. There is no downside to having one; it's the best ID in the world. If you apply now, you'll probably have it by Christmas, and then you can move on to more interesting cruise issues. ;)
