  1. Has anyone used uberxl to transport a mobility scooter, 3 adults with 4 bags, and a couple of backpacks? It seems that uberwav is not available in the FLL/Miami area

We have not, but wondering the same thing for our upcoming cruise in Oct, as we go from FLL to POM and would like to try a UberXl for the first time. We have never done a taxi or uber before as we are from very small town and usually drive to port.

  2. Hello All, I love these boards, but am having trouble finding much on the Triumph ship or port of Yucantan (Progreso). So I am looking for help.

So my question is while in Progreso area wondering if when you get off the ship and onto the buses into town are they handicap accessible? Wondering if they are big tour buses or smaller buses? Husband uses a scooter, but if better we could bring a wheelchair to make easier. Anyone been there or have any help for us?

We just want to go into town and maybe walk around a little bit, but just not sure how easy this would be for my husband to do. Can't seem to find my information on this port area at all clear.png?emoji-frown-1741

  3. Hello - I have a question about Progreso area. Wondering if when you get off the ship and onto the buses into town are they handicap accessible? 4. We just snagged a GS handicap for a wonderful price. My husband & dad both use scooters, so we are supper excited. Just hoping it is not a waste of money as there seems to be alot of negative on this ship. We have never been to New Orleans so we are going to do a couple of days there also. We will make the best of it no matter what.

  5. What people should or should not do is immaterial. As long as the rules or laws are followed one can do as they please. There is no rule that HC cabins are only for HC people and therefore there is no requirement that the occupants of an HC cabin actually be HC. As I stated, my friends have been called and asked to move for HC folks who need the cabin and they have nicely complied every time. But, that has happened in only about 25% of their cruises. When you try to reserve a cabin, did you ask them to check to see if an upcoming occupant would move? Maybe Carnival's system already identifies who is HC and who isn't and when they tell you that none are available that means all HC cabins are filled with HC people.

On the carnival website it states the following: Accessible staterooms are reserved for guests that have a mobility disability or disability that requires the use of the accessible features that are provided in the stateroom. We require our guest to acknowledge the need for the accessible stateroom by completing a Special Requirements Form. This form will be sent to you once the reservation has been secured and you have notified Carnival Cruise Lines that you or the person you are securing the stateroom for, requires the stateroom.

To each their own - but what your friends do is rule breaking. That is on them and you for knowing. As for asking to see if someone could be moved. YES every cruise that I have tried to book and have NOT been able to. I am not saying that other handicap people were not already booked in these rooms, as I have no idea. All I know is that carnival says non available. If they are in need then goof for them and that s fine with me. But it is when someone who is not handicap and just reserves for more space. That is just down right sad and mean. I just say I hope you are never in a need to require a handicap room for a reason such as ours.

  6. I agree that it should not up to customers whether of not they book a handicap cabin . (Their conscience should stop them but that's another issue) It must be the responsibility of the cruise line to discover if those requesting this cabin type are medically deserving . They can't be expected to do a full investigation for each booking but they should at least attempt to determine who is eligible .

Finally , unsold HC's should be thrown open to anyone 6 to 12 weeks prior to sailing .

I agree, people should not book them, but they do :( I believe that carnival does release unsold rooms about that time. Which is a reason you have to book so far in advance and can usually never get a close sale date or deal.

FWIW, carnival can't require proof of a disability ever anyway. If someone has gotten a letter asking them to provide proof of a handicap, I would say...well I would say it didn't happen quite frankly. They could certainly ask you what services you will need. But they can't ask you what your disability is and/or to prove it.

I guess I only speak for our family, but we have always been ask to fill out the required paperwork stating our need for the handicap / modified room. And when we don't send back they call asking about it. Guess I am just a rule follower. One of the same reasons that I DO NOT use my husbands handicap plate / placard when at a store or elsewhere, even through the van that I drive daily and is in both our names has it on.

  7. I have friends that are booked in an HC room not because they are handicapped but because they wanted to be near us (we are in a 4J non-HC and they are next door in a 4J HC). We booked this with my PVP a year ago and while she did state that my friends may be moved (standard warning), they were never sent any forms and they haven't been called in the year that we have had the reservations. Carnival still shows them in their cabin (checking on the Carnival website) and we cruise in a little over 3 weeks. Maybe the form cuts down on the number of people that Carnival calls if someone is requesting an HC cabin on a ship that is sold out of HC cabins but non-HC people can definitely get an HC cabin. Carnival is not going to let the cabins sit empty.

I also know non-HC people that automatically book an HC cabin every time they sail because they like the larger cabin size. Not saying it's right or wrong, it's just what they do. Usually they get to keep their cabin but they have been moved a few times as well.

This is just one of the reasons that true HC users cant reserve these rooms  We have always had to fill out paperwork showing proof & if we dont send back they have called requesting it. We are not able to book years in advance and even when we do I try, and try, and try again to get HC cabins we never can. I am always told NONE available. Just one of the things that if you no you are not handicap and don't require this room, you should not reserve it.

I totally agree scooters should NOT be left in halls, public space, ect. Yes some people should not have permission to use them. As we noticed ourselves, you seem to be able to pick out the people who use on a daily basis and who don't. Is there rude people on scooters = YES; but there are also many more rude people not on scooters. To still say to "OUTLAW" them is not right in anyway. All people need to be considerate of others. Give space to scooter users as many will also give space to able body walkers.

  8. Yes, I wish I could walk the full length of a cruise ship without my scooter, but unfortunately 10 years after being diagnosed with MS, that task is almost impossible. By the way, I'm quite capable of operating my scooter. I don't bang into people, I don't demand entry to an elevator when others are waiting, I don't park my scooter in the middle of the Lido deck, and I've never left my scooter outside of my cabin. Unlike you, I have mobility issues as a result of MS. In addition, I am able to enter and exit my standard balcony cabin with my scooter, and don't yet require the need for a handicapped stateroom.

You claim that you HATE scooters and those who need to use them. Well, I just consider the source when people like you make such rude, ignorant remarks. I'm so happy that you are in a minority.

Have a fabulous day SWEET DUTCH GIRL.

We can't agree with you more :) Happy Cruising and enjoy all your vacations to the fullest.

  9. Although I have seen scooters in the hallway, if I needed one, I would book a handicapped cabin on the off chance that the rule would be enforced. What do you plan to do if you don't pay the extra to move to a handicapped cabin and the rule is enforced?

I wouldn't want to take a chance, but that's just me.

Well for us, who was not able to book a handicap room, we rented scooters that folded down and we could place inside our cabin at night. You do what you have to so a loved one can enjoy something they want to do. We had 2 of them and placed each in the shower at night for storage. Unless you can book a room years in advance, good luck getting a handicap room :(

And they say kids are a nuisance on a cruise. I HATE the scooters (or more precisely the riders) who don't manipulate them well, leave them everywhere, run into my shins countless times, block hallways and doorways, park them in the middle of the aisles on the Lido deck while they move to a booth or chair, park caty-whompus in the elevator so it eliminates any space for anyone else. Besides scooters can't be taken on tenders and most ports aren't designed to handle them.

For those in our party who have a difficult time walking we rent a nice compact fold up wheelchair that can easily be stored in out of the way places when not in use and fits easily into all cabins.

Personally I think scooters should be out-lawed.

I personally HATE people like you, I was in tears reading your comment and feeling the sadness you have. I know some people can be ride / leave scooters like you describe, but for my husband who requires a scooter to enjoy something he loves (Cruising) it is the only way he can get around the ship or port. He never blocks a public space from someone. Usually it is the opposite and he is moves over for walking people to get by. Cant seem to get poeple to allow him in an elevator, so we usually have to pass about 10 up, until he can get on. Even in MDR he has waiter remove from our table while dinning and bring back when ready to leave. We make sure to only do things that he can enjoy on his own. It is not much fun for him to be pushed around all day. His scooter gives him freedom that you as a walking person can enjoy. Sorry you feel so bad for the handicap that cant walk. He was only 33 when he got MS - NOT something I HOPE you ever have to deal with. Just breaks my heart to see posts that put people down for things that they have no control over. Trying to enjoy a vacation with his young son is special to him. He cant enjoy a ride at a Theme Park, a fair, a beach, a water park, should I go on. How would you explain that he can't cruise either if they didn't allow scooters?

We know the rules of leaving scooters in the hallway. We don't and would not. It is very hard for him to get down halls with room service trays as well. Maybe they should outlaw those? SO please don't put everyone who rides a scooter in the same category. Maybe you should think about others and give space as it is not always their choice to be in a scooter. My husband at age of 47 would LOVE TO WALK more than 5 feet with out a mobility assisted device. Sorry to ramble, but this really touched the heart today.

  10. Hello ladies,

In seven days we will be leaving for Miami, then on the 4th we will be embarking the Insignia for our six months world cruise. You can follow my travel on my Facebook or Instagram Porthopper.

Happy New Year to you as well Marie,

I would love to follow alone on your new world cruise, but I was wondering what your facebook name was? If you wish you could email me at carol dot jankowski at michigansugar dot com. I would love to add you to my find list.

Enjoy your trip and have a wonderful time.

    Carol

  11. My husband has used a scooter for many years on a cruise. I have found lots of information on this board under: Special Interest Cruising, then disabled cruise travel.

With the information you listed, your parents would be able to get a handicap / modified room, but remember they are very hard to reserve if not way out in advance. Only a few on each ship. MUST BOOK early usually.

If you parents need scooter for travel you may find a local shop to rent from that would be less, but then you have to transport. There are lots of scooters, but you need to know what is best for them and if they need reg / portable scooters.
