Hello everyone. After reading through the conversations on this site, I've decided to try out a river cruise on either Vantage or GCT. I'm thinking of taking the Amsterdam tulip river cruise in late March/early April 2015.
After some research, I now understand why the two are mentioned as 'siblings' - it looks like each cruise line is owned individually by brothers.
I have a couple of questions:
1) The prices look similar, so which line would you choose and why?
2) I can use cxxxxxfxxx dot net to see what a fair price is for the major cruise lines, but nothing exists for these 2 cruise lines. Not including last minute booking, does the price vary much (much is a $400-500 difference in pricing)?
3) I've read that on rivers, when 'parked' your room is very snug to the other boats that are docked so it doesn't make a lot of sense to pay the extra money for a balcony. So what type of room would you suggest?
Thanks so very much in advance!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I love the analysis work you did. :D

I'm an experienced ocean cruiser, but I'm just now looking into river boat cruises... and I have to say, this has been a really, really good thread for information. :)

Hi everyone. I'm just off the Spirit and we had to skip Istanbul because of protests on May 1st. Here is the thing, the next port we had was another port in Turkey and the guide and driver said that Istanbul has a history of protests on May 1st for the last few years. So the cruise lines should have known that it was a strong possibility that the protests would happen again this year.
So... why didn't NCL anticipate this annual event and flip the ports of call for Turkey? I realize that it would be inconvienent for NCL, but all over the ship were signs stating that the ports are what cruising is all about.
Missing Istanbul was a big deal for me. :confused:

This is a good deal for Florida residents, but the airfare kills the deal for West Coast dwellers. I wish they would have more West Coast cruises. If a cruise line would have a cruise that stayed 2 or 3 nights in both San Francisco and San Diego, that would be awesome for me.
Oh well. Janet

I'm downgrading to a balcony. That is, if I can ever get my TA to respond. I checked again, and I made the request on Monday (not Tuesday as I originally posted).

It would cost me a $100 to cancel :(
The cruise I am on is April 24th, Spirit, out of Barcelona, 12 days, category SG, room 9212. I know that it is a fantastic room, and we really want it since it is our 25th wedding anniversary, but the $3000 difference between SG and B1 can buy a lot of meals in Cagney's.
Someone is going to be VERY happy that I'm changing rooms because this is the aft PH room.
I called NCL and they said the agency that I'm working with is a really good one and that I should call and speak with a manager because what is happening to me isn't normal. But since I've booked over a year ago, this is completely normal to me.

Hello everyone. I am wondering if booking with NCL directly will increase my likely hood of getting a call from the upgrade fairy?
And yes, I understand that if an upgrade were to be offered that my TA is supposed to call me, but service has been very poor. I have sent emails that have gone unanswered, e.g., do I need a visa.
Final payment is due in 2 weeks, so I believe I can cancel without penalty and make a new reservation on NCL. Hence my question, will booking with NCL directly increase my likelihood of getting a call from the upgrade fairy?
Thanks, Janet

Great questions. I would like to know the answer as well.

@Peg013
Please refocus your energy towards something meaningful rather than sucking the fun out of reading these posts. It seems as if you are personally insulted. So what if he has never sailed NCL before! I found his experience and advice fascinating. Janet

@insidecabin,
What do you mean by 'regional pricing'? Is that something like getting a $50 discount sometimes based on the state that you live in?
