I would take a look at what time the ship is due to dock.  If the ship docks at 0700, chances of getting off by 0730 are very slim.   There are lot of factors that come into play - where you are docking, what ports you are coming from, how efficient the port authorities are at the port.

    Thanks!

We walked into town a couple of weeks ago and felt perfectly safe. There were police, security guards, and tourist aids all along the route to offer directions to the various tourist sights and to stop traffic when necessary to help us across the street. Most of the younger helpers spoke English.

Did you use a tour company in town? We have one booked with puerta plata shore excursions.com and I wondered if anyone else has heard of them?

I've been searching too.  We will be visiting Nov 1, docked at Taino cruise port.  I've found only vague information about a beach day, hardly no info about transportation, beach bars, menus,  pricing.  I finally got in contact with Jack's Kite and Grill that replied the beach is free and the are food and drinks that can be bought.  I asked for a menu and got a food menu. Asked for a bar/drinks menu and received a reply that they had an assortment of drinks with an estimated price of 200-500 RD (Dominican Pesos).  They accept USD, RD and credit cards.   No info in taxi transportation costs though.

It's so odd that there is so little information online about outside of Taino Cruise Port or beach things to do outside of port. (Several YouTube videos of the actual port grounds.)   If anyone finds anything, please post.

We will be there in February.  We just booked with Dominican shore excursions to go into town and then to Blue Jack Tar Beach. I am hoping it is a fun time!

Our ship stopped in Colon for a day last week. My husband had to venture out into the city to find crutches for me. If he hadn't needed to go out, he would have turned around and gone right back to the ship. He's very fit and does martial arts but was very worried while walking through the city trying to find a pharmacy or medical supply store. The city of Colon is very poor and depressed. He was lucky and eventually found a really good cab driver who took care of him. If you get to Colon before your ship does, you should probably just enter the secure area of the terminal and hang out until your ship gets there.

Do you think it is safe if you are on a ship excursion and not on your own?

Hi lowbudgetmama, it might be an idea to give folks a bit more info. Is the cruise a full transit from ocean to ocean or is it partial transit into Lake Gatun and back out the same side? Also it might be a good idea to list the ports you visit.

For what it’s worth I have done two full transit both from Pacific to Atlantic. From my recollections the ships tendered at Cabo San Lucas and San Juan Del Sur.  They docked at Puntarenas and Cartagena. We’re due to do it again in 22 and in addition to the above ports we also visit Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Puerto Quetzal and Fuerta Amador and all of those are marked as ports where we dock.  Our cruise doesn’t go to Colon or any Caribbean islands.

Hopefully you’ll get some folks with stronger knowledge come on here to correct any errors or add other useful info. Have a great cruise.

Hello, Our cruise is a partial transit I think into Lake Gatun any recommendations for excursions? We have never been in this area before

Yes, please do!  If you ask at APDMOM@live.com, I will gladly send an original without the signature at the bottom too.

And we are booked for the Michael Jackson show tonight. I think we will be there when the doors open 🙂

Do you have to reserve each of the shows? If you do how do you make your reservation? Thanks for all the tips and great  information!!

  7. SERVICE: 99% was with a smile. Even Maurice from the Black Crab ;) At first I thought Andre (cruise director) was a bit of a ya know but actually he really grew on me and I appreciate his difficult job and found him very funny. I made personal connections with servers/bartenders in the wine bar, pool bar, and the divina bar. Every time they say me...they addressed me by my name and said what a pleasure it was to see me. I really felt a sense of family between these connections and the connection I made with my table mates whom I miss very much.

I had those annoying coupon booklets for soda/wine and I never had an issue being served. When I ran out they had pity on me : ) I have never had such an experience on a cruise ship. Genuine people.

How did you purchase your coupon booklets. We sail in January and I am having no luck purchasing them
