My first cruise was back in the mid eighties on Dolphin Cruise Line, on the Dolphin IV. What ever happened to this cruise line and ship, does anyone know? If I remember, weren't they bought out by someone? Thanks for any help you may give!

You can look it up. They went into bankruptcy not long after we sailed on either the Sea Breeze or Ocean Breeze. They just went into the next port and said everyone had to get off. Then they took it out into the ocean and sank it. The kid workers called it the Big Dread Boat instead of Big Red Boat. Food was great, staff great, entertainment so so. Then we started doing cruises with Royal and that was FAB! Sue Kalis

Mine was on the Big Red Boat (anyone remember who owned that line? was it Premier?). The itinerary was Bahamas, and the date - this is where it gets sketchy for me 😉 I believe was around May of 1994

Loved that cruise - I've been hopelessly addicted since then! 😄

We went on this one in winter of 89. The kid workers called it the Big Dread Boat. The rooms were tiny especially for 4 people. We went on Royal after that and then we loved it! The line went into bankruptcy and all the people had to get off at the next port. Then they took the boat out and sank it.

The worst party scene I ever saw on a ship was a giant quinceañera celebration from hundreds of girls from South America.  It was horrible, but mostly because of the screaming and chatter from hundreds of poorly behaved 15-year old girls.  They were everywhere and they were obnoxious.  They also were dressed really inappropriately for children, which 15-year olds definitely still are.  BUT mostly the screaming and woo-hoo'ing.

That's a party I hope I never cruise with again.  I've never seen the stuff you co-worker talked about.  I've seen some stuff at The Quest that might make you consider investing in eye bleach, but not general stuff like you mentioned.

Hope it doesn't ever apply to you, but.....the Medical Centre on RCI's ships are excellent. X-rays, various 'tests' and an ICU...which I was in.

The Medical Centre is usually found on deck 1. Doctor and staff are brilliant.

Thank goodness for travel insurance 🙂

That is correct! I got norovirus onboard Harmony. I went to the onboard medical center and they were fabulous. I had a combo Norovirus and acid reflux right after drinking a Johnny Rockets shake. Really sick. They gave me all meds, did EKG because I had chest pressure, IV to rehydrate due to vomiting, free food that was bland that I could order, and they were fabulous. A year prior my friend was quite ill onboard and she did not go to the Med center. Costly pills from the little store onboard, miserable for 3 days, no option on food. Not a good move.

Wow, thank you all for the quick replies!  I'm feeling much better, thank you!  Don't get me wrong, I know they'll see stuff and I can't keep them in a bubble nor do I want to, but not sure I want to have the birds and the bees talk on my vacation!  😄

Someone mentioned the "compass", I am assuming that is the agenda of activities correct?  Good to know they label those activities, we'll just be sure to avoid those.  Or put the kids in the kids club and go ourselves....  J/K.

Can't wait for the vacation to start!

I was on NCL Escape a year ago and am going on Anthem in March. We had to choose between repeating on the Escape vs Anthem.

They were similar price to us, and both a long drive for us (coming from Ohio). Anyway I debated a lot but what made me decide on Anthem was the indoor amenities during a colder season with little kids (ages 3 and 6). We were on the Escape just as a couple.

I think in your situation I would be inclined to sail on the Escape because of the port proximity, drink packages, and specialty dining promos they tend to offer. With little kids, we can't drink much alcohol, so the perk isn't very valuable. I remember being on the Escape and thinking how much fun it would be with older kids. We loooved going to the Howl at the Moon in particular, but it is not for little kids.

I will do a comparison when I return but that will be too late for you. There are a lot of comparison posts out there though. Good luck.

The first cruise I ever took I read the cruise contract and my first thought was.... why the hell would anyone ever agree to this? Then I figured I just have to deal with it if I want to try cruising.

I do realize that is a bit different situation than the subject at hand. Personally, I'm not sure I would ever book on board, and make such a commitment, when there are other things I rather be doing on the ship. I would be distracted. But I tend to be someone that needs to take time to think things out for a while before I commit substantial amounts of money to anything.

  8. I was just at a Blue Cross Blue Shield Medicare Advantage insurance for retired teachers. If you are in a foreign country you find the closest medical facility with 1 doctor and nurses full time. Insurance will pay for medical care out of country. If no facility exists close by as to their definition, they will medivac you to the nearest country that meets their requirement. You call them and they will help you. So with good insurance, you would be covered.

The thing that you have to watch out for is you must buy any other trip insurance if that is what you want within about 10 days to 2 weeks of your first payment for your trip or they won't cover you. That is the situation I am in. I am more worried about missing a boat or connection which would be covered with trip insurance. Still looking. Some you can pay more for a waiver I guess.

Pretty much a waste of money in my opinion. Wherever you are, whether or a cruise ship or staying at a hotel, you can ask the concierge or front desk to recommend or help you locate a doctor or hospital. Much more important is medical insurance or vacation protection insurance with medical coverage that includes MEDICAL EVACUATION to get you back home for treatment. This may require a nurse and air transport by wheelchair or even stretcher, and can cost $25-50,000. It is a serious matter and cost. I would suggest spending your money on that coverage. Even though you may have medical coverage (which hopefully includes non-US treatment, you still need med evac coverage. If you get ill, the one thing you will desperately want is to get home to your family and usual doctors ASAP.

  9. Hi,

My husband and I are 42, looking at cruising with my mom & husband who are 59 and live in another city (no kids). Hubby and I have done two fabulous cruises on Celebrity, and are looking at their holiday cruises in the Caribbean Dec 2014. We notice that a 7 night veranda room is $900 pp if we depart Dec 13, but is $1600 if we depart Dec 20 or 21. In your opinion, do the cruise ship do enough to make it feel "Christmas-y" that it's worth it to just go for it and go over Christmas? I know the whole idea is that the cruise is how you celebrate the holiday and they do all the cooking and cleaning- but maybe it's worth it to save the money and have a mellow Christmas alone when we return. Thoughts?

Celebrity is owned by Royal Caribbean. We went on RC this year on Dec. 8-16. They had sold out the ship to 2000 over 70 year olds that were crotchity and nasty and oblivious to anyone else's needs or wants. It was miserable. That is why the price was so low. They notified any senior groups and even transported them to the ship and back. It was not fun. Never saw so many walkers and scooters. They even packed the dining room so tight with cover table toppers that the waiters could barely get through. We saw them remove them on the last night. They must have packed those rooms to the gills. Apparently, because people are getting ready for Christmas, it is a slow time and this is their way to fill it up. Our room was very cheap, but definitely NOT worth it. They have some Christmas deco on RC, but not enough to warrant experiencing rude whiny people. Believe me, I am in my 60's and so was my friend, but we are human and they were not! I would call Celebrity and ask a lot of questions.

  10. Jan. 8,2013-Jan. 16, 2013 Independence of the Seas, RC

It's gone folks! Totally new menu the week we were onboard. (We only do dinner in the dining room, so can't say for other meals.) Our friends were on the prior week and food was same as previously--wonderful. All of us have cruised a lot! Our week, not good. Cheaper menu, lesser food, poorer quality. Hard to find items you truly could enjoy whether it be taste, meat type, accompanied veggies, dessert. A new area manager in DR came on our week and said everyone is complaining. It is all about cheaper costs. I asked if they are trying to get you to spend more and go to the specialty restaurants? Answer was no--just to save money. We used to LOVE the food. Not any more. Royal Caribbean wrote back to me and said that all ships have the new menu. Heads up folks! They were compiling criticism of anything to uppers, but basically the attitude was: this is it folks.

  11. First I thought Equinox is first choice. But then I started to think if anything else is disappointment after Oasis?? We are very active people so I'm wondering if there is not enough activities for us?? If we would make decision based on ports, we would definitely choose E.

We loved Oasis and Allure! Just came back from 8 day Independence. Sadly, they have changed the dining room dinner menu to a cheaper, inferior quality on all RC ships. We were the first week guinea pigs. It wasn't a good experience at all. Overcooked food, lesser quality and quantity, poor choices to pick from. Ugh! I started looking at the menus ahead of time the last few days to help decide choices. It wasn't easy. Everything is different and we used to love the food on RC. Aside from that, Oasis and Allure are the very best in all ways! Our absolute favorite in our group and we have been on 18 cruises each--husband and wife (being me.)

  12. We booked Independence of the Seas and paid in full just before the Dec. 7 sail date. It was cheap for an 8 night, but not worth it. It actually went down $100 to $329 inside after we booked. They sent senior groups all over special deals with transport and there were 2,000 crotchity, rude, mean, snarly, decrepit seniors, many with walkers or scooters. It was like, "What the heck is this?" Also, they rolled out a new menu with cheapened selections and bad food. Talked to area manager in our dining room and he was explaining that they just want to cut costs and everyone is complaining! No kidding. Worst cruise ever. When you have trouble finding one item you really want, the menu is bad. Chef's vegetables were rutabaga, carrots, and celery cut up and nasty (nightly) and we always switched out. Overdone steak, chicken, and salmon. Bad. Big lobster 2nd to last night, but little flavor. Entertainment not as good as Oasis and Allure. Doing a "Carnival" where ship singers and dancers are the entertainment 3 nights. 17th cruise and rates at the bottom especially when you are aware of what it could be.

  13. Just returned from Oct 20th sailing of Carnival Valor and on St Maarten/St Martin we did Bernard's tour with "The mailman" as our guide. We had a great tour and great time. We met at 9 am (ship time and local time) at meeting point which is easy to locate. Enjoyed the entire tour and spent plenty of time at Maho to see several planes land and take off. Highly recommend this tour. Price is good $35 pp and included drinks (Beer, Water, Rum punch with mostly Rum!!) :):)

We took it a few years ago and it was great!

  14. You can ask for a refund on it. RC gave us refunds on a shore excursion to the resort in the Bahamas. They traipsed everyone in a large group to the opposite end of the island regardless of what you paid (when we paid the most) and then said, ok you people (us) can go anywhere now. We had a handicapped person with us that was not allowed to bring scooter and couldn't even walk any more. They kindly gave the money back since she had to sit an hour before she could walk at all. Their customer service is very good in that respect so just contact them now and it should be taken care of. We just did it at the service desk after the shore excursion and they refunded all 6 of us.

Can't remember everything of course but NY striploin was very nice. The thing of it is, it was listed as available when we booked it along with the free bottled water so we booked it at $250 and were ok with it. To find out later that they yanked the free lunch and water? To me its the principle of the thing. It would be no different than buying a car and agreeing on free mats and then find out when you pick it up that they decided you weren't going to get the free mats. Is it something expensive or would make a big difference in my enjoyment of the car? Absolutely not but we agreed on certain amenities and I paid the price knowing I would get them. Once they yanked them, it feels like a bait and switch to me. Sometimes principle can't be measured in $.
