  1. I posted this on the Ocean Medallion Question Thread but had no response so I'll try again here:
I'm Ocean Ready but a Canadian resident so need to pick up my OM at the port in Vancouver. Can anyone who's been in that situation explain what embarkation will be like? Will being Ocean Ready make any difference if I don't already have the medallion?

    Hi,

Anybody aware of Royal P experiencing ''issues'' ?? She has skipped Juneau already today and appears to be heading to''Cape Spencer''

according to Marine Traffic....which means she will also skip Skagway and Glacier Bay.....Once at Cape Spencer ( SEAPA pilots drop

off point ) , would she be heading straight to Whittier ?  or heading South back to Vancouver early ?  Intriguing....Recently, she did shortcut

her Ketchikan southbound call by 1 1/4 hours...and had a Vancouver arrival almost 1 hour early.....and a departure back north about 45 minutes

    earlier than prior weeks...

    claude

From other comments on this board I believe the early arrival in and departures from Vancouver are due to the tide levels and Royal's need to slip in under the Lion's Gate Bridge at low tide.

#7 How do I redeem it?

Just tell your agent your certificate number that you would like applied to your new cruise, and they will take care of the rest. If you want to transfer it to someone else, you must call NCLCruiseNext (1.866.234.7350).

Forgive me if this question has been answered above and I missed it: Does this mean you have to call NCL to book using a CruiseNext certificate and it can't be used by booking online on the NCL site?

Expecting a refund for a deviation that advance warning was provided for does conjure up the infamous quote "...but other than that, how did you like the play Mrs. Lincoln?"

Thanks for that, fishywood. I read these boards primarily for information but every so often am rewarded with entertainment value as well. 😁

Horizon Court/Bistro:  my opinion:  big and chaotic at prime meal times.  Lots of food available, but the layout was confusing for this first time Royal Princess cruiser.  If I sail on this Class of ships again, I will be better prepared to "deal" with this dining venue more successfully than I did.

I'll be on Royal in September ... first time on Princess ... and am wondering about the "confusing layout" of the buffet. What makes it confusing and do people have any helpful hints on successfully manoeuvring through this area?

The Pub Lunch is always listed in the Patter and the location will be given. FYI — The line forms early and often gets long.

Thanks to all who responded. I confess, now that I know what it is ... bangers and mash, meat pie, etc. ... I don't think it's really my thing but many others clearly enjoy it if the line starts early and gets long. We're lucky the cruise lines have something for every taste. 😊

    Hi,

Will be offered on a sea day, maybe two times depending on length of cruise.  Will be noted in the Princess Patter.  Usually starts 11:30am to I think 1:00pm.  Pretty popular, we usually go early, at 11:30am, even though we usually eat a later lunch on other days.

Thanks for the info. And in which venue(s)?

I know but we were just on the Island Princess and there was no sign outside of Sabatini's and nothing listed in the daily schedule (like the Pub Lunch), but it was open on 2 of the sea days. Only 4 or 5 tables of people each time we were there. The only way you'd know is to look at the back of the Patter where the restaurants are listed and it was listed under Sabatini's on those two sea days.  That's why I mentioned that you have to look for it because not all ships that have it advertise it.

I have seen "Pub Lunch" mentioned a few times in this forum but can find no reference to it on the Princess website. Where and when is it offered?

  9. Hi there

Hoping you can help. My family and I are flying to Hawaii in December and are staying at luana for 5 nights before cruising on the POA for 7 nights. We don't want to take all our luggage on the cruise however (read shopping!) Can anyone suggest where we can safely store our luggage?

    Many thanks

Here's another option. We have a very late flight (10 pm) following our cruise and I found out about Marina somewhere on these boards. After disembarkation she'll pick us up at the cruise port, drop us wherever we like in Waikiki for the day, store our luggage and then pick us up wherever we happen to be around 7 pm and take us and our luggage to the airport, all for $60. You can reach her at yourconnectionhawaii@gmail.com or 808-253-9920.

  10. It's all moot now as Royal just sent an email (48 hours before sailaway, no less) announcing they've cancelled the stop in Hilo due to the closure of VNP. Duh! Surely everyone's know about that for weeks and had made other arrangements. They're substituted an overnight and second day in Lahaina so I guess it's back to the drawing board!

  11. It's possibly doable, but will be very rushed (which violates the Hawaii "Hang Loose" spirit!). I'd put both Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls in the "if there's time" category and concentrate on the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, which takes about 2 hours to do. It has a waterfall which is gorgeous, though maybe not as high as the others. Make sure to take water and mosquito repellent. Then head for the Waipio Valley lookout, but make a quick stop along the way in Honokaa at Tex's Drive-in for malasadas - they're famous all over the islands. I'd also skip Laupahoehoe Point - interesting and pretty, but not much different from what you'll see elsewhere along the route. Then you can still circle back through Waimea. Keep in mind that some of the roads you'll be traveling are 2 lane, where you may get stuck behind slow-moving farm equipment, and are almost always under construction for some reason. The recent hurricane and 34" of rain on the island could have damaged some roads and be reason for more delays.

Thanks so much for your feedback. Your suggestions make a lot of sense and we certainly don't want to feel rushed. I'll modify our plans accordingly.

  12. Our ship docks in Hilo at 9:30 am and we’ll take theshuttle to the airport to pick up our rental car. Realistically it's unlikelywe'll be on the road before 11 am. The current plan is to stop first at Rainbow Falls andthen head up the Hamakua Coast Road to the Waipio’o Valley Lookout with short stopsat HawaiiTropical Botanical Garden, Akaka Falls and Laupahoehoepoint BeachPark. After Waipio’o Valley we’d drive to Waimea and then circle back to Hilo via Hwy 200.From the mileage and driving time info I’ve found online it looks doable in the6 hour timeframe but I’d appreciate hearing from people with knowledge of theroute and stops. If it seems overambitious, what modifications would yousuggest?

  13. The OP was asking about 2 people on the Skytrain, each with a suitcase. Your response to that question was

I never recommend SkyTrain to or from Amtrak, as there is no legal way to transport large suitcases on this line (bags can only go at your feet on on your lap, so bigger than a backpack is basically always going to break the law).

and that is patently ridiculous as it is NOT illegal for a person to take a suitcase on Skytrain. Obviously there could be extreme circumstances wherein a person with an excessive amount of luggage causes considerable inconvenience to other passengers and consequently may be asked to leave the train. But I think it's unkind and unfair to panic future visitors to Vancouver by telling them they'd be breaking the law with one suitcase.

  14. I've seen your response about luggage not being allowed on Skytrain a few places now and I'm wondering where the information originated? The "Etiquette on Transit" section at translink.ca (https://www.translink.ca/Rider-Guide/Etiquette-on-Transit.aspx) says:

Backpacks, luggage, grocery bags, & laptopsLarge bags can be difficult for people around you. Please remove your backpack and put it on the floor – especially when standing as it's easy to bump someone. If seating space is limited, ensure that your personal items are not taking away seats from other passengers. Does your bag really need its own seat?
