Hello, we have never been on the Joy, we are scheduled to take her to Alaska in Aug  2020.  We have been on 11 other NCL ships and have had a great time on everyone of them. We are not picky people but we do like good food & service.   We have eaten in the buffet, Cagney's, La Cucina's, and a number of other restaurants and have never had  bad meal.  Every one of the shows have been exceptional.  On a NCL ship a few years ago a magician made a helicopter disappear from the stage, we were on the six deck of the ship and we could not figure it out - it was pretty awesome.

We have done the Panama Canal trip twice, both trips were the best of the best.  I would go again in a hearty beat.  Both of the ships were around 2800 people, the Sun & the Jewel.  We had inside cabins both times, if we go again it will be in a balcony. When we were on the Jewel friends had an aft balcony & that spoiled us.  You could sit on your aft balcony & see everything at the back real close.  They had the TV on that showed you the bow & you could see what was coming up shortly.  Before you entered the canal a well spoken narrator is brought on board and talked the entire trip.  It's an all day process to get through the canal, very slow moving but very interesting, both trips were thru the old canal. On the Jewel we saw larger ships (huge ships) going thru the new canal.  The Joy will need to go thru the new canal. In the old canal we had 2 feet on each side for the ship to get thru, you could almost touch the  wall.  Bring binoculars you will hopefully see birds and animals.  Check out your library as ours had books to check out about the canal that was interesting to look through as I had no idea what to except.

Have a great time and enjoy your trip which ever way you go.

Thanks so much for the response.  We have a big decision to make thankfully we have plenty of time to research NCL further.  As you mentioned we have an aft balcony booked on the Joy for this cruise.  We love the aft balconies on the DCL Dream Class ships.  Thanks again.

  2. Afternoon.  Wondering if anyone can share their experience on NCL cruising to the Panama Canal or just an NCL cruise in general.  My wife and I are thinking about possibly trying this cruise and it would be our 1st NCL cruise.  We are in our mid to late 40's, no kids and a little apprehensive switching cruise lines.  We are long time DCL cruisers (17+ cruises so far) and love the service we receive on Disney.  We are wondering if the service and entertainment will be what we are used to, or will we be wishing we were on DCL.   Currently we have the Panama Canal booked on both and will be canceling one of them.

    Thanks

    Jon

  3. Looking for an aft facing cabin with balcony? Only one balcony category, B4, available with cabins on decks 8 through 11. I would avoid deck 8 as it is directly over Club Fusion. There are also a variety of full suites available. Again, deck 8 is over Club Fusion. If you just want a cabin near the rear of the ship then Cat. BD on deck 10 is a good choice. The balconies are 9' x 9', half covered. Deck 9 has mini suites. Most balconies on decks 11, 12 & 14 are 9' x 5' and fully covered.

If you are thinking about being on your balcony during the canal transit, think again. Having been through the canal 5 times, the best views are on the upper open decks and deck 7 where you can move around and get 360 degree views.

Thanks. We are looking for an aft facing balcony, we love them on the Disney Dream Class ships.

  4. Quick question. We are thinking of making the jump from DCL to Royal and were wondering how difficult it is to get say Dinner reservations at one of the Specialty Dinning locations? As first timers is it like Disney where we would have to wait till a booking window opens? Example: We are Platinum CC members on DCL so we can book reservations for dinning, excursions etc at the 120 day mark. Is it the same format with Royal?

  5. I was just in a sky class GS last week on allure and the free pressing was listed in the welcome letter in our suite. I had a dress pressed. I ended up being charged five bucks for it, but the concierge took it off the bill for me. So, looks like it still applies, but check your bill.

OP, I think I may have answered this question on another board (I have the same screen name). If that wasn't you, I can give you a bunch more info here later (not easy to cut and paste from the tablet I'm on now). :)

Yes that is me on the other board, thanks again for all the info you provided. As I mentioned on the other board we booked CLS 1748. We still have 7 DCL Concierge cruises booked before we make the switch but I think we will be fine. We paid less for the CLS then a Cat V on the Fantasy or our B2B on the Dream in a 1BR..

Thanks everyone for the great info.

  6. You will love the CLS, will be in my second one in October,

you can email the concierge ahead of time for special request IE

cabana at the private island , most of the shows etc can be accessed

in your cruise planner from home.

Thanks for the info. How long before the cruise can you start booking activities and dinners etc and is it the same time as the rest of the people sailing?

  7. So we are thinking of booking our first Royal cruise in a Crown Loft Suite on the Oasis. We will be booking one on the side of the ship so anyone have any recommendations? We are Platinum on DCL and usually sail in a Concierge suite on DCL so we know how all that work but no clue as to how it works on Royal. Does Royal give you pre-booking like DCL Shoreside Concierge or do you have to book all your extras on your own? Can you book things like dining, shows etc before everyone else or does it open for everyone at the same time? If it opens at the same time is it one of those things that you have to do very quickly once the window opens? I'm sure I'll have a hundred more questions. Thanks in advance.

  8. My wife and I are thinking of changing our cruising up a little bit. We have no kids and sail on DCL 3-4 times a year in a Concierge Suite (platinum members). Now that DCL is getting so expensive we are talking about trying a RCCL cruise in a Grand Suite. What we are wondering is if anyone would comment on sailing in a suite on RCCL compared to DCL and would you do it again or stick with DCL? Thanks
