can anyone please tell me if I can purchase a ferry ticket ahead of time or if this is even necessary? Silhouette is docking on Fri Sept 23, I dont think any other large cruise ship is there that day..

We're on your cruise, Aquashores, and we were also planning to take the ferry but now after reading these replies, I'm starting to think the train is a better idea.

How easy is it to travel by public transport from the cruise terminal in Livorno to Lucca? Do-able comfortably in a 7 hour port stay?

Easily doable. We took a public bus from the port to the train station. Sorry I don't remember the exact details but it wasn't complicated. The train to Pisa and connection to Lucca were fast and comfortable. It was a very enjoyable day.

If you're going for the free admission be sure to get there early. The line up gets quite long and moves slowly. We got there around 2:30 and there were already lots of people waiting. We found the gallery interesting but not great. Depends on your taste.

We had an excellent day with Kusadasi Tours. We were met at the port by a very knowledgable young woman guide and a driver in a comfortable, air-conditioned car.. She took us to Sirince village, Ephesus and a wonderful Turkish lunch after. Everything went exactly as planned and we were totally satisfied with the tour. I also liked that they didn't expect any payment in advance. We paid cash at the end of the tour. Ephesus is definately not to be missed!
