tcmagnum:  Thank you for the comment.  Here’s where that Joy springs from:

As I noted earlier, this trip was booked as a celebration for a life event for the family, but really it’s all about DD, Shannon.  I’ve posted some other “Live” threads from previous cruises.  Mostly on Oceania.  On these other cruises, I had the joy and fulfillment of having Shannon with us to “celebrate” other “milestones” in her young life. (I suspect with many of you, as it is with me, traveling with your adult children is one of life’s greatest pleasures.)

Just over ten years ago at the age of 20, Shannon was diagnosed with Stage 3C melanoma cancer.  She had been attending university at George Washington Univ. and had just returned from a six month program in Oman, Jordan studying Arabic and Farsi.  (Like many 9/11 kids of her generation, she had a strong calling to service. She has some crazy linguistics skills, which she knew she could use with various federal agencies.)

Needless to say, that diagnosis changed her life path.  Ours too.  She returned home to live with us while she pursued treatments.  Her life over the next twelve months was wrapped up in surgeries, immunotherapy, and radiation. Being 20 and strong definitely had its advantages over that period.

Roll clock forward a couple of years and Shannon is diagnosed with thyroid cancer.  This was definitely a ***** moment.  More surgery. More radiation.  More constant monitoring and scanning.  Despite all the treatments, she could never get an “all clear” report from her testing.  Roll clock forward to this past November and the thyroid cancer is detected again. This time in her lymph nodes in her neck, which is where her doctors believed it would get detected eventually.

So surgery right away and then radiation again this past February.  Here’s a photo of Shannon waiting for this most recent radiation treatment at Mayo.  No, she’s not flipping me off.  That’s her hashtag (along with a lot over people doing battle with the Big C.), which I can’t spell here:  #F@$kCancer.

Follow up testing in July, and for the first time in just over ten years her blood work comes back ALL CLEAR.  We’re all still in shock.  For ten years I’ve been traveling with Shannon. Enjoying life. Savoring every moment of these shared experiences.  Many of them cruising.  So I booked this cruise to celebrate. Every other trip was to celebrate recovering from some shitty, life sucking treatment.  Needless to say, this one is a bit more special.

We will be on the eclipse in a few weeks and I am so happy I found this thread.  Thank you for sharing your story...such fun to be on a cruise with your family  and celebrating your daughter.

I am also celiac, so I am eager to read about your dinning experiences on board. I am so looking forward to reading more about your cruising adventure. Safe travels and warm wishes to you and your family! - J

  2. I as well am gluten free and will be in AQ for our up coming cruise. I am aware of the labelling of the menus in the main dining room, but the menus I have seen online for Blu don't seem to have the gluten free indicators beside the menu items. It is very easy to use the main dining room menus as each item is clearly indicated. Does anyone have any advise for eating gluten free in Blu?

I have read recently that the buffet has a separate area for GF, anyone have a pic of this area, or can comment to the variety of options.

  3. MDR should be open to all categories concierge and higher. I was in Aqua class last week. At embarkation, we were told we could eat lunch in the MDR. When we got there, we were told that we could not dine there. Isn't Aqua class higher than concierge? If so, either allow aqua guests to dine there or open Blu for lunch. On a cruise, the most important times to impress guests is on the first and last day. Being shut out of the mDR left me with a bad vibe. It is memorable.....not the way to get a cruise started. Also, as an elite plus, a warmer welcome with a served lunch might be appreciated.

I Totally agree with your comments. We have a AQ cabin on our upcoming cruise in November. I have celiac and will not be eating in the buffets at all due to cross contamination issues. ( I got terribly sick on our last cruise from food in the buffet) I would have loved to be able to have lunch in the MDR on embarkation.

  4. Here´s a video of most of BLU´s old menus and some food.

The new menus are different, yes... but not that much different. They just gut rid of one course, but you can order as much as you like.

I would really be surprised if you would not find a difference between MDR and Blu. Food is one thing - however, BLU is just so much more relaxed and more personal.

Thank you for posting this video! Which course did they get rid of on the new mennu?

  5. BOSOXL- I too think that the food in the main dining is pretty good. I was hoping with the cost of the AC cabins going up so much lately, that celebrity would make sure their customers are getting what they paid for. Seems the only real advantage of AC is dining in Blu. If we don't experience a noticeable difference from the main dining room, then this will be a once only AC cabin for us. As others have mentioned on this site, getting the best veranda cabin and eating all dinners in the specialty restaurants may be an overall ( and cheaper) better choice. I will definitely post my thoughts on Blu on my return. ;)

  6. We are excited about our upcoming sailing on the Silhouette. I have read some mixed reviews about the quality of food in Blu lately. We have sailed several times with Celebrity and this will be our first AC cabin, and was looking forward to dinning in Blu. Would love to hear your thoughts on the on your dinning experiences in Blu. What is the best dish you have eaten in Blu? Thanks for sharing! :)

  7. It was a quick phone call.... Lovely lady on the end of the line. I wasn't aware of any conditions on the offer, I never read or investigated other than what the OP posted. Customers service rep knew my sailing date she never asked me any further questions, she just stated she would apply the promo to my booking. I was surprised to read that fellow cruisers where having issues. It does concern me that I might not receive my new OBC but I'm not going to call and ask any questions......I will update the board when i get back :)

  8. We had pre purchased our pemium liquor package for our up coming cruise dec 13 on the reflection. Thank you to the OP As i just called celebrity no need to cancel and repurchase the package the rep stated she would just apply the promo to our booking . Im a happy girl because i did not get the 123 promo and had to pay full pop for my booze and had no OBC ..... Thank you thank you thank you for your post !!

  9. I'm also sailing on the reflection in December and feel the same way. Why so many negative reviews??? Why such a dramatic change in everyones attitude? Prior to our booking all the reviews were so positive, we really felt we made the right decision choosing the reflection. Anyone cruise recently on the reflection that could share some insight.

  10. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! We will be sailing the reflection on Dec 13-20 and I am so grateful for your gluten free review. I have been concerned regarding gluten free options, as i am such a foodie! So glad to hear about the bread! I have spoken to celebrity regarding my gluten free needs and they have it noted on my booking. Will that be sufficient, or will i need to notify anyone else? Did you happen to notice if there were any gluten free beers? I feel so much better knowing you were able to enjoy your gluten free cruise, you just made my day :)

  11. I too am looking for this answer. I have called celebrity several times and have been told each time they would email me the wine list under 13$ a glass on the reflection. I want to make an informed decision, regarding upgrading to the premium beverage package. To date I have not received any such email. I followed up the phone call to make sure they have my correct email address. I was assured each time that indeed they did have my correct address and would send the info requested. It has been a week since the last phone call, no email yet...... Disappointing :(
