As per Canada govt regs all passengers boarding a cruise ship in Canada are required to submit ban ArriveCAN declaration.

On the Canadian government website it says  if you are leaving Canada snd not returning don’t have to complete an Arrive Can. We are flying in a day early so we will complete an Arrive Can for that and use the hotel as our address on the Arrive Can and per their website since we are going from Vancouver and disembarking in Seward (not returning to Canada) it says we do not need another one as I understand it.

All travellers are required to take a pre-embarkation COVID-19 testbefore embarking on a cruise in Canada, even if the cruise ship is not leaving Canadian waters

Travellers who are staying within Canada throughout their entire journey or who are leaving Canada and not returning don’t have to complete ArriveCAN.

Help with a little background here - if you are a US resident, and you are traveling to Canada, is the ArriveCAN required as of today (August 8 ) before entry?  Is this for any form of entry?  We live close enough to Canada that we could drive up to catch a cruise.  Thanks!

Yes you must complete it for any form of entry into Canada within 72 hours of entering.

This happened to us. Not really sure how they enforce this. Obviously some bureaucrats dreamed this up. We arrived in Vancouver on 7/21 to board cruise the next day. Had done all the ArriveCAN and VeriFLY-annoying, but fairly easy next to what we had to do to cruise out of Malta last year. A friend I was traveling with told me about the random testing, but we thought we’d be notified in some way if we’d been chosen. Whizzed through customs-barely looked at anything. Then later in the evening I checked email and my husband was flagged for random test. You have 24 hours to get test done. Our understanding was you would be notified within 15 minutes of arrival. By email???? Who checks email when claiming bags, going through customs, locating transportation, ect…

I was furious, but afraid the expensive vacation would be ruined if we didn’t follow through. Hotel found us a testing site which we ubered to and back. He did test, but they don’t give you results there-have to send it out to lab. Meanwhile we are boarding ship within a few hours so how were they going to find him?? Never heard a thing. What a waste of time and money. If you are going to have random testing at least pull people aside at airport like TSA does.

    such a scam

Was your ship disembarking in Canada at the end of the cruise or was it disembarking in the USA and you were not returning to Canada?  If leaving Canada never to return wouldn't you be ok not to have taken the test since they don’t know if you have taken the test for several days anyway and you’re already in the USA by that time.

We did the test one day in advance at Walgreen's while still in Florida.  It was checked very carefully at the tent where we embarked.  I accidentally handed them my vax paperwork instead of test results and they caught it immediately.  DUH. This was in Toronto for an Octantis sailing last month.  GREAT cruise!

We are flying in one day early on a Wednesday for the cruise out of Vancouver. We board on a Thursday. Can we take the antigen test anytime on Tuesday without trying to time it with the time we think we might board and a 3 hour time difference (3 hours earlier) from where we are flying from? So anytime on Tuesday would work for the test?

I promised I’d post an update. We sail on Saturday.  I contacted Customer Services again yesterday as I hadn’t  heard anything. This morning I woke to find an email saying they were pleased to advise that they were able to accommodate all my dining requests. My Journey hasn’t updated to reflect this but at least I have the email.

l have spent a lot of time trying to sort this out. The system isn’t working for some reason. I did make me wonder whether I should use a TA next time so they can sort it out!

Did you get to make reservations at the main dining room each night?

Isn’t it ridiculous?  We had to do the Air Can at the Atlanta Airport…then, we got to the port in Vancouver and our “tests” were 4 hours late!  We had to pay $75 each for new tests…negative…and then we got on the ship…(of course, we are totally vaccinated and boosted…we glow in the dark!) Canada just does not want the business…it is the MOST restrictive country in the world!  Won’t be going to Canada again until they get sane!

What do you mean your test was 4 hours late? What kind did you take and when did you take it and when did you board? We are going next week and are very stressed by trying to figure out every thing we need to do correctly. It is taking the excitement we should be feeling for their trip away completely!

Wow. So every single table for two was booked in both restaurants at every time period for the entire cruise? Nothing at 8 pm, even? Are they short-staffed or what?

If they can’t accommodate you once you’re on board, they need to offer you a very nice consolation prize. And they need to change their marketing.

I got on as soon as the reservations opened for our DV category room. Only times left for reservations any night at the two speciality restaurants was 9:00pm! Way to late for us to eat.

Walgreens answer was less than informative, as you point out 👿. I remain confused by the same rapid vs 72 hour issues you describe and find their answer is conflicting.

However, now that Viking has ceased their pre-boarding test, you should be subject to the Canadian government rules. Those require proof of vaccination, filling out the ArriveCan app information and either an antigen test 2 days prior to boarding or a molecular test up to 72 hours before.

The good news for you is that Canada accepts numerous molecular tests, not simply PCR ones. From the government website at

    https://travel.gc.ca/travel-covid/travel-restrictions/cruise#requirements

    Molecular tests
       • PCR - Polymerase chain reaction
       • Nucleic acid test (NAT) or Nucleic acid amplification test (NAATs)
       • Reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP)

    >>> Other acceptable types of molecular tests <<<

Given that the rapid Walgreens test is listed as a NAAT, you should be fine with it up to 72 hours in advance. Enjoy your cruise! 🍺🥌

    Wow great information! Thank you.

Okay, I get it. I didn’t realize there was that nuance with the Walgreens test.

I called Walgreens and asked if their NAAT test is a PCR test and they said it is. Results within an hour. they also offer a PCR test that takes 48 hours so I’m confused!
I plan on doing the NAAT 72 hours before we board to meet Vikings requirements for leaving out of Canada. I hope it’s accepted!

  10. We booked our Air independently and will fly into Vancouver the day before our cruise which leaves on a Thursday. Very confused in the wording for testing on Vikings pre-cruise document so looking for someone that has actually done it. Does Viking consider the NAAT test (given at Walgreens) a PCR test. You do get your results within hours but it’s not an antigen test?

No one can give us a straight answer!

  11. Is there anyway to see what cabins are available for a Viking Ocean Cruise? On other cruise lines you can go on line to book a cruise and it shows you what cabins are available for you to pick.

I can’t find anywhere on line that lets you book a cruise on line or see what cabins are available without contacting Viking. We chose a cabin and booked it but want to keep an eye open for cancellations that may come up in the location we want to switch to. I wanted to keep checking.

  12. Oh wow! I had no idea that this was the case. I just did google it and found out they are in financial trouble for sure! I don’t want to have to worry about them going bankrupt by next June!

    Thanks!!

How did you like your cruise?

  13. We are booked on the Into the Midnight Sun Cruise in June 2020. Bergen to London. We want to fly Premium Economy and can find airfare on Norwegian Air much cheaper than using Viking Air Plus. Flying from Florida to London to Bergen on the way over and direct from London to Florida on the way back. I am not familiar with Norwegian Air and wondered if anyone has used it or knows about it. Good time and decent layover.

  14. I just got home from my Avalon cruise.

My air tickets were issued in October for July cruise and that is when I picked my seats.

We had awesome flights. Vancouver to Frankfurt to Budapest.

Home was Prague - Munich- Vancouver.

    Can't complain about anything.

Did you book your flight through Avalon or on your own?

  15. I found some old threads on NCL's towel policy but nothing recent. We are sailing on the Escape tomorrow. We like extra towels to cover the length of the loungers so we usually get two towels a piece. Does NCL let you have extra towels or should I bother packing some? I really hate to take up room packing towels!!

  16. An excellent scanner is called your phone camera. If you all you need a signature page sent, sign it, take a pic and send it to your realtor.

The Internet cafe prints for 0.50 per document.

Wow, such a simple suggestion! I'll ask our realtor if that is acceptable. Since we are selling our house it would be just to sign a bid from a buyer or to sign counter offers. The bids are always under a time limit so didn't want to miss any. Thank you so much to everyone for all your helpful responses. I did find an app for my iPad/phone called Adobe Fill and Sign DC that lets you open Documents emailed to you, sign using your finger or stylist and email the document back. I had no idea such things existed.

  17. We are taking a cruise on the Escape next week. Our house is on the market and we are wondering if an offer comes through while we are in the ship how we could respond? Is there a scanner on the ship where we couple print any paperwork from an email from our agent, sign it, scan it and email it back to our real estate agent? We don't want to miss any possible offers. We won't have any phone service for the week but will be checking our email daily at the Internet cafe. Thanks for any information anyone has!
