  1. Maybe contact Christopher Elliot.  He has a staff that deal with theses types of issues.  Also try the Ombudsman from Condé Nast Traveler magazine.  There is no charge for their services.

good luck. Sorry that happened to you. That is a lot of money to lose.  Those voucher things caused problems for a lot of people.

  2. This almost happened to us in December at the Miami airport. Our AA  agent for our flight to Santiago  started asking us lots of questions.  She told us we needed several forms completed before she would check us in. These forms all were required for travel to EasterIsland.  She wanted the name of our hotel, all kinds of info.  We were going to Easter Island a few days later, not directly.  She was very unreasonable and insisted we needed them, while we insisted we did not, as our tour guide was handling all that.  After a long back and forth, she went to talk to a supervisor (which we had asked for several times). She was gone for 20 minutes. She finally returned and said,    well you don’t have to have them done now, but you will-later.  And made some snide comment about she knew something we would need done and we would find out after we got to Chile.   We were so aggravated that I never got her name,  as I would have reported her.  Luckily we were there very early so we did not miss the flight.

Recently on another site, I read another traveling toChile had the same issue at a different airport.  There is something not clear in the AAregs about travel to Santiago.

I am so sorry this happened. Don’t listen to the ones trying to lecture you.

http://elliot.org has a list of contacts for all types of travel companies, including Viking.   He helps out with travel problems. You can also just contact Elliot directly from the website.  Sorry I could not figure out how to post a photo of the contacts. It includes Torsten too.

also Condé Nast has an Ombudsman column for travel problems. Good luck and keep trying.

  4. From Oslo, We did the Norway in a Nutshell train trip.  In Komfort Klass, which was so much better than regular.  We booked through Fjord Tours. We also booked the Bergen hotel for one night, and a luggage delivery service through them.  The bags were at the hotel when we arrived.

it was a great trip, with a boat ride from Flam and a bus portion too.  Don’t remember the cost but you can check on their site.  It is not escorted.  Took about 11 hours.

We have paid the deviation fee that Viking requires. They have buses going from Seward to the airport anyway. Looked at renting a car in Seward and return it to Anchorage airport. The cost was almost $2000 with Hertz versus $1300 with Budget for a mid size SUV. Using Hertz, no guarantee what kind of vehicle. Yes, car rentals are very expensive in Alaska. Keep in mind that I would have paid Viking extra money to take a bus to Anchorage and this option was not offered by them.

This seems crazy. I would call again and tell them you want to pay for the transfers.  We have taken 2 trips using our own air, and have paid for Viking transfers to the airport.

We are also boarding the Sky this Saturday.   We have moved our private tour the golden circle from Sunday to Saturday and boarding around 6pm Saturday night.

Our travel agent has confirmed this with Viking.  Viking stated when we board the ship on Saturday we are in the bubble and can no longer leave on our own, even in Reykjavik.

    Have a great trip.

    What

company did you book the Golden Circle?

  7. WE are taking the the Christmas Market cruise on the Danube in December.  We have taken more than a few trips with GCT and OAT, river cruises. Small ship adventures Including Antartica were great.  Land trips to Spain and Australia.  The Program Directors were

knowledgeable and professional in all cases. And the ships staff was great.

Thanks for all this great info. We will be in Oslo on the National holiday May 17. I understand many things are closed. As that is our only full day in Oslo, wondering what we will be able to visit that day. It seems no tours run that day either. All suggestions greatly appreciated. We arrive the day before but won’t get into town till around 2 pm, so we won’t have much time. We are staying near the train station as we are doing the Nutshell to Bergen on 5/18. Thank you

  9. We were on Norwegian Sky last week, wth an overnight in Havana. We booked an all day tour with Alain Baez. He met us at the square across from the dock. We had no trouble leaving the ship. The ship gave us an affidavit to complete and said we have to keep it for 5 years. We did ‘in support of the Cuban people’. No one even asked us a question. I had a copy of his email just in case.Very easy off and on. Alain was a great guide, perfect English. We walked around for about 4 hours, had lunch and drove all around till 6 pm. We stopped at Sloppy Joe’s, several of the beautiful hotels. Alain took us into shops and places where the people go, very interesting. Alain Baez

went out of his way to show us how the local people live. You can contact him at alainvaradero@gmail.com. Or

Alain.baez@nauta.cu. Email is slow so it takes a while. I believe he works for Discover Cuba but we contacted him directly after reading a review on TA. Highly recommended.

    UPDATE RE BERLIN Shore Excursion

I had called Viking twice and had gotten the info I posted above in #14. however I still was not sure so I emailed tellus@viking ************ yesterday. I got different info from them.

    See below for their reply:

    .

Here is the description of the Berlin Your Way Tour

"Follow your own interests in Berlin, from its most historic sites to its lesser-known gems. Transfer to the city early in the morning by train with your escort, who will provide you a map and some tips during an orientation tour. Set off on your own in the city center, with 3½ to 4 hours to explore. Visit Checkpoint Charlie and see remnants of the Berlin Wall or explore Alexanderplatz. Admire the remarkable glass cupola of the Reichstag or visit a museum on the renowned Museum Island. There are ample options for lunch on your own, perhaps at a sidewalk café where you enjoy a fine German wine and watch modern Berliners stroll by. At an allotted time, you will meet your escort at a prearranged location and return to your ship via train in time for dinner. Note that on July 25 the Gendarmenmarkt will have limited accessibility."

Berlin is not by the port that we will be docked at as it is not seaside so you will get there by train. You will leave for the train ride at 6:30 AM and the ride is about two and a half hours and arrive at approx. 9:00 - 9:45. I'm assuming the station in which you will arrive will be the main station Hauptbahnhof (Berlin Central Station), a very beautiful building that is a train station and also major shopping center, however, it is not easily accessible by foot and is a long walk from the major landmarks. From there you will take a motor coach ride to the city center, this is what people are talking about when they mention the bus ride. This will give you an overview of the city with major points. Most likely, one of these major landmarks will be the meeting point to get back on the bus to Hauptbahnhof and back home. "

So it looks like we do get a bus ride.

  11. We are also Viking Homelands and for Berlin we decided to do the Berlin on your own for free which includes the train ride and a hour or so overview tour of Berlin. I believe that overview tour includes 1 or 2 stops and then they drop you off across from theHilton by the Gendarmenmarket. You then have 3-4 hours on your own. We decided to hire a local walking tour with Brewers Tours to meet us and take us on a private walking tour. It is about 200 euros and we can add up to 4 others to split the cost or just do it by ourselves. We haven't decided yet which way we will go with it. They tell me that they can show us the following in the 3.5 hour tour.

Our 3,5-hour tour covers all the major sights and a general overview of the city center, including Prussian and Imperial monuments such as Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island and the Reichstag; WWII and **** history, including the former ministry and chancellery district, the site of Hitler's bunker and the former SS and Gestapo HQ; Cold War sights including the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie and both former East and West Berlin; as well as modern Berlin and its colorful and bright new cultural life

This tour company was highly recommended and we are looking forward to it, because if we did try to do it on our own we would likely get lost. Plus we like the fact that we can probably see more than a slower bus tour with a lot of others.

    *******************

We are on the May 19 Homelands. I called Viking today about the Berlin Trip. They said there is not a bus tour after we arrive. The train guide will give out maps but only show us the designated spot to meet for the return to the train. Basically we are on our own once we are off the train. Disappointed to hear there is not a bus ride too.

  12. We are on the May 19 Homelands leaving from Bergen. We booked our own air using Norwegian Air, JFK non stop to Oslo. We are in

Oslo a few days. Then taking the Nutshell trip to Bergen on the day before we get on the ship. Coming home we used miles.
