  1. Just an FYI. The Port of Los Angeles has begun the demo process at Ports of Call Village. This is going to be an ongoing process over the next three years. At the moment only the San Pedro Fish Market, Spirit Cruises and Ports of Call Restaurant are still open. The fish market and Spirit Cruises will remain open during the entire process but the POC restaurant is closing at the end of the year...or sooner. Acapulco Restaurant is part of this renovation and is CLOSED.29473229_10155885207185873_7634233798032359424_n.jpg?oh=de186a7d59cc44da8b7207b4e7719855&oe=5B3989B3

  2. Happy to announce some new happenings in San Pedro. Hertz has opened a rental agency across from Enterprise on 6th street so you now have two options for rental cars. Santa Monica Fish Company has bought the old Papadakis restaurant building and it going to turn it into a seafood restaurant with outside dining. Port Town Brewing should be open at the corner of 7th and Centra in a few months as well as Brouwerji West near Crafted at 22nd and Miner. Hojas Tea House is open right across from the Crowne Plaza on 6th Street and Off The Vine is looking to move to a new location at the corner of 6th and Centre. Lot's happening in San Pedro!!

  3. In my efforts to keep all of you informed about what is going on in San Pedro I have a couple of restaurant updates. Otto's Trattoria opened where Papadakis Greek restaurant used to be and was doing very well. Unfortunately, the primary owner passed away and the restaurant has since closed. Sad.

On another note, Caliente Cantina opened in the old 7th Street Chophouse location and is a major disappointment. We gave it three chances and they failed miserable in all of them. Terrible food and terrible service. No value for the price. In fact, my wife is upstairs in bed since she was up all night throwing up her dinner. Stay away for now.

On a positive note. I will be adding Blu Restaurant and Bar to my list. They are the Crowne Plaza Hotel and Bar. Brand new menu and they have really stepped it up. Pulled pork and burgers are great. Not sure if their entrees are worth the price since I have not experienced them since the menu change (the chicken and veal parmigian disappointed us in the past).

  4. Any suggestions for restaurants within walking distance of the crown plaza?

    Preferably seafood or italian

  5. We will be arriving at LAX at 7:20 PM (International Flight) and have booked Super Shuttle to take us to the Best Western in San Pedro. Can anyone estimate a time when we might arrive at the hotel? We will have been travelling since 4:00 AM and will need to find something to eat that is close by and will still be open. I am thinking that it may be 9:00 PM or later by the time we are checked in. Doesn't have to be anything fancy.

Someone suggested the Grinder. It may be open at that time but it is not close by. The closest place to eat that will be open is Ono Hawaiian on Gaffey just a few hundred feet from the hotel. The other places to eat are: Burger King, Sushi 21 and Jasmine Hana. There is also a McDonalds a few blocks to the south. Good Luck!!

  6. This might be a strange question, but can you tell me if there is anyplace within walking distance of the CP that I would be able to get a manicure? I am not going to have time to get one before I leave for my cruise & my nails are in BAD shape....doesn't have to be a fancy spa...just someplace simple... thanks!

Lanta is a better salon but you will not be able to just walk-in. You would need to make a reservation.

  7. Otto Trattoria is not OPEN!! They are at the corner of 6th street and Centre. Food is delicious. My wife got the chicken and eggplant pasta special and I had the Salmon pasta in vodka sauce. We also tried the fried artichoke hearts and felt the breading was lacking in spice but YMMV. We recommend this new place for those that want a semi-formal Italian dining experience.

There is also a new Vegan restaurant call NVDA on 6th street just west of Mesa. Great folks and delicious food as well. Try the wraps!!

  9. Does anyone know anything about Berth 46? The Celebrity Century is scheduled to disembark there on May 3, 2014. Do the shuttles (Primetime and Super Shuttle) service that pier? The online maps do not show any buildings. Have they built any since they were taken? How do they handle CBP procedures? Any help and information will be greatly appreciated!!!!

Berth 46 is a temporary facility. They only use it a few times a year so they will set up tents and other temporary structures. As far as how they handle procedures I could not tell you so hopefully someone who has experience with this Berth can help you.

  10. We've just booked the Crowne Plaza for 3 nights in May before our cruise. We plan to take a tour of LA one day and will be picked up at the hotel. We would like to visit Griffith Observatory one day. Any suggestions on the best way to get there? We've never been to LA before so any help would be appreciated. Prefer not to rent a car and drive. Love this thread. It has been a huge help.

You will need to rent a car to get to the Observatory. The Los Angeles mass transit system is not very reliable. There is a bus that takes you up to the Observatory but it only runs Saturday and Sunday and you have to get to Hollywood first. Here is the link: http://www.ladottransit.com/other/observatoryshuttle/observatoryshuttle.php

You can get there by taking a bus, subway and then bus again but that will be very time consuming.

  11. Two new restaurants should be open March 2014 in Downtown San Pedro. Trusela's Italian restaurant will be moving into the old Limani's location (which was the old Papadakis restaurant) and a sports bar is moving into the old 7th Street Chophouse location. Both will be great additions to the already existing restaurants we have in Downtown. I will give an update when they open and how the food and atmosphere are.

  12. i'd give it at least 2 hours...the 101 is going to be terrible from Woodland Hills to the 405...the 405 is going to be terrible from the 101 all the way down to LAX. You may catch a break after LAX.

Before you leave call this number:

1-888-500-5003. That is the "Ralph's Saving You Time Traffic Line" and the person on the other end can tell you what traffic is like. It is also courteous to call them with any information you have along the way.
