It is best to prebook your car to ensure they have your size/type available on rent day. The near-port locations are much smaller than the airport.

Then you have to decide if you want to use the free shuttles (not all companies have port shuttles) or make your own way to the rental office with Uber/etc. It you are in a big hurry then this may be faster if there are many ships in port.

Most folks rent from the near-port locations with free shuttles while some may go back to the airport using Uber and rent from there.

You have to compare rental costs from the near-port locations versus the airport location. Sometimes there is a difference in cost especially if you plan to drop back at the airport.

There is more to it; here is a site that explains it all with an accurate location map - Rental Car Guide for Port Everglades Cruise Passengers

Thanks so much for all the great information!

  2. so I need a place to stay for some nights before a cruise in January and then after the cruise if we want to spend some time there. We are from Canada so our dollar sucks and the hotel prices are ridiculous! Wondering if anyone has any good Air BNB recommendations they would like to share that we could look into. Thanks for your help eh! haha

  3. I somehow managed to lose my first reply, so sure hope this isn't a duplicate.....

I wanted to bump this thread up as it was so helpful to me when I was researching for the perfect hotel (for us) for our 3/11/2018 stay pre-cruise. It was so overwhelming to me to decide where to stay, and to place a set price of what I was willing to pay for a hotel. I also had to make peace with the fact that if I am willing to use Uber and forego the free shuttle service some hotels offer, it could open up my options a whole lot more. This decision further complicated my thoughts as we are flying into FLL but actually sailing out of Miami! Perhaps easy for some of you, but this stuff gets me into a tail spin!

I ended up using Hotwire, after cross referencing many sites mentioned here. I decided on the downtown Las Olas area as I felt there is a lot of things to do for one day we will be in town and water taxis sound like a lot of fun. Also to be honest, The Fort Lauderdale BEACH area scared me away as I read too many questionable reviews from that area. I decided to participate in the opaque bidding and that was stressful to me so I did add the $14.62 insurance "just in case". This is for two rooms.

I ended up landing The River Side Hotel, and am very pleased. It was set at $150 x 2. Taxes are $65.50 total and of course the $14.62. Total is $380.12. Anyone needs to remember that for my date of travel I was seeing it at anywhere from $229 per room - $249. So I have to be pleased. I will also admit my blunder, that I FORGOT to paste the secret code for $10 off!!!!!! I know its trivial, but these are the things that keep me up at night! LOL. I am being this honest so others can learn from me as I have from others. Remember once you copy a code to affix it into the little rectangular box before you hit "send".

I'm also not meaning to be a big rebel, and go off topic but this thread was instrumental in helping me narrow down my very big zone. I am open to all suggestions and recommendations on what to do on my one day stay in the downtown Las Olas area!!!!!

    HAPPY CRUISING

Hi kiminey, can you email me at Janice.hill@shaw.ca please. I think you sound like you can help me with my hotel booking at the same time.

    Thank you

  4. All right I need to bite on this one... I am also cruising on March 12 next year! We are going on a partial transit Panama Canal cruise through NCL on the Jade. So yeah... that is out of Miami Port. BUT we are flying into FLL and I nearly made myself into a zombie figuring out where to stay! It was like too many choices and I got completely overwhelmed. Almost as if I will screw it up. The truth probably is that a lot of these suggestions are great ones. And you will love where ever you choose.

That being said, I did eventually find myself favoring the downtown area consistently, and I see a lot of people here do too. Some of these hotels are quite pricey IMHO. I will just admit I am a real thrifty traveler. So, for me I wanted to spend about $150... Or LESS. I ended up on a Hotwire site, did a ton of research and as I sweated bullets just this morning I gambled on one of the opaque sites where I put in my filters for the zone I wanted. The amenities fit and I was certain it was The Riverside Hotel, which was fine by me. Other hotels in the area of Las Olas might be better and I'll admit to being greedy as well as scared of what hotel I'd get assigned to. I did purchase the insurance at $14.62, just in case I couldn't handle the card I dealt and am pleased that all my toil and worry is now behind me. The River Side Hotel it is!!!!

I plan to purchase the water taxi tickets and enjoying the sites and trivia on the whole area. It will be a Sunday, so I am also looking forward to seeing some ships embarking from Port Everglades. Anyone who has suggestions on sites, restaurants in this area please let us know! Is happy hour a common occurrence late afternoon? Even if it's a Sunday???

Thanks for all the great information. I have never really booked with hotwire but maybe I will give it a try. What rating were you searching with, 3 or 4 stars?

  5. Hello

I need to book a hotel for two nights in Fort Lauderdale prior to leaving on a cruise on March 12, 2018. I have been looking but have not been able to find a hotel that seems to be reasonably priced and clean and in a good location. If anyone could offer some suggestions for me that would be great. Coming from British Columbia, Canada, and have never been to Florida but definitely looking forward to the day we get to spend in Fort Lauderdale.

  6. We booked into a shared Shore Excursion to visit Athens. The van was ready and waiting when we disembarked from our ship. Very nice van with a driver and our tour guide Georgia. Georgia was very knowledgable and lots of fun. We got to the Acropolis early before all of the crowds and heat. Our group was a small group of 10 which is way better than the large groups from the ships' shore excursions. We got to see a lot of sites, acropolis, pantheon, olympic stadium, changing of the guards, and the new acropolis museum. We also had a couple of hours free time in the Plaka which was awesome. I would highly recommend this tour company.
