I am an independent tour guide living in Leilani Estates. The ships are stopping at both ports, Hilo and Kona. The air quality on the Hilo side is usually very good. Sometimes, on the Kona side, there will be haze (vog) in the sky but it shouldn't be an issue. Even though Volcanoes National Park is closed, you'll have a fantastic time...there is so much to do here.

Does anyone know how long this hike takes. Is it worth doing.

Can you rent a car do the cave hike and see VNP, return the car and get back to the ship by 4:30pm

You can go as deep into the cave as you like. I would say it's about 1,500 feet to the end...maybe a little more. If you go to the end it will take about 30 minutes one-way. Be sure to bring flashlights!

Depending on how much time you spend in VNP will tell you if you have enough time for Kaumana. The cave is about 20 minutes from the port.
