I have found that the accessible staterooms book out very early.  I have 2 upcoming cruises and am forced to be in a regular cabin.  Sure hope my scooter fits.  I don't think the cruise lines really check if someone really needs an accessible cabin.  They ask, but don't require proof.  I know people who book these cabins for the extra room.  It's really a shame folks who really need one can't get one.

On 2 cruises we rented a scooter for my DH to use as he was recovering from extensive foot reconstruction surgery and would get tired with the long walks on the ship. The only problem that we had with a regular stateroom was getting the scooter around the bed. In both cases the bed was next to the bathroom and it was VERY difficult to get the scooter beyond the bed. On the KDamn we had to remove parts in order to do that and on the Celebrity ship because of the room shape there was enough room to park it next to the bathroom and still open the door. He didn't have much trouble getting it through the door but he had lots of practice with his scooter at home. Good luck and hope you enjoy the cruise.

  2. It has been about 3 years since we had been on a Celebrity ship. At that time it was possible to pay a certain amount of $$ (forgot the price) and have unlimited laundry service. I just wondered if this is still available? Thanks in advance...Barb

  3. Hi! A quick question for those of you that have cruised from San Diego. I've posted this on the disabled board and there was a suggestion that I also post here.  How long is the walk to get on the ship in San Diego? We will be renting a scooter for my husband to use on our cruise but we were wondering how long the walk is from the dock onto the ship. He can walk  but will have a wound boot on and it can be tiring. I  was trying to decide whether or not we should request a wheelchair for embarcation. We are familiar with Ft Lauderdale and Baltimore but not the West Coast ports. Thanks for any help.

  5. First...THANKS to everyone on their great advice about scooters! We were on the Koningsdam for a Thanksgiving cruise and rented a scooter. When we originally made the reservation we thought that my husband would have no trouble with the cruise so we booked a regular veranda. However as life goes he was advised by his doc to stay off his foot as much as possible so I rented him a scooter. When we arrived at the room the scooter was in the hallway and it didn't take us long to figure out why....because of the placement of the bed it was very difficult to get the scooter around the bed. (There was no way to drive it around the bed even if it had fit through the door.) It did work out OK as I was able to move it around by putting it in "neutral" and removing both the seat and the battery. We stored it in pieces in the cabin since he didn't need it all the time. I have had much practice with getting the scooter in and out of our PT Cruiser (taking the scooter apart) so that was a help. My husband is experienced driving it and fortunately he could walk when needed. He didn't want to take the scooter we own on the cruise so we rented one. We didn't have trouble in the dining room as my husband could walk to the table. Sometimes he would take it to the Lido and just park it and I would get food for both of us. We did not take it off the ship as he didn't want to. We tried to pick excursions that didn't require much walking. Hope things work out. Barb

  6. My husband and I were there in November and he had on a wound walking boot and was using a cane. I just held my breath as we went up the steps which are uneven and the distance between them varies. Then of course once the tour is done you would need to come down the same steps. Make sure that you look at the pictures because I can't imagine going up and down while carrying a rollator. Enjoy if you go!

  7. We were on the sailing too and you have saved us from suite envy. We were offered an upsell to a suite from a veranda but didn't get back in time and so nothing was available. We wanted a suite because it was bigger (or so we hoped) and have never had one. Now I don't feel so bad about not being able to take advantage of the upsell!

My DH was using a mobility scooter part of the time and it VERY interesting getting it around the bed. At the time we booked he didn't need a scooter but from these boards I knew that getting it into the room could be difficult but never imagined it would be harder to get it around the bed!

  8. Hi,

Thanks for the info on the train. We are flying into Ft Lauderdale and then out of Miami the next day and doing the opposite on our return to the States as it is easier to get a flight into Lauderdale for us since BWI is a Southwest hub. Our hotel on the way down is in Miami so the train seems like the perfect solution.

    Thanks again,

  9. We have encountered what others have said. We had a hotel say that they couldn't take a Travelers Check because they didn't have enough cash to make change but I had not called ahead to check to check. (This was about 4 years ago in the Southern US.) We also found that banks (not the one we use) were hesitant to cash one and at one bank the teller, a young lady, didn't even know what they were. We have however used them on cruise ships since and had no trouble. Good luck!

  10. We also went to Rome a few days early and did a tour of the Vatican gardens which we booked thru the Vatican website. It was given on only on Saturday, I believe, but it was worth it! It was a big group but still quite enjoyable and VERY peaceful. My DH and I saw many behind the scenes parts of the Vatican grounds. What ever you do enjoy!

  11. Hi...We too just returned from Iceland (Nov 9th) as we went hoping to see the Northern Lights and were successful. Gas is still around $9/ gallon. Also we used our credit card for many things and did not need a pin. We were on a land tour and because of the length of time we spent there we didn't want to take as much cash as we thought necessary. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to answer them if I can.

  12. WE are thinking of doing a trans atlantic cruise that stops two days in Iceland. I was wondering what the sunklight hours and temperatures are like at that time of year. What typical clothing would we need to wear while out on tour. We are a couple in our sixties and my wife is concerned that she will not be uncomfortable and I am trying to convince her otherwise as Iceland is definitely on my bucket list.

We just returned from Iceland (11/9/13) and while it was cold we were able to keep warm. Our friends from North Carolina were also able to stay warm and they left Maryland to avoid the cold. We are all in our sixties. We were not on a cruise but rather a tour that was centered around viewing the Northern Lights and other natural wonders of Iceland. I usually wore "cuddl duds" under my jeans as well as the under a turtleneck. Since the turtleneck was of a lighter variety I added a sweater and of course a coat. Because we encountered wind I added a scarf, gloves and hat as well as the hood of my jacket. The only time I was really cold was in the wind at night as we were viewing the Lights.

We really did enjoy Iceland and the people we encountered were some of the nicest folks we have ever met in our travels. I hope you are able to convince your wife as truely Iceland is a beautiful country.

  13. Karlth,

This has been so helpful..thanks! We are not cruising to Iceland but rather doing a tour the first week in November to see the Northern Lights (hopefully) along with your beautiful countryside. We know that it will be cold and that February would be a better time but November was the only time that would work for our friends who are going with us. My question is about snow amounts that time of year. Generally how snowy will it be then? We will be staying in Reykjavik, Reykholt, South Iceland (near Hekla) and Skaftafell.

Thanks so much for any help,

    Barb
