  1. I have since talked to a few people from our cruise afterward.   They did say it didn't seem to be as good as other SS cruises they had been on.  So maybe it was just that crew/boat?  Maybe they are having trouble with staffing?

  2. Went on our first Silversea cruise this week, Alaska inside passage on the Silver Muse.  Previously had done Carnival cruises when my son was younger.   Last time was about 6 years ago.

Not sure if the cruise line has gotten worse or my expectations were too high?

I guess I was expecting the quality of food to be better.  Also expecting much better service in the restaurants/bars (we had to wait 2 hours for entrees on two different occasions).  Our butler was awesome and the rooms were great.

Was hoping they would have crab legs and oysters on the menu.  Never saw them except in Indochine, where the crab legs were doused in a sweet sticky sauce one night.  There did seem to be plenty of Halibut and Salmon.

Also, the variety of whisky , tequila and gin was limited compared to the alcohol available on the drink package we paid for on Carnival.   Again, figured since it was a more upscale cruiseline they would have some higher end alcohol.   Makers mark and Buffalo trace was about it for bourbon.

In general, there were a lot of better things, but not everything was better.   Also, price wise not 2x/3x price better.

Maybe cruising, in general, has gotten worse since 6 years ago and SS is just following the trend?

  3. So my mom is turning 80 in 2023.   We had talked about maybe doing a family reunion cruise to Alaska when that happens over the last few years.  If we did end up going I was figuring Princess, because we wanted to see Glacier Bay, and the prices seemed reasonable.

Today she calls with my brother and sister-in-law on the line out of the blue, saying they booked an Alaskan cruise for her Birthday in 2023 on Silversea for 7 days p!us land for $15k/couple.  My wife and I could come if we wanted.    Also maybe my son, in college (20).   I was pretty surprised, because I didn't know anything about it and wasn't asked about dates, times or anything.   They were all excited about going on a luxury cruise.   I guess I don't care about the luxury.

I was kind of annoyed about being asked without being involved, but I think I'm over that.    The question is...   Should we feel obligated to go.   It's her 80th birthday.  I do want to hang out with my family, although I do see them once/year.   $15k sounds like too much.   I think equivalent trip on Princess is like $5-6.  Also for $15k, I don't think I would bring my son.   A little nervous about COVID possibilities too.

I guess I feel like, if they really cared about other people going they would have figured out a budget that worked for everyone and did some planning as a group?    Maybe I'm overthinking it.  Anyone else have a similar circumstance?

  4. Just came back from the Carnival Splendor 3/17 cruise. We went to Las Caletas on our 2nd day at Puerto Vallarta. Had an awesome time there. It's a beautiful location. We booked directly through Carnival about a month before the trip and it was $145 per person.

I talked to someone else on the ship after we did the excursion. They did the Carnival Scuba Excursion (not sure of the exact name) for $109. They ended up going to Las Caletas on our boat, doing Scuba at Las Caletas and then enjoying Las Caletas with the rest of us.

Not sure if this is some fluke because of weather or something, but if I had known, I definitely would have done Scuba and saved $35 per person.

Anyone know if this is the norm?

  5. Going on the Carnival Splendor on 3/17/18. Puerto Vallarta for one afternoon (12pm-) and the next day until 3pm. Also Cabo from 7:30am-3:30pm.

My wife and myself (50 years) and a 16 year old. My wife has a disability where she walks pretty slow and has balance issues.

Want to do something more extreme with my son for one stop and maybe something with everyone at another stop. Don't want to spend a lot, but if it's worth it..maybe. In the past, I've never booked excursions directly with the cruise, but it seems like the times make it harder to book something separately. Especially in Cabo with a Tender Port.

We've been to cabo on a cruise and for a week. We've been on some boat rides there before, seen the whales and beaches. I was thinking of maybe the Wild Canyon UTV Expedition with my son. No reviews on Carnival's site though. Anyone done this?

For Puerto Vallarta, Not sure... We have an option for Tuesday afternoon/evening. Maybe Rhythms of the night. or Wed morning, Las Caletas? Both are expensive, but maybe worth it.

    Any outside ship options?

  6. We haven't cruised in about 7 years. We are going on the 3/17 Mexican Riviera cruise from Long Beach.

I purchased last minute (last week).

The options when checking in were (Waitlist) for 8:15pm dining. Also, arrival at 1:30pm on the day the ship leaves (4pm).

We are flying in the night before.

Can we arrive at the boat before 1:30pm? It used to be that you could, but I've seen some people say they won't let you on until your boarding time.

Also, if there was only one option for dining, and we are wait-listed, what happens?
