  1. Wendy,

Fellow retirees (from the company that I worked for) said that it can take about one year to adjust.

I've reached a point where I realize I need to venture out, explore interests, extend and accept invitations, etc.

Yesterday I went to a local museum that offers free admission on the first Sunday of the month.

I recently started using a spreadsheet to plan potential activities, tasks, TV watching, meal planning, books to read, etc.

This seems to help with providing some structure but with the beauty of still being able to do as I please.

Former co workers tell me that the job has become even more frustrating, and I delight that I no longer have to endure the frustrations.

    Best wishes to you,

    Annette

  2. I retired June 2010 after counting the days for two years.

It was a great relief to stop working; I feel relaxed, have time to take walks, and cook/eat good meals.

At times I feel a little lost but I guess it takes some time to adjust to retirement.

To my surprise, when I look back, it seems that the years of working went by so quickly.

For me, it was kind of like looking back on raising my kids (it went by so quickly), and I tend to remember only the good parts.

My words of encouragement to people who are counting the days:

Enjoy it (work) as best you can; it goes by so quickly.

I can't go but it was fun running across such a bargain.

I would have liked to have met Nancy.

My condolences to her family and friends.

  4. My last day of work at present job will be June 11th.

I had been counting days for 2 years, and I thought it would never get here.

When it came time to initiate the retirement process, I actually felt fearful about the unknown and wondered whether I should stay longer for security or maybe because it was what I was used to.

But I overcame the fear, and made the decision to retire,

    and I feel so relieved.

It isn't just the freedom of time but also the freedom of mind and soul.

I don't know if I will be able to stay retired as I may need to get another job in the future but it will be a new adventure :)

  5. I will be retiring on jan 15, 2010 and I am already counting the days. I was actually thinking of putting a count down clock on here so I can count the months, days hours, minutes and seconds til I walk out the door for the last time. This will be the last time the County is offering lifetime health benefits. It was funny when they posted my position (within hours of my putting in my paper work) I had emails asking me if I knew my job was posted. I am so ready to retire, even though I love what I do, it will be fun.

    January 15th :)

    Enjoy

  6. He's being forced into retirement. If he doesn't go now, he'll actually lose retirement income. Besides, he HATES (not a strong enough word) his job, so it's all the reason he needed. He's got 40 work days left. He's not counting, but I am. Can't wait for him to get out of there! I'll continue to work for a few more years.

It's scary because he's still going to need to find another job, and in this economy . . . well . . .

But no matter what happens to us after January 15, it's gotta be better than what he goes into every day now.

And to celebrate, we're taking a barefoot cruise in early February! It's something he's always wanted to do, and darn it, he's earned it.

(This is the first time I've been on the 55+ forum. I think I may like this place. I'll have to do some more poking around.)

    January 15th :)

Best wishes to you and your husband.

    Enjoy your cruise in February.

  7. Two retirements down, one more to go <Grin>. I didn't do any count downs. I just worked until they pissed me off and then retired. If all goes well, I have seven more years here before eligible then if I am still enjoying myself will stick around, but if not, well it will be Bu Bye for the last time <G>... Then it will be full time vacation time <G>...

I am hoping to make it to 10 years at current company.

But will need to keep working for health benefits.

Looking forward to the option of doing something different and shorter commute (if I can find another job).

But first need to hang on till I reach 10 years. :)

  8. December will be 37 years for me at present company, and that is enough. I'm leaving on 12/31/09. Haven't put papers in yet, but everyone knows my intentions. Will submit papers on or around 12/01. WooHoo:D

I am so excited for you. :)

It is fun to get vicarious enjoyment for someone else.

In September, a coworker recalculated his finances and discovered that he could retire. He put in his two week notice, and had a big smile on his face for the entire two weeks.
