  1. Well, I was disappointed for a couple of days with our Hurtigruten cancellation.  But on Friday I booked Crystal Endeavor for Jan 4 Buenos Aires/Jan 5 Ushuaia. And, the ship looked so good to my husband, he is tagging along on this one. ☺️

So, I will also be watching Argentine restrictions until then.

And, will still be tracking the R. Amundsen to see just how long she does take across the Atlantic!

  2. Well, looks like each extra knot means a day quicker. Be it 16 or 20 knots, guess Fram needs to leave in the next few days!
If it does, then R Amundsen looks good.
But, I still think it’s all moot with the 5 day quarantine.😢

No responses from Hurtigruten to my emails to as to status of cruises. Thought they’d still feed me an “all is well” canned text.

  3. I was using the ship-technology website that has top speed of 16 knots for the MS Fram which makes it impossible for them to do the cruise they are still selling online.

Maybe the website that I am using to calculate travel time is too pessimistic. Ports.com has 23.5 days from Andalsnes, Norway to Valparaiso at 16 knots.

I just checked the Norwegian site and it is definitely not listed as cancelled.  Please check it yourself to verify.  If you use google chrome it will translate for you, but the dates are pretty obvious.

Yes, they put it back on the Norway site a couple of days ago. The ship hasn’t left Norway yet, but still has time as can get to Valparaiso in 21 days or so at top speed. I‘d be worried if I was on the Fram‘s 10/15 cruise, too.

Think the deciding factor will be if Hutrigruten and Chile can figure out a way for us to get around the 5 day quarantine. Don’t see that happening, but, fingers still crossed.

And, Hurtigruten is taking a toll on me! My daughter and I are booked on the Fridtjhof Nansen  Buenos Aires- Lisbon TA in April and it’s still listed, but pricing is gone and says booking unavailable??!! They haven’t answered my enquiry yet.

We booked (for Jan 22) via the .no site. I just checked the cancelled cruises list and, oddly, the list is different between the US site and the Norwegian site. Two October Antarctica cruises are included on the .no site. Here’s the list on the .com (US) site:

    • 01.10.2021 | Panama and Peru – Through the Panama Canal and Along the Andean Coast | MS Fram
    • 05.10.2021 | Caribbean Sea – Hidden Highlights and sailing through the Panama Canal (Itinerary 2) | MS Fridtjof Nansen
    • 09.10.2021 | Andean Coast – Expedition from Jungle to Desert (Itinerary 1) | MS Roald Amundsen
    • 19.10.2021 | Andean Coast – Expedition from Jungle to Desert (Itinerary 2) | MS Fridtjof Nansen

    • 23.10.2021 | Antarktis, Patagonia, chilenske fjorder – En oppdagelsesreise (sørgående) | MS Roald Amundsen

The text above the .no list (translated) is “Due to international travel restrictions and closed ports, we have canceled a number of expedition cruises. See list of all cancellations in the overview below.”

    ???

Well, that seems to clinch it. Cruise is a no-go. Hurtigruten probably hoped for more with Chile‘s new easing of restrictions today. They are now allowing foreign tourists back into country. Would have worked, but require 5 day quarantine even with fully faxed and negative PCR which is ridiculous. Don’t see how that will help their tourism much.

    • No upcoming Antarctica voyages have been cancelled.
    • Passengers are to continue making travel arrangements.

      Whoa! Maybe we are going!

Greg, are these emails in response to questions you‘ve emailed to Hurtigruten? Just curious, as I’ve never received an email from them since I booked the cruise.

It looks like the only places on our itinerary open to cruises are Puntas Arenas, Ushuaia, and Antarctica. Hurtigruten would have to switch us to some kind of 8-10 day new itinerary. Better be a good partial refund or option of cancelling. I know cruise lines all have the change of itinerary in their fine print, but losing half our cruise would be a lot.

Oh, I don’t think our cruise will be a go.😢 This seems to be the best Chile could come up with. Doubt Hurtigruten can hang on to their cruise schedule much longer in hopes of further easing of restrictions. They have no ship scheduled to go directly round trip Puntas Arenas-Antarctica as some smaller outfits do. Think that’s the only itinerary that fits this easing of restrictions as no port stops in Patagonia, Falklands, (looks like anywhere but Antarctic really) are currently allowed as of now due to Chile and Argentina covid rules.

I imagine Hurtigruten is doing a lot of mulling things over today!

Using the sea-distance.org,  it looks like at 10 knots, it takes 31 days to go from Norway to Valparaiso thru the canal, ( 39 days thru Strait of Magellan). Do they pay the canal fees or take the longer way down the other coast? Then extra days to provision the ship and all.  Trying to figure out watching marinetracker to see when Roald Amnudson  departs Norway.

Reason, we are on a Silversea Antartica sailing in mid November, and it looks like the Amundson  is the one to watch if/when it leaves... The others with later sailings will follow.

If I see any movement, I'll post here.

I’m watching for Roald Amundsen departure, too. Looks like she needs to get going by mid September. Fingers crossed!

  11. I didn’t get any email from Hurtigruten. Glad to see it! When I saw all of the cancelled cruises prior to ours, but not ours, I hoped the company was just trying to get her to Chile unscathed. Fingers crossed that it works! Guess it depends on Chile getting covid under control so that we are allowed in. Chile’s covid cases going in right direction for now…

  12. Since there is no Hurtigruten roll call section, thought I’d ask here if anyone is booked on the Oct 23 2021 cruise from Valparaiso, Chile?

As this is a bucket list trip of mine that husband has no interest in, last month’s no single supplement offer got me to reserve a cabin just in case it is a go!

  13. My husband is retired Delta, so we’re not at top of DL standby list, but we have done over a dozen European and Asian cruises and nonreved to all. We go over early on a day that business looks good. I’ve always found available business seats over just to hit the ground running, but coach home is fine. Going a few days early, the once or twice we couldn’t get business to the cruise city, we flew to another city. For example, flew to Milan instead of Venice and took train to Venice. Your having computer access to number of empty seats on a flight makes it all manageable. With Delta, you have dozens and dozens of daily flights to Europe from various departure cities and so many zed options once there. We always, always go 2 or 3 days early to see the sights at port city area. I would never try arriving day of cruise!

I don’t think I’m an especially laid back person, but, I never stress about it as there are literally hundreds of options available to get there.
