To avoid the chaos at the pier when you arrive in Boston and walk off the ship you'll be facing a large white building (Boston Design Center). Walk around the building to 23 or 25 Drydock Ave and request your Uber from there. DryDock Ave is 2 way at those points so the driver can make a U-turn (bang a uey in Boston-speak) and avoid the 1 way traffic nonsense at the Black Falcon Terminal.

    Great information. Thank you.

Correct, it is the Sumner tunnel that is having closures. But that just means the traffic is moved to the Williams tunnel. On a normal day, once on the highway the airport is the next exit from the cruise port. At this point, it's hard to predict the traffic.

You will go through immigration at your first US port. So if that is before you get to Boston, you just walk off in Boston.

Thank you for your reply. We will go to Portland before getting to Boston.

Would you book an 11:30 domestic flight on a Sunday?

  3. I am reading that the Sumner Tunnel will be closed from July5 to Aug5. Looking at a map, it appears that the Ted Williams tunnel goes from the cruiseport to Logan Airport. Is that correct? On Google maps it appears to be a 10 minute ride to the airport. Am thinking on a Sunday morning that would be pretty accurate.  Thoughts?

Am looking at a flight on August 4 that leaves at 11:35. We would walk our luggage off the ship as soon as it clears. Do we go through customs at the port in Boston?

We go to Portland fairly frequently and love the Casco Bay Ferry offerings. There are a handful of different options that just go around to the different islands, or you can take the ferry to Peaks Island and grab lunch and walk around (although availability of public restrooms on Peaks is iffy).

Does the mail ferry run on Sunday? If we catch the one at 10, we should have time to walk around the town. Maybe we will try to get a donut at Holy Donuts before we catch the ferry.

  5. Great news aboard the Emerald Star heading from Budapest to Amsterdam! We will be sailing the whole way! We got to Regensberg this morning with no problems and are headed to Nuremberg.  The cruise director said we were past the part where we might have had some issues. The colors along the River Danube have been beautiful. We've had changeable weather but have not gotten wet! We have gotten to the stretch of river that has many locks. What a fascinating way to navigate the rivers!😊

A brief look at the situation at Pfelling. At 10:45am the gauge was at 267cm. No real change is shown in the forecast but tomorrow a rise to 280cm is possible. With rain coming there is potential for more the day after. It is a little early to say more.

It is getting colder and frost could happen at night this week.

Wonder if the levels rise to 280 if Enerald Star can get to Nuremberg  by Sunday?

Yes, the Main Danube Canal is a man-made structure and the level throughout maintained at a certain depth, allowing all river cruise ships* to navigate, with a few exceptions like when ice is a problem and for regular closure (pre-determined times known to the industry/companies), etc. No problem with low water.

*the oversized AmaMagna and Crystal Mozart excepted

With that being said, do you think the Emerald Star will be able to navigate all the way from Budapest to Amsterdam beginning on Sunday ending on Nov. 10 without having to change ships or be bussed ?

    I know...that probably isn't a fair question.

  8. Hey Castro, sounds like your beach is the one for us! Last year when we were at St. Lucia, I had no desire to come back. The cab drivers on the streets outside the cruise port were so pushy. We got back on the ship without even going to a beach. Now that I know there is a beach closeby, we would like to reserve 2 chairs on Feb. 20. We will be on Grandeur also.

Sorry not to meet you that day.

    Cheers,

    Susan

  9. Southwest allows 62 inches for their suitcases. I bought a piece of Samsonite soft side 29 inch luggage. If I measure just the suitcase I come up with 60.5. When I add the wheels it is right at 62. The lady from southwest said they include the wheels in the measurement. Would you risk taking it? I will watch the weight for sure...but is it cutting it to close. I don't want to pay 100 bucks if it is a tad over.
