We go to Portland fairly frequently and love the Casco Bay Ferry offerings. There are a handful of different options that just go around to the different islands, or you can take the ferry to Peaks Island and grab lunch and walk around (although availability of public restrooms on Peaks is iffy).

Does the mail ferry run on Sunday? If we catch the one at 10, we should have time to walk around the town. Maybe we will try to get a donut at Holy Donuts before we catch the ferry.

  2. Great news aboard the Emerald Star heading from Budapest to Amsterdam! We will be sailing the whole way! We got to Regensberg this morning with no problems and are headed to Nuremberg.  The cruise director said we were past the part where we might have had some issues. The colors along the River Danube have been beautiful. We've had changeable weather but have not gotten wet! We have gotten to the stretch of river that has many locks. What a fascinating way to navigate the rivers!😊

A brief look at the situation at Pfelling. At 10:45am the gauge was at 267cm. No real change is shown in the forecast but tomorrow a rise to 280cm is possible. With rain coming there is potential for more the day after. It is a little early to say more.

It is getting colder and frost could happen at night this week.

Wonder if the levels rise to 280 if Enerald Star can get to Nuremberg  by Sunday?

Yes, the Main Danube Canal is a man-made structure and the level throughout maintained at a certain depth, allowing all river cruise ships* to navigate, with a few exceptions like when ice is a problem and for regular closure (pre-determined times known to the industry/companies), etc. No problem with low water.

*the oversized AmaMagna and Crystal Mozart excepted

With that being said, do you think the Emerald Star will be able to navigate all the way from Budapest to Amsterdam beginning on Sunday ending on Nov. 10 without having to change ships or be bussed ?

    I know...that probably isn't a fair question.

  5. Hey Castro, sounds like your beach is the one for us! Last year when we were at St. Lucia, I had no desire to come back. The cab drivers on the streets outside the cruise port were so pushy. We got back on the ship without even going to a beach. Now that I know there is a beach closeby, we would like to reserve 2 chairs on Feb. 20. We will be on Grandeur also.

Sorry not to meet you that day.

    Cheers,

    Susan

  6. Southwest allows 62 inches for their suitcases. I bought a piece of Samsonite soft side 29 inch luggage. If I measure just the suitcase I come up with 60.5. When I add the wheels it is right at 62. The lady from southwest said they include the wheels in the measurement. Would you risk taking it? I will watch the weight for sure...but is it cutting it to close. I don't want to pay 100 bucks if it is a tad over.

  7. We are also interested in something for our 4 hour wait from leaving the ship until checking in for our flight.

We have been to San Juan numerous times, and have done the fort, rain forest, and city tours. Also shopped OSJ to death.

Any new suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

How about a Bacardi Rum tour? I know Royal Caribbean offers an excursion off the ship to the Rum factory. They store your luggage on the bus then take you to the airport. I think that is how we will spend our final day in San Juan.

  8. I have used VRBO in Hawaii and in Puerto Rico with no problem. Just be sure and read the reviews. A lot of the rentals have a 2-3 day minimum or even longer so be sure you check for that. I haven't stayed in Isle Verde so can't help you there.

Thank you. I found some listing on airbnb also in the Ocean Park area. I just joined, so am waiting to hear back from the people that are renting the rooms! It sounds like a nice place close to the beach for a reasonable rate!

  9. Has anyone had any luck using vrbo to book a room before or after a cruise? There are lots available. Several caught my eye in Isle Verde. We will be flying in on a Saturday and cruising from the Pan Am dock.

Does anyone have a particular area they like? We were thinking of a place near the beach... but it isn't that necessary since we are getting in at 5:30 pm and plan to leave for the cruise ship around 11 am.
