  1. How do I find out how many cruise ships will be in port/tendering on September 13, 2014??

In other words how early do I need to set the alarm to get a tender number to get off the ship to line up for the tender and then at the cable car and then at the bus to get to Oia.

I'm not mentioning the line up for the bus back to Fira and the subsequent lineups for cable car/ tender back to my womb - the Noordam.[/qu

The port load that day is showing 3 ships with a total of 4800 passengers. They all arrive and leave at about the same time. It will be busy. There could also be some smaller ships. They aren't always included on the ships in port list.

  2. We went to Lucca, from Livorno, by train. It was cheap and easy. The total cost of our transport was 22.60 Euro for the two of us. That included a shared taxi ride to Livorno train station and back. We just asked if anyone was going to the train station. There were lots of 8 passenger vans people were sharing. The cost per van was 24 euro, so 6 Euro a couple. Our train tickets, bought on the Trenitalia website, for the two of us, were 10.60 Euro return. There is a train change in Pisa but it is quite easy. The train station in Lucca is right outside the wall.

The trip takes about an hour including the transfer at Pisa. We caught a train at around 8:30 and came back on the 15:17 (3:17)train which was plenty of time for a 7:00 departure.

Lucca is a pleasant spot. Easy to navigate. But get a map at the tourist center. We got lost in the small, windy, twisty streets but just went up to the top of the wall to figure out where we were. If you are a shopper there were lots of little shops.

  3. You are overreaching. Unfortunately, La Spezia is further from Florence than Livorno and you'll spend more time getting there and back, I don't think you can reasonably expect to also squeeze in a stop at Pisa. Just getting to Florence requires between 2 - 2.5 hours of train travel, plus time to and from the stations.

Pick one or the other. Getting there by train is pretty easy.

If you don't have your heart set on Florence or Pisa, consider Cinque Terre. It is easily done from La Spezia. It is a very different kind of Italian experience.

  4. We plan on doing both as well. I hear the views from the ferry are awesome.

It is pretty ride, although the boat can be crowded. It is the best way to get a glimpse of Corniglia, the third town. The boat doesn't stop there as there is no dock. The train stops less frequently and it is a long steep uphill walk to the village. There is a shuttle bus, but every time you have to make a new connection you lose time to actually see something.

There is little view from the train, as you travel through a series of tunnels.

  5. We will be getting off out ship around 8am (docks at 6:45 am) and going to the train station.I am wondering if there are usually men wanting to make a few euros for caring your bag over the steps. How much do they want? Looks like a lot of steps!!! Looking at booking a non refundable train to Rome at 9:40 and hoping this is enough time allowed, or should I book a later train?????

    Thanks, Judy

When we were in Venice, twice, this late spring, there were men with sort of wheel barrow carts who were offering to take bags for a fee. It didn't seem to be organized in any way so they may or not be there. We could handle our own bags but I think they wanted 10 euro.

    No guarantees however.

  6. Did you have to use the train when you visited or were the ferries operating? I have read that you don't want to visit CT if it's raining because everyone will be on the trains & the shops & restaurants are even more crowded.

We chose to mix it up because of time constraints. Some trains don't stop at all the villages. I had both the train and boat schedules and figured our how best to see as much of the area as we could.

In one day you can just get a very quick overview anyway. Unless you like hiking, for many, that would be enough.

  7. I will be in Livorno in the middle of July.My mom and I are thinking about going to Cinque Terre on the ship's shore excursion. I have read that during the summer the weekends are the most crowded...we will be there on Thursday. How crowded is Cinque Terre during the week? Do the crowds take away from the area and make it hard to find a place to eat lunch?

We visited on Friday June 13 this year, and sad to say Cinque Terre is becoming a victim of its own success. It was very busy and the area is not really suitable for large groups trailing behind a guide. Getting on the ferries is a challenge for some, as the dock really don't exist in some of the ports, Manarola in particular. The boats don't operate if it is windy. Many of the trails day trippers use, are closed due to storm damage last fall. It is a beautiful area. It was very hot and much, of any exploring, requires uphill walking. There are many cafes, restaurants everywhere. Monterosso is the largest most resort like stop. Because it is accessible by road it has the most services. Some ship tours go to Portovenere which is not one of the Cingue Terre villages. It is a nice resort town. We were glad we went. I just wish we had visited years ago before it became a destination for so many tourists. We traveled by train to La Spezia and used a combination of train and bus transport.

  8. Can you tell me where you caught this bus? Was it at the end of the long port?

We were docked near the land end of the long dock on the left hand side. NCl was over to the right and further from the land end of the dock. Where we were, there was a chainlink fence compound where the ship shuttles and tour buses were situated. We exited that area on foot (there is a green painted pathway along side the road which shows people the route to the local #35 bus which also takes you into Marseille). It is quite a long walk it appears to the public bus. Just to the left, as we left the fenced area, there was a sign for the free shuttle. You have to be looking for it as it is not very prominent. This may sound confusing but because ships dock all over the place it is hard to give detailed directions.

  9. Has anyone taken the new X80 express bus from the port to Athens? The new bus starts running at 0700 (every 30 min). The article I read mentioned you can purchase tickets on the bus for 4 Euros (all day/including subway and other buses).

I look forward to hearing how the bus is working out.

We used it in late May. Worked as described. Tickets from driver. Day pass 4Euro. Depending where you are docked it may be a little difficult to find the dock stop. We were on the Nieuw Amsterdam so just walked out the gate in the fence, which is closed later as passengers have to exit Athens through the port authority terminal. Walked to the road, crossed over the road and grass median, walked a short bit to the left and saw the sign. The sign was not prominent. There were only 4 people using the service the day we went when we left the dock and 2 coming back. We did the drop-off for the Acropolis Museum .

I hope people discover and use this service as it was great. We have used the metro before and this was so much nicer and more stress free. Of course since the ticket is a day pass for all transport in town you aren't limited to using the service both ways.

  10. I think someone in another post showed that they have extended the days to include Monday

We used the free shuttle on Sunday. June 15. The sign said Saturday, Sunday and Monday 9:00 to 5:00. We were on the Nieuw Amsterdam. They denied its existence. I asked one of the ladies in the gift shop, on shore at the dock, where it was and she gave me directions. It worked well for us but requires a bit of an adventurous spirit.

Obviously NCL had told their passengers about it as most of the people on the bus were from their ship.

  11. It is so kind of you to provide so much useful information to those of us coming to Funchal.

We will arrive on Monday, April 26 for a short visit from 2:00PM to 8:00PM.

I do not like cable cars but we would like to travel by bus to Monte to visit the Botanical Gardens. I have been searching for information and there seem to be several bus companies. Could you give me some information about bus numbers and whether or not a Giro ticket can be used? Also we will be at the port. Where do buses leave from that would be going to our destination? Once we reach Monte is it easy to find the gardens? Lots of questions but knowing ahead of time helps things go better especially with limited time.

    Thank you for your help
