  1. I've searched, and I know NCL pretty much has a no tolerance for bringing drones aboard.

Has anyone had any success getting their drone onboard? Sounds like there may have some give and take over the past couple of years but in searching this and other forums, I havent seen any recent comments on success or failure.

We will be sailing the POA in July and I want to take my drone so bad. I'm a responsible Part 107 licensed pilot with no intentions of sailing on or from the ship or anywhere near the ship when we dock. I have never flown over crowds, or my local neighborhood. And I'm not going to start on a cruise, It's HI. There's much better scenery. I want to take it elsewhere. I have no problem bringing it on, checking it, and taking it me with meveve when we dock. In fact, I would prefer that so I would not give in to peer pressure of taking for a quick flight from deck 14.

Too bad they appear to be such a stiff shirt. NCL is my favorite cruise line. At least Carnival seems a little more cooperative.

    Thanks

  2. Kona

Part of me now wishes that we had done something other than just walk around the port, but I have to remind myself that we really needed some down time where we didn’t have to set the alarm, didn’t have to hurry off the ship to get our car rentals, just didn’t have to be anywhere at any specific time. And that was really nice.

Enjoying your review! We sail in three weeks.

Our upcoming cruise will be our third on POA, and we find Kona to be the perfect unwind day! That is our day to unwind and will be the only day we will go to Walmart!

  3. I agree totally with Carribean Bound - the short walk from where the cruise ship berths (we were on Pride of America back then) will bring to a lovely rectangular shaped beach, with a Marriot Hotel, and of course a Dukes Restaurant for a meal or drinks, I think I had a lava rock beer ( a nice red colour), and dear wife had a cocktail. We swam at this beach. There is a grassed area with coconut palms just before the sand beach, and it has softest green grass I have ever come across.

There are shops for clothing etc, nearby.

I will never forget this little gem of a beach, so relaxing, and such nice swim.

After your cruise ship departs the port there, you will take in the Na Pali cliffs.

Go up to one of the higher decks, with a nice wine etc, and enjoy the beautiful coastline.

    Kalapaki Beach. http://www.kalapakibeach.org/

    Beautiful beach!

  4. We've been on the POA twice, and will have our third cruise in April!

We've had port side each time. Port side does give you a view of the Napali coastline. And give you a great view of Kona when tendered. Starboard is best for the lava sailby

    Have a great time!

  5. Skipping the luau would make this more doable. Having been to the luau, I will say I was not impressed and was very disappointed. I would prefer a relaxing evening at the Marriott at Kalapaki Beach.

Traffic can be very unpredictable and sometimes requires considerable patience.

  6. Chapter 6: Volcanoes & Waterfalls (continued)

We stumbled happily back to our cabin in time for the volcano-flow sail by which was stunning. The Captain darkened the ship which enabled steady-handed photography. The flow could be seen from forward, starboard, and (I'd imagine) aft balconies and public areas. We stayed on our balcony.

Clearly I needed a higher power telephoto lens, higher aperture, and / or a steadier hand - but here's a sample of the best shots I got . . .

Great pics! I bought a Cannon DSLR before our trip and didnt come close!

  7. Here we go . . .

Chapter 4: The Road to Hana

but that this was a “once in a lifetime” excursion and not something we would ever do again.

I agree. We rented a car and I drove the road four years ago. I have my survivor T-shirt. Wonderful trip. Loved it. But did not want to drive it again. This time, we had to do something different and chose to drive up to Haleakala on Sunday. We were so lucky!
