  1. When we sailed on the Spirit a few years ago, we stayed in 10502. The 5 suites across the front of the ship each had unique decor (think different colored wood paneling and doors) and were named for Asian cities. Has anyone seen them since the drydock? Did they retain any of the uniqueness or are they now the same generic neutral tones? NCL's website shows the same floorplan and photos for all suite categories despite differences in layout.

  2. We used it on the Dawn recently. There was sometimes a delay in messages going through, so it wasn't great if we were trying to coordinate something immediately, but it was fine if we were flexible. If everyone has iPhones, the iMessage feature is more reliable and does work through the ship wifi.

  3. We're interested in an Asian cruise in 2018 or 2019, and since we're platinum status and love the NCL suites, NCL seems to be the logical choice. Their website shows 2 Asian itineraries in March 2018 but nothing else in 2018 or 2019 and only 1 remaining this year. For other regions they have itineraries out to 2020. I know the Joy is going to cruise in Asia and will be available through NCL's Chinese site, but we're not fans of the gigantic ships, the Jewel (doing the 2 March 2018) and Star (doing 1 Asian cruise next month) are more to our taste.

Is NCL likely to release more dates in the next few months, or are they really only doing these 3 cruises and then no longer doing Asia through the US website? I was going to email NCL directly, but I couldn't find an email address in the "Contact Us" section, and I figure I won't have much luck getting a legit answer if I call.

  4. Most ships allow smoking on the port side of the promenade and pool decks and some also have a smoking lounge. But even as a smoker I can't stand the amount of smoke in the lounge or the way I smell after being in there. It's also allowed in the casino. Technically only while gaming, but that didn't seem to be enforced on Dawn last week.

  5. Moscato or White Zinfandel. I'm pretty sure they have both, although the specific wineries might vary by ship. I didn't pay much attention because I don't like sweet wines, but they may also have some dessert wines (they'll be listed as such on the list) that would be even sweeter. I think she can bring as many bottles as she's willing to pay corkage fees on.

  6. Unless they change it in the drydock, I think paneling color and which side the bedroom is on is the only difference with those 3. The 5 forward suites are all named after Asian cities with names on the doors unless they remove those in the drydock. When we sailed in 10502 (about 4 years ago), it was pretty easy to find photos of each SE cabin online. Furniture and carpet may have changed since then, but drydock hasn't happened yet, so they would still be a good representation of how the cabins currently look.

  7. I believe SE are a little bigger. Of those, 10002 and 10502 have side balconies off the bedrooms as well as forward balconies off the living rooms and appear slightly larger on the deck plans. 10502, the Singapore Suite, is absolutely gorgeous, if they don't ruin it in the dry dock and refurbishment. Keep in mind, the forward balconies aren't as deep as on Jewel and Dawn class and are much windier when the ship is moving as a result.

  8. I'm on the Getaway next week. Does anyone have any more information on this? A major reason why I chose this itinerary was for Belize. If they cancel this, it will make it the 2nd time NCL has cancelled a port I was very interested in. 2/3 NCL cruises will have cancelled a port.

Hey Nick, are you aware the ship doesn't actually go to mainland Belize? Harvest Caye is essentially a private island, pretty much a resort for ship passengers, and you don't have the ability to got to the mainland from there.

  9. You could also try using a remote app on your phone depending on the model. My Samsung Note 4 has IR blaster (remote) capability with the built in Peel app. Good luck! We sail the Dawn 2/5!

Thanks! I'll try to find an app. We're on the same sailing as you. This next week and a half can't pass quickly enough!

  10. The first letter is the general category (H=Haven, S=suite, B=balcony, etc). The second letter is how the cabin ranks within that category. With Haven and suites, it drills it down to what type of suite. Otherwise, it's NCL's opinion of desirability based on how high of a deck and position on the deck. A mid-ship balcony on deck 10 might be BA, while a mid-ship balcony on deck 8 and a forward balcony on deck 10 might both be BB, and the forward balcony on deck 8 might be BC. Higher decks get rated better, and mid-ship is more desirable due to less movement and generally better proximity to venues.

  11. Greetings! We will be traveling in a 2 br family suite on Dawn. Do the TVs or DVD players have USB inputs? If so, has anyone had any luck playing video from a thumb drive? Any file formats that were problematic? Are there DVD players attached to the bedroom TVs or just the living room?

  12. We had booked a 10 day Med cruise a few years ago in a balcony. 2 weeks before sailing we got an upsell offer for 10500, also under the bridge bump right next to 10000. The cabin made the trip that much more incredible! Sitting on the forward balcony having coffee as we came into port each morning was our daily routine. We would take the cordless phone from the room with us into port, and as we approached the ship, we'd call the butler and request ice, which was always waiting for us when we finally got to the room. After a long day exploring a city, we could come back to the cabin and just hang out in the cabin or on the balcony if we didn't feel like dealing with people.

  13. I have a penthouse suite on the Jade this April.....is the upgrade to a Haven worth it to any of you?

    Thank you

We sailed in a penthouse on the Jade a few years ago and attended a reception in the Haven courtyard. We didn't see any good reason to justify the additional cost for the Haven on future cruises on ships this size. The Jade is a smaller ship, so it doesn't have the Haven restaurant or quite the horde of people to try to avoid. Other than the private courtyard and pool area, the other suites on the ship get essentially the same perks as the Haven. And if your penthouse is one of the forward ones, the Haven can't beat the view you'll have sitting on your forward balcony having coffee as you sail into port.
