Thank you all for answering my question. I am a good walker so I just want to wander around for 2-3 hours. I don't buy anything in any ports anymore so no need to exchange money.

Will the ship and customs let me walk off carrying a bottle of water?

Also, when I leave the ship I know I must have passport with me but do I also need my Visa?

I walked off with 2 large bottles of water as I had so many from foolishly buying RCCIs "water package" and I had no issue whatsoever.  I used oldcartours.com for my 1954 Chevy convertible ride around Havana and the driver most appreciated the 1 large bottle of the 2 that I took with me.

  2. Absolutely! Don't ask the line that question however, they will always lie to you and tell you that you are required to take one of their tours.  Heard you could get off on your own from so many people and finally went on Nordic Empress last fall with 2 port days including overnight and got off on my own 4 different times!

    Yes it is.

But of course, there are other options out there - land trips with private car and guide.

The cruise lines are treating guests with contempt these days - they assume that "obedient consumers" will continue to re-book. Hence their approaches as noted on this thread.

Well cruise lines, there are many ways to spend $, cruising is just one option.

    Arrogance eventually has consequences.

    No cruises booked for me.

Could not be said better! When I first heard this I could not believe! In my 137 cruises I maybe ordered a 2nd entree 5 times.  That said, hearing this now just further cements my disdain for cruising which is a vacation the quality of which is dictated by Wall Street!

  4. I had this cabin down to Havana this past Sept 6th.  While it is small it was bright and airy.  Surely enough closet space for a shorter cruise and a big enough area to get dressed.  Ample space in the bathroom for storing things and a desk where I was able to work with my laptop.  Quiet yet convenient to a major stairwell that got me to the Windjammer quickly.  My only criticism would be that the cabin soft goods have a worn look and there are a lot of scuff marks on the walls/baseboard.  Hope that helps!

  5. Look into RCCIs Empress of the Seas. Has the most port time in Havana of all the shorter cruises. Not all but many have 2 days port time there. NCL got greedy and robbed a day from the 2 days Sky had there in Havana so it could sell the Sun's Canaveral sailings with a day in Havana. Those shore excursions "they claim you are retired to take" make major money for them.

  6. Lago Mar just 2 miles from Port Everglades perfectly fits the bill. Lots of suite accommodations with extra space for a family. Two pools one for families and the other adults only. Right smack on the sand so unlike so many other Fort Lauderdale hotels no street to cross. Prices for meals are very fair and children's menus are available for every meal. Also there is a large playground near the pool, this is very rare in any South Florida hotel. Yes the decor is old Florida and a little worn but all things considered can't be a better place in the area.

  7. Take your cruise! When it comes to cruises, there is zero changes proposed. In fact there will be more than ever! NCL just announced the Sun will be their 2nd ship sailing there regularly. The cruise lines who had earlier only published schedules short term changed their approach and dared Trump by publishing schedules through 2019. Then when his announcement was made about Cuba travel, ZERO was proposed in terms of any changes on any cruises. The only changes proposed are to those flying there independently. Cuba is an incredible destination and I can tell you after having been all over the world, I am so happy I went. Don't worry, you will be going, don't miss the opportunity!

  8. Routinely brought back sand from the Caribbean like 15-20 times between flying and cruises for a buddy of mine from the gym who is an obsessed collector of sands from around the world.

Always did it in Ziploc storage bags so readily apparent to customs and MIA and FLL and not once did I ever have a problem!

  9. Norwegian America and Home Lines. None can compare to either

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

I could not agree more on your 2 companies. Before your thread, if someone asked me the same question I would have just said Home Lines. That said, now I would include Norwegian America as well. Who can forget the quiet elegance and luxury Norwegian America epitomized.

My cruising days are over after 135 of them. My last cruise was Oasis in August 2014. Debarkarkation morning closed my book on cruising. Being rushed through the dining room with a ice cream cone like serving of powdered eggs, well that was it. The luxury, the glamour, the elegance what was once cruising is now gone!

  10. The beach at Lago Mar is outstanding with countless tall coconut palms. One of the best anywhere in South Florida.

The resort is old Florida and is a little worn in areas. The staff at the front desk has consistently been cold and arrogant as many times as I have stayed there. That said, because the beach is so outstanding, plenty of FREE parking, and no resort fee, nighttime turndown service on request, I would surely return there.

  11. You can use miles for hotels on United and American. (USAir doesn't exist anymore. Might still be a few birds that haven't been painted yet, but it's all AA for practical purposes). Plus as others have said...using airline miles for hotels (and cars) is not a very good use of miles. (value wise)

Using airline miles for hotels can YES, be a very good use if you have the status with the Frequent flyer program. I am lifetime Gold with American hence all my hotel redemptions are ONE HALF the miles as they would be with a regular Advantage traveler. That said, the reduced redemption costs associated with the new Chase Sapphire Reserve are the best on the face of the earth.

To address the point of this thread and sorry to say but any carrier other than an a U.S. carrier, is the best. The Americans whether it be American, Delta, or United, they all treat you like garbage. Go on a foreign flag carrier and with very few exceptions you are guaranteed to be treated so much better!
