    Just an update and FYI.

I was expecting a refund of taxes to my CC in the amount of $2,556. After not receiving it for 90 days I filed a dispute with my CC (Citibank).

In the mean time SB posted a curious credit to my card of $2,196 (on day 92) which was a number that I did not recognize. Citi has now resolved the dispute in favor of SB apparently accepting this amount as the legit refund without any further explanation or documentation from SB as to how they arrived at that number.

While the difference is relatively small ($360) I challenged Citi about their decision with copies of my invoices - all indicating that the amount of taxes I had paid was $2,556.

Let SB show them and me how they arrived at $2,196 as the correct amount.

    Principle at play here.

That's so weird. Such an easy thing to document!

My TA said they would not refund us when I asked 😢.  But, both of our cruises were only in the deposit stages so the insurance cost was relatively minimal.  I only insure the actual amount I have paid out,  then I up the insurance amount at each stage of payment and pay the updated dollars for the updated trip payment.

I should add, this sounds like a great strategy if a pre-existing condition is a factor. In those cases I understand that early insurance, right after booking, will offer protection.

We asked the insurer directly.  Our TA alerted us that we'd hear from them to formally agree to the credit but they contacted us directly and we asked. (I'm of the "it never hurts to ask" school of thought.)

We usually don't insure until final payment, deposits/early penalties are usually covered by credit card travel coverage or are refundable. We still lost a few hundred $ but i hope that means my TA keeps her commission. If I hear otherwise i will challenge the insurance company to make her whole.

Our Trip Insurance for our two cancelled trips did not refund us, but credited us so we could use the trip insurance toward a future trip....And, we have two years to use the funds. We already booked a cruise for Nov 2021 and used all the credits towards Insurance on that trip.....

    Good Luck!

    Jodi

Yes, we were offered that option and decided that it wouldn't work for us. Just interesting to see how different companies in the same industry approach things.

  5. Did not post previously for this roll call but am happy to report that we got our refund in about 60 days from time of cancellation notice in mid April for our cruise that was supposed to leave Reykjavik tomorrow.  It went back to the two credit cards we used. There was an especially large amount on one of the cards and we were able to get it transferred to a bank account (different bank than the CC company), that took less than a week. Since we had applied our FCC to this trip i wonder if we can reinstate it if someday ever comes.

Next project is trip insurance refund. Since there was no insurable event and they didn't have to cover any losses...    I have heard that Allianz and World Nomads were providing full refunds though we used a different vendor which may require forfeiting a pro rated amount for the period before the cancellation when the policy was still active.

I agree that the general public should not have been exposed to guests from the ship but IMO, one would need to be xxxx not to be aware of the risks in boarding the ship on the 8th March. We had cancelled our late Feb cruise 1 month earlier. (Maybe we were lucky our friend who is a Dr in ICU at the Gold Coast hospital had told us by then how terrified she was if social distancing was not effective.  She did not want to be one of those who had to decide who would get a ventilator and who would die (as has happened around the world).

Sadly people were still getting mixed messages as late as March 8. This a US mainstream news article from March 8 would lead one to think it wasn't a good idea but there wasn't leadership -- or news media--unanimity. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/08/us/politics/cruise-ship-warning.html?referringSource=articleShare

This is local Florida coverage March 9. Note attempt at contact tracing.

I just received an email they are canceling through June 30th including our May departure from Lisbon.  Same terms as before 125% in credits or 100% cash refund.

Glad to know early that it's not going to happen, still breaks my heart how much we took for granted looking forward to our trip that is no more. (June Reykjavik round trip Including upper Norway and Greenland). Given what's going on it's a pretty frivolous problem to have, we're very very lucky to be comfortable at home and grateful for the trips we've enjoyed so far and hopefully sometime again.

Kowhairbob, I don’t think I saw Miguel on the ship, but good to know for the future ( assuming there will be one)!

AMediator, I hope your parents make it home o.k.

SB Flight-ease rebooked our flights back to U.S. at what looked like good times, ( leaving the Adelaide airport early afternoon) and we were finally set up to use the SB group transport to the airport at 9 ( there was a long line and confusion at SB Square and on the guest services line, on multiple fronts,  we received a lot of misinformation). But when I looked online to check in with Qantas and get seats  I saw the airline had meanwhile cancelled those rebooked flights and rerouted us, such that we needed to be at the Adelaide airport for a flight before 10 am!  SB did not tell us, so the ship still sent a disembarkation notice as if we would be on the 9am bus and our flights were on — though cancelled and we had to be there much earlier! So I am glad I saw it on my own before going to bed and oversleeping the flight.
We are sitting at the Adelaide airport now, the TV screen showing video of Kangaroo Island, which is sadly all we will see of it in the near future.

We will be flying to Brisbane and then have an eight hour layover before our long flight to the U.S., not great after getting up at 5am,  but at least we will get home ( hopefully) before airline travel is totally shut down.

Not many people are at the airport, and only  a few are in masks.

    Safe travels!

At my request, effective midnight tonight, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and MSC have all agreed to suspend outbound cruises for thirty days. It is a great and important industry – it will be kept that way!

    That would include Seabourn.

This article implies it only applies to ship leaving US ports? (Not my usual news source, just first link I found) https://www.foxnews.com/us/royal-caribbean-and-norwegian-suspend-cruises-amid-coronavirus

  10. Confused on future cruise credit discussion. Is this about (1)  rebooking a new trip under the new cancellation policy? or about (2) future cruise credit provided as an apology for a totally rejiggered itinerary?. If based on (1)  I don't understand what one would be returning from if you never went so I’m assuming it’s the latter situation (2).  I’d also assume a future cruise credit for cancellation in lieu of a refund would not require any additional deposits because they already have a significant chunk of cash from you. If it's a credit to make up for a mushed up trip I can see why they'd treat it like a new booking. And why one could still negotiate a bit down the road.

You can interpret the advisory to only apply to the elderly if you want, but the part you quote is clearly supporting information in my interpretation.  I prefer to look first at the overall statement.

I didn’t read it as ONLY, was just clarifying that elderly (well, “older adults” which to me is a broader term than elderly but agree with you that both are fuzzy) were specifically mentioned. Upthread you had observed that

“elderly are not mentioned here” and while they were not in that first paragraph, they were, later on that State department page, and directly related to cruising.

SLSD in any event I think we both agree we want people to be safe and healthy.

  12. 22 minutes ago, SLSD said:

Here are the precise words from the State Department: "U.S. citizens, particularly travelers with underlying health conditions, should not travel by cruise ship.  " Elderly are not mentioned here--it says U. S. citizens and then mentions those with underlying conditions.

This is further down the page that Mr. Manhattan provided the link to earlier. Specifically mentions “older adults”.  Agree that it’s a pretty subjective term!

This is a fluid situation.  CDC notes that older adults and travelers with underlying health issues should avoid situations that put them at increased risk for more severe disease.  This entails avoiding crowded places, avoiding non-essential travel such as long plane trips, and especially avoiding embarking on cruise ships.

I was swabbed for the flu (negative) and had a chest x-ray (negative) and did not meet the testing protocol for coronavirus (and that wasn’t why I was there).

I have asthma and a history of chronic bronchitis. If I didn’t fly every time I felt less than 100%, I wouldn’t have my job.  If I thought (or the doctor thought) I had anything contagious, I wouldn’t be flying.

i appreciate the “go and get worse” wish.  Thanks!

I did not say that at all, (someone else did) but hope you feel better and was urging self care.

If I was the only one who could make the call on that, I wouldn’t be going.  Urgent care doc thought I’d be fine as long as I was getting enough sleep and taking the steroid they prescribed.

Did they do a test for Corona to rule it out or deemed it something else? Did they affirm that you weren’t contagious? These days especially people would understand if you had to do meeting by video.

I agree. It is a shame. There are so many "sky is falling" stories, you do not know when a real emergency might exist. The flu affects -and kills- many many more people and the media gives  it no notice.  Why?  because it is not a sexy story. I hope this is just another in a long line of over hyped stories.

Actually there is a lot of notice about the seasonal flu and a significant public health effort to get people to vaccinate and observe precautions. It's not a new thing but it's scary to note that even with herd immunity people die of it. There is also immunity developed for the flu.

This is a new virus with no vaccine option available yet, no inherent immunity and, in some settings, appears to be highly contagious and persistent.  And fatal to some. So lots of information about  prevention and precautions, especially for those who interact with vulnerable populations; updates on access to testing, which is a big problem in the US and may mean a gross underestimate of cases; updates on concerted development of a safe and effective vaccine, therapeutics, risks and vectors of transmission all seem pretty useful information.

Some people have lost loved ones so their sky has already fallen.
