Apologies for asking a question that has probably been asked and answered many times, but how on earth is the Rotterdam supposed to accommodate the people from the Zaandam?

There are no passengers on the Rotterdam, she was laid up in Puerto Vallarta with only crew on board.  There is plenty of room on her for those transferred from the Zaandam.

  2. How much does it cost (on average) from MCO to Port Canaveral......and how long does it take?  Planning on arriving very late on 11/29 and staying at the airport for a cruise leaving on 11/30.  Returning on 12/7 directly from Port Canaveral to MCO for an 11:25 AM flight (and I can't do self assist disembarkation).  Thanks in advance.

You earn one Mariner Day for each increment of $300 of spending (excludes casino) while on board.  This includes online HAL purchases before the cruise.  HAL is generous and rounds up to the next $300 increment.  Suites get double the normal credit days creditied (7 days in a suite earn 14 Mariner Days).  As you accumulate days, you can earn discounts on Specialty Restaurant dinners.  At the highest level of 5* Mariner (500 day credits), you receive free laundry and two free Pinnacle Grill dinners, among other benefits.

HAL excursions also count to earning Mariner Days while private excursions do not.

    Hope this helps your understanding.

Does this include spending in the on board shops and the spa?

Yes.  Abu Dhabi   No reason to assume San Juan is part of North America

No, San Juan may not technically part of North America, but Puerto Rico is a US Territory, as is Guam and the Mariana Islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.  They all abide by US Laws.

  5. You get your first copy of the Fun Times when you get back to your cabin after dinner on the first night.  There are not many activities on the embarkation day.  Any activities available on the first day will be announced over the loudspeakers.  Most of the afternoon is taken up by embarkation and the life boat drill....then dinner.  There might be some entertainment (the Welcome Aboard Show) which will be announced.  Introduction programs for the kids club will be available too.  Also, there may be some spa raffles, etc. available.

  6. Thousands of flights were cancelled or delayed Friday and probably just as many today due to a strong storm moving up the east coast from Florida to New England.  Ports in Florida had wind gusts of over 50, 60 and 70 mph.  Not many airlines will fly into that weather.  If you can't afford to self-insure, you need travel insurance.  The cruise lines won't give you a refund.  They sail whether you are there or not.  Sorry.

P.S. why did they refer to it as a “winter storm?” It’s not going to snow, is it?

Winter storms just don't produce snow.  They affect warmer climes with winds and severe storms.  Depends on where the storms track.  If they track south, then you get what is happening now.

  8. Just have her be a no-show.  Check her in as if she's going.  Don't tell anyone she's not coming.  Your younger son can sleep anywhere he wants after check-in.  After departure, go to guest services and have a key made for your younger son to his new room.

Port charges will be refunded for the no-show.

Do not make this harder than it has to be.  Cruise lines have no-shows all the time.

Actually if you board the ship on a port that is not the port of origin and departure, then they would have needed passports as it would not have been a closed loop cruise and it may have also been illegal according to the PVSA (saying this not knowing what the itinerary was.)

Great idea, but she said she left both birth certificates at home. Depending on where the first port is, we might have called Carnival and asked for the procedure to board. It's possible a one way flight might only be a couple of hundred, surely better than losing a weeks honeymoon. My wife and I have a running joke as she is in charge of the passports, we ask each other "who has the passports" BTW, we leave our BC's in our safe deposit box, a passport supersedes a BC.

  10. I guess it all depends on you. Are you traveling with children who need to be constantly on the go and need to be entertained all the time. Or are you there for relaxing while enjoying the islands? I LOVE the Radiance. It doesn't have the Royal Promenade, but she is a ship that is built to bring the sea into the ship (tons of glass, etc.) Lots of places to chill, but still keep busy with activities if you want to. Ovation is a ship that keeps the ocean out of the ship - so much going on inside and out on deck that takes away from the ocean and has so much to keep you busy. The Radiance has more stops in Hawaii, which I love (especially Kauai) while the Ovation does "cruise bys".

  11. Why not just pay for your kids drinks if they aren't going to be drinking the stuff that often? You can get juice at the buffet in the morning and at lunch and supper - just dispense it into a go cup or something similar. Budget it in as part of the cost of your cruise. If you do as Kelli said in her post and say you need to pay for the kids' drinks and they don't charge that is one thing. But don't abuse the system - that is why our costs have gone up and now both adults in the cabin have to buy the beverage package, not just one.
