  1. Suzycruise - I had stateroom 9320. I believe the aft received the least amount of damaged rooms. The wind wrapped around both sides of the ship so all we could see out of the back of the ship was a barrier of rain with minimal water in the room, at least compared to others. All of the glass was cleaned up by 1200 the next day so the room was perfect after that.

Thank you for answering my question.

  2. I know many people have commented on this post describing what it was like on board, but I wanted to add my 2 cents. To preface - I have worked for the USCG for 08 years and was stationed on an 87' cutter out of Rhode Island that regularly patrolled the Hudson and Long Island Sound area. I have been in way worse situations than what we experienced, but to say this trip was unsettling is an understatement. I know the ship was going to make it through the storm, but it's easy to see how others would not be so comfortable. Around 0100 I woke up to being tossed around in the room. I didn't think much of it, but my wife started to be concerned when our aft balcony door kept coming unsealed. She went out of the room to check in with guest services to make sure everything was alright. I just laid down to try and get some rest, which is when she came in and told me that "I had to see what was going on!". We went down to deck 8 where water was pouring through the ceilings by the stairs, and in the casino. The ship was leaning hard enough that our upper body was at least at a 15-20 degree angle when walking. People looked like zombies in the casino and by the elevators, trying to ask for help or to figure out what was going on. After a minute we went back up to our room and lay down again. Within 15 minutes our cabin door opened up, the balcony door seal was at least an inch from connecting, and everything on our counter flew off and all of the glass broke everywhere on the floor. My wife tried to go to customer service and at the stairs on deck 08 security asked her what she needed and told her to go back to her room and to call the desk. Everything was shut down, we weren't allowed to travel to any part of the boat, and there was no announcement. To think cruisers should expect something like that cruising out of New York is laughable from the standpoint that water was coming through the doors, the ceiling, almost all balcony staterooms, and at least 02 inches in some hallways and all with no communication whatsoever from the bridge.

I have a picture on my phone from Sunday that showed what type of storm we would be heading into. Every single weather scientist that I follow expected the worst part of the storm would be the Atlantic Ocean with waves potentially reaching 50'. I doubt they reached the 50' as predicted, but consistently 25-30 with some reaching 40'. I would be interested in looking at buoy data to know the true measurements as none of the officers I talked to would provide an educated guess. If the captain would have made an announcement at 0130 letting everyone know what to expect and to re-affirm to the guests that the ship was made for this type of weather than many would have been calmed. Instead, we were greeted by security telling us to go back to our staterooms and to just ride it out in silence. That was unacceptable, along with trying to tender people over to GSC. Anybody that looked outside before we anchored knew that it should have been cancelled, and they would know that information from the bridge. Sorry for the long post.

I was to board today in aft 9318 but flight was cancelled from .CA. just curious as to the amount of damage in cabin. Thanks.

  3. What difference does it make? You are on the ship and by morning you will be in the Gulf. What would you like them to tell you and what would you have done differently?

You sign a contract to leave at a certain time. You fly in the day before so you can board on time. You pay extra taxes on drinks while in port. Have you ever cruised????

  4. I'm on the Jade to begin a 12 night cruise. Departure was scheduled for 4pm. Cruise director just announced a 10 pm departure from Tampa due to "diving operations". We noticed the provisions being on loaded at 3:45pm so it's obvious NCL has known of said late departure for awhile. Why doesn't NCL tell it's passengers in advance? Pfft.

  5. We noticed quite a bit of maintenance going on but I'm not sure if that is normal or was related to the upcoming charters, or just related to the ship needed a dry dock. For example, we noticed the smell of paint thinner in our room one day and called down to guest services who said it was related to work being done in the next room. We also got into the elevators one day and the handrails had been freshly varnished. There was some minor construction being done on deck here and there; wiring lights, taping down power cords, but nothing excessive that detracted from the cruise.

Thank you for the info! I'm on board the JADE now. We are delayed AGAIN, not departing until 10pm due to a "diving operation." It's very crowded and I see lots of construction company crew( those wearing the neon green vests) up on deck 12 and 13. Hoping for smooth sailing once we get going.

  6. Hi! I'm enjoying your live review from the Jade. Thank you. I board her the 25th... please advise if there is a lot of construction/demolition going on... i read they took down the pool deck slide. Any other stuff going on that would detract from a smooth cruise experience? THANK YOU.

  7. just off the bway and noticed NCL refers to solo travelers for different activities. To me there is a difference between solo and single. I could be solo but still have a spouse at home or i could be what is commonly called a single but have my children onboard with me.the easy answer is nobody checks your status do whatever you want , but i'm looking for singles and possibly no interest in meeting solo travelers. any input?

I'm single and solo. Here's a hint for men, look for a wedding ring on the ladies. That usually explains their status.

I've thought of making a t-shirt stating SINGLE as well. It's more complicated for women who may want to meet a truly single man though as many who are married never bother to wear their wedding ring. Just my humble opinion after 20+ cruises.

  8. Can anybody you please tell me about what time you arrived at Vatican City/St. Peter's Square from the cruise ship pickup.

I'm also booked with ItalyTour.EU group and am very interested in at least seeing a glimpse of the POPE during his 10:30 am Papal Audience. Thank you. I asked Oscar but he said he could not estimate a time of arrival at The Vatican. I found this odd as they do these tours daily. Thanks in advance.

  9. Our cruise ship docks in Civitavecchia at 6:00 AM on Wednesday October 26 and departs at 7:00 PM. Has anyone with a similar schedule made it to the Wednesday morning Papal Audience? If so, how did you get there in time?

Ideally we want to see the Papal Audience, tour St. Peter's Basilica and see the Vatican Museum. My wife uses a cane and has trouble with steps and walking any distance so our transportation choices are limited.

All input is appreciated. Thank you.

I'm surprised nobody has answered this question yet

I'm in Rome on 10.5.16 from the EPIC and I'm interested in seeing the the Pope as well. Anyone?

    Thanks in advance.

  10. I am following closely too. I booked almost 600 days out to get an aft mini, and we sail in less than 2 weeks.

I will not be happy if there is a problem, and I will be working my way up the chain if there is.

Make sure to collect the business cards of all those you speak with about the smelly problems you may encounter. It will help when you file a complaint post cruise.

  11. I was on the Sun post dry dock May 8-16, 2016 in cabin 9072 aft/port side. The smell was very prominent both inside my cabin and in the hallways. This sewage smell does not come from the bathroom or drain. It comes out of the air vents., your air conditioning. Staff is well aware of the on-going problem. They will send housekeeping to spray a godawful powder to "freshen" the room. For people like me with severe allergies, it's a nightmare. I left my balcony door open, even at night, to get pure, clean Alaskan air into the cabin. We were not offered any cabin exchange either.. only a bottle of wine and chocolate covered strawberries. Do I really want to eat in a cabin that smells of poop? Nope. Buyer beware of booking Aft area cabins until you ate guaranteed that this long term problem has been properly addressed.

On the "Sun Drydock" thread there is a great explanation of house this sewage smell problem is in the pipes and what needs to be done to fix it. If I find the post, I'll put it here. Best to you all Sun sailors.

  12. Mods...what's it going to take to get one sticky thread for this upsell nonsense. This works on other boards I visit like Flyertalk and eliminates this noise with some active moderation to merge new threads into the stickied thread.

Also, every time one of your posts this type of inquiry you increase the demand for upsells. I don't think these are a big secret, but a daily post will make them go up significantly in value. The only thing worse than these posts are the people who say they call every single day to upsell line...get a life.

Thank you^^^ all this talk about UPSELL and people freely distributing the number is ridiculous. Don't get me started on those who say they call daily.

I don't follow or read the threads for other cruise lines because I've been a dedicated NCL enthusiast for 6 years but I'm curious if there is as much talk about UPSELLS as there is here?

Don't get me wrong... I've been in a Haven Penthouse on the GETAWAY. When I got the EMAIL FROM NCL I was giddy and excited for the opportunity and I took the offer. I just would never imagine that it's a right to get to the HAVEN by booking insides and then trying to score a discount to the top. BTW I was booked in an AFT BALCONY and gave it up to upgrade to the HAVEN. I'm booked in an aft balcony on the Breakaway for Nov. 2016. I'll hope to get an offer from them to upgrade but I won't bug the crap out of them daily for 30 days prior to the sailing to get one. Rant over.

  13. Please tell us more. We have an Alaskan cruise booked on the Sun and after reading recent reviews, I am beginning to wish I had chosen another ship. I don't handle stinky overflowing toilets very well and it seems they are unable to fix this problem.

I was on the May 8-16, 2016 post dry dock sailing on the Sun.

The sewage smell was ripe on port days. I was in 9072 aft/port and had the awful smell in my cabin as well as in the aft hallways. This problem has been ongoing. I don't think the smell is from overflowing toilets. My cabin was always clean with great water pressure and no toilet issues. The smell comes from the air vents.

  14. I'm eager to hear from any of the Sun's Alaska passengers from the past few weeks. (I depart next Monday.) Comments? Warnings? Dare I hope the sewage smell I've heard about has decreased?

On a brighter and morepositive note if you like to shop, the best place I found on my cruise was in Ketchican at THE OUTLET STORE. It's right across from the pier, you can see it from the ship. Great prices. Look for the coupon nook at the entrance to the stores for better deals and a few freebies. I collect magnets and this place had the best selection and prices. 52dca696cd28bc93fe3d0517a563ce0f.jpg

Hold your breath in the aft.. it still smells like sewage, especially on port days. I was on the May 8-16 SUN post drydock.

My cabin was 9072 port/aft and I reported the smell for several days. There is nothing staff can do except send housekeeping to spray some awful smelling baby powder stuff to try and mask the odor. For me, with allergies, it made things worse. I slept with the balcony door open for 4 nights in a row. We were blessed with gorgeous weather so leaving the door open was refreshing. I received an apology from the front desk in the form of chocolate covered stawberries. No cabin credit was offered. I can not attest to how it smelled elsewhere.
