I almost forgot our other oddity.  PLUTO!!  This was my daughter's favorite stuffed animal when she was 2 years old and she carries it with her on all of her travels even today.  Pluto has been to four continents and countless countries.  We even made up a dog tag for him in case he is ever lost or misplaced.  Here he is at Olympia:

    I approve wholeheartedly! 😍

Car rental was a steal at $55 USD plus $8 bucks worth of gas.

Thanks for your comments...sounds like you had a fabulous day!

May I ask how you found that car rental rate?  For our visit in three weeks I've found $270 for Avis near the port, $170 for Juneau Car Rental near the airport, and $180 for a Turo rental downtown...still better for us (family of 5) than the Blue Bus, but $55 would be a lot better!

  3. Can anyone comment on parking at Mendenhall?  We are planning to pick up our car at 8am and head straight there, but from the google satellite view the parking lot looks tiny!  At 8:30 on a Sunday we should be OK, right?  Thanks for any reassurance you can provide!  🙂

  4. world_traveler, we will be sadly disembarking with you that same day, and heading to YVR for a 12:55 flight.  We're planning to take the Skytrain.  On the West Coast Departures board, there are a few very helpful Vancouver residents who have spelled out exactly how to do it; you might want to check there

  5. We have two cabins booked for our upcoming cruise on the Sapphire Princess, one for hubby and me and the other for our three kids (two young adults and a 15-year-old).  The kids' cabin was booked under a "third passenger free" promotion, and passengers 1 and 2 have the Plus package.  We are paid in full.

Good news/bad news, passenger 2 is starting a new job 😃 and will (almost certainly) not be able to join us :classic_sad:.  I asked my TA whether we should cancel her as soon as we know for certain, or simply have her not show up to board.  TA says he spoke to Princess and they've advised that if she is a no-show, passenger 3 will automatically fall into the second passenger position in order to receive the Princess Plus perks, and taxes for the third passenger would be refunded at the end of the voyage.  Since I've read here that Princess phone reps are not always consistent and/or correct...does this sound right to you?  It seems like it should be, but I wanted to sanity check with the experts.  I'm a planner and don't like the thought of leaving it to the last minute as we're boarding to go through the explanation.  Thanks!

Per All Trails it's 7.6 mi round trip with a gain of 3700', some of that is at 38 degrees, and takes 6-7 hours. But  that's round trip, if you took the tram down it'll cut your time but not in half. Uphill is a killer for me cardio wise  but downhill is a  killer on my knees lol. If  you do it  let us know!

Thanks for those details!  I'm not familiar with All Trails; I'll have to check that out.

I'm not sure that we want to devote that much of our time in Juneau to a hike...hmm...🤔

Depending on your ability, you can hike to the top of Mt Roberts (free tram down!)

Thank you for this suggestion; I was wondering if this was possible.  This is what we did in Bergen, Norway, and it was perfect for us.  Does anyone have any idea if the hike up is comparable? 🤔

They also had what they called Tiramisu.  It comes in a small jar and was really bad.  We could not eat it.

    The pizza was fantastic!!!  🍕

Thanks for the warning!  We love tiramisu and would order it in a heartbeat...we'll probably still give it a try but now we know to temper our expectations 😃 Looking forward to the pizza anyway!

Triple ditto:  Sapphire - get an aft covered balcony and you have it all, especially an aft suite.  If you get a suite you also get Thermal Suite included, this ship has one of the best TS of all Grand class ships (the Grand has no Thermal Suite).  The Sapphire also has a wide promenade deck.

So excited to have booked the Sapphire for our Alaskan adventure!

Can you tell me what the Sapphire's Thermal Suite includes?  No aft suite for us, but I'm considering booking the week-long Thermal Suite pass if it's a nice facility.  Thanks.

  10. I'm pondering the same question for our upcoming cruise on the Sapphire Princess to Alaska in June.  I'm having a difficult time finding out exactly what the Thermal Suite comprises, and whether the Sapphire has free sauna and steam room as mentioned by wallyj.  Does anyone have insight on the Sapphire specifically?  Thanks.
