  1. According to Celebrity there are two purposes to the MoveUp program.

One is to increase revenue, which is fairly straightforward.

The other is to allow people to experience a higher level cabin than they normally book.  They’ve found that after experiencing the higher level cabin 20% of the people start booking that level.

Not knowing how this is factored in makes the whole process less straightforward for those of us trying to figure out how it works.

The last I recall from discussion on here, was that you paid your $14.99 medallion room service charge and provided you used the app and not the phone, delivery would be free.
However we received an email from Princess which seems to say differently.

Can anyone confirm definitively, if each delivery does indeed incur a $5 charge?

Funny how cruise lines, airlines, hotels, etc. use the term “nominal fee”, which is supposed to mean that it’s so small it’s a fee in name only, to gouge their customers.

There is coral out there.  I've been snorkeling out there while on a Zodiak tour of the NaPali area (totally sea-sickness inducing, so I can't recommend it to anyone who gets motion sick).  It's gorgeous, it's pristine, and I've never seen a large ship there (let alone one so close to the coast).  The whole thing makes me uncomfortable because I don't want to sail with a cruise line that isn't conscious of the rules regarding something like this (and yes, I am speculating, but it certainly seems like they should not have been there).

NCL has recently discontinued it, but Pride of America has been cruising the Na Pali coast every week for years. It was one of the highlights of the cruise.

I also have paid for lunch on board on port days but choose to eat at restaurants on land. So I guess I am paying twice for lunch

Yes, you are. Which doesn’t mean you shouldn’t, either on shore or at a specialty restaurant, but it is something to take into consideration.

Under that reasoning you should eat about 5 meals a day. Since you have already paid for burger grill, pizza slices, buffet and MDR. It reminds me of the people that say   “ you can eat all you want “. While they run you down with their scooter. The same logic says why should I pay tips for people doing their jobs

I could eat five meals a day, but it might interfere with making sure I get all fifteen alcoholic drinks in. You have to have priorities. 😉

Regardless, I’m just saying that you might also think about the opportunity cost of not eating in the MDR when deciding whether to pay for a meal at a specialty restaurant.

It's amazing that this is even a debate.

How can it be the "same food" if the menu items found on the SD menus are not available in the MDR?

I find it remarkable that at home, folks will go out to dinner and drop $50 to $100 pp without thinking twice, but the SD up-charge on a ship warrants all this consternation and hand wringing using subjective terms like "worth it" in the process.

Speciality Dining food is better, the preparation is made to order, the service better, the menu unique, the ambience different.

If one is on a tight budget, then it might not be "worth it" -- those who are making it rain don't give the money a second thought. Maybe it's a matter of YOLO versus FOMO. I tend to rock the former.

It’s more like dropping $50 to go to Outback when you’ve already paid for a meal at Applebee's.

A CPAP is considered a medical device and can be carried on a bus. The problem will be…where to store it.  Some busses will have overhead compartments. Others may not.

I purchased a chamber block so that I could use my CPAP without the water chamber/water.  If you are coming off a cruise, you could bring the left over distilled water with you.  I would transfer it to a water tight container.

We were able to get distilled water at all of the Princess Lodges we stayed at. If I remember right it came in glasses with Saran Wrap over the top.

I booked a GTY concierge class cabin, then wanted to pay extra and move to another non-GTY cabin.  GTY was the only cabin class available!  My cabin was not assigned yet.  The supervisor tried for 30 minutes to make the change with my TA, but it would not allow me to move.  There is no reason why this should happen, but for some unknown reason it did.  You should be able to change suites in the same category, or pay to move to a different category at the prevailing price.  I will not ever book a GTY gain due to my personal experience.  You have always been able to stay in the same category and make a change, so this “should not” be an issue.

I’m not quite clear, if your cabin wasn’t yet assigned why did you want to move? And if GTY was the only class available what non-GTY cabin were you expecting to move to?

  9. It seems unlikely that the ten minutes would make a difference in your ability to make your flight.  I was able to book it without having entered any flight information, hopefully that won’t cause problems later. I just figured that if i wasn’t using Princess Air, flight time wouldn’t matter to them.

The wording in the tour description is a little funny, though, I’m not sure what they’re trying to say.

Passengers with Princess Air should book a customized air flight ticket to be sure they can participate on a tour the day of disembarkation. Passengers without a customized air flight may not be booked on a flight which will permit them to participate on a tour on the day of disembarkation.

Not sure I follow. The OP is referring to MoveUp availability, not GTY assignments.

If a lot of Retreat cabins were sold as GTY, and the actual rooms were not yet assigned, it would look like a lot of availability for MoveUp’s because the rooms appeared unsold, when in fact there was not much availability.

    Don’t forget I need 2 cabins.

I imagine there are similar cruises with a $10,000 per cabin difference, but I’ve never seen one, and I think it’s more the exception than the rule.

Of course, unlike with you, we’re pretty flexible and I compare the best pricing I can find with the best pricing I can find.

I’m still confused.  Say you have a Venetian number and you are going to cruise on Celebrity. What level would you be? What would it get you!

I don’t think they’ve announced it, but Silversea’s first level over its initial level is 100 days. That would put it in the D/D+, E/E+ area.

Glad you had a great time. I really wanted to do SS Japan next year but the timing doesn’t work out with the kids school schedule so went with celebrity as they go in July and SS doesn’t.  The one good thing is it’s well over $20k less so that helps.

That’s quite a big difference, I’ve never found it that large when comparing suite to suite and remember that the SS price is out the door, so to speak. No adding of taxes, port fees, gratuities. Also, you have to compare to the SS port to port pricing or else add airfare, etc. to the Celebrity price.

interesting post.. I wondered where the misnomer " virtual veranda" came from as to Celebrity..

We like to call it a "garden room".. like a closed in porch with optional window!  Put a few fake orchids/ plants in there and it  could be a nice sun room

I think the OP made it up.

You specifically said that Princess Platinum insurance is NOT a “cancel for any reason” plan. It is. It works basically for anyone who cancels for anything other than covered medical issues.  It is a 100% refund in FCC, not cash.

Yes, I neglected to mention I was talking about getting a refund. Mea Culpa.

  16. 3 minutes ago, Lady Arwen said:

This is not correct.  We recently had to cancel our cruise because of an emergency surgery for our dog.  We had Platinum coverage.  The cancel for any reason benefit does not refund you in cash, but in FCC, which were available immediately to us.  Two days later we used the credits to book another cruise.

I’m glad that worked out for you, but it’s not the same as getting a refund, and doesn’t work out for everyone.
