The vast majority of container ships are not self-unloading, meaning they have no cranes onboard, and rely on shore cranes to load/unload.  Haven't seen too many container cranes around passenger terminals.

Seen anything like this around passenger terminals?:

When you're on a cruise ship at Cape Liberty, you can see a bunch of cranes just to the north of the passenger terminal.

    Hello,

I am cruising on August 19 and weigh 330 pounds. I see that the water slides have a ridiculous weight limit of 300 for one rider, but 450 for two? How does that even make sense? I want to have a good time and be able to experience everything on my cruise.

Do they actually weigh you before you get on the slides?

Please let me know, because this is disheartening at the current moment.

So, if someone weighed 400 pounds, they would not be allowed.  But if they carried a 30 or 40 pound infant, that would be OK? maybe I'm not understand the issue here.

  3. Baltimore cruise port parking is generally easy and convenient.  But I've only been there when there were two ships home ported (which is almost all the time).  In December, a third ship will be using the port.  So, parking may not be as easy.  Check out the boards in September when a third ship will be there to see what is different and how it is going..

Also, when coming from the north, you need to use the right tube of the Fort McHenry tunnel as the exit is soon after you come out of the tunnel.

  4. Don't go with CVS.  I signed up my 94-year-old mother in law for the vaccine shot in July.  Long story as to getting the first shot as she is not in the best shape.  CVS had the first shot and we got that one and the second shot was scheduled for a few days ago.  We got the on-line confirmation for the second shot to go and we confirmed.  But when we went to CVS, there was no shot to give her.  They had run out of supply.

  5. If the CDC limits cruises to seven days or less, Viking will have to do something different in America.

The seven-day cruise starts in Tampa, making Panama City its second stop. From there, it goes to Mobile, Alabama; Key West; Nassau, Bahamas; then back to Tampa.

The Viking Star ship will stop for about six hours, arriving about noon each Tuesday. The 930 passengers and 465 crew members ship will anchor in St. Andrew Bay where tenders will meet to transport guests to local attractions.

I voted for November, but I’m not sure why......

I voted November as well.  With the election November 3rd, there's no way they want cruising to start before the election and then have to stop for some outbreaks.  So, my guess is that they'll announce that cruising can start again in November (mostly short trips out of swing state Florida) to try to get more Florida votes.

CDC:  Current smoking has declined from 20.9% (nearly 21 of every 100 adults) in 2005 to 13.7% (nearly 14 of every 100 adults) in 2018,

Current cigarette smoking was highest among people aged 25–44 years and 45–64 years. Current cigarette smoking was lowest among people aged 18-24 years.

    • Nearly 8 of every 100 adults aged 18–24 years (7.8%)
    • Nearly 17 of every 100 adults aged 25–44 years (16.5%)
    • About 16 of every 100 adults aged 45–64 years (16.3%)
    • About 8 of every 100 adults aged 65 years and older (8.4%)

*Current smokers are defined as people who reported smoking at least 100 cigarettes during their lifetime and who, at the time they participated in a survey about this topic, reported smoking every day or some days.

The numbers of current smokers above include people who only smoke on some days (but not every day) as long as they've smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime.  This is basically anyone who has ever smoked and hasn't completely quit.  The heavy smoker numbers are probably a lot less.

  8. Here's an article explaining the issues regarding dreading the Vittorio Emanuele III channel.

    https://www.theartnewspaper.com/analysis/where-does-cruise-ship-crash-leave-venice

Luigi Brugnaro, the mayor of Venice, and Luca Zaia, the president of the Veneto region, both support an alternative route for the cruise ships to enter the port of Venice, which is via the disused Vittorio Emanuele III channel. There is no doubt that this incident reinforces their position. “It is no longer conceivable that big ships sail down the Giudecca canal. We ask for the immediate opening of the Vittorio Emanuele”, tweeted Brugnaro.

In November 2017, the previous government announced a solution to the problem of how to bring cruise ships to the port in Venice without sailing through the city. They would enter through the southernmost opening from the sea into the lagoon and sail down the Malamocco channel. Those above 96,000 tonnes would moor at the industrial port of Marghera on the inside shore of the lagoon, and passengers would be brought into Venice by ferries, 300 at a time. Medium-sized ships (tonnage undefined) would also go down the Malamocco channel, but then turn right down the Vittorio Emanuele III channel to get to the port in Venice.

For this to happen, the Vittorio Emanuele III will need to be dredged from its existing depth of six metres to nine metres, while the Malamocco-Marghera channel will have to be widened to accommodate the 1000 or so extra sailings, because industrial and cruise traffic will be competing for space.

This will be very damaging to the lagoon, accelerating the flushing of sediment from the lagoon bed into the Adriatic sea with every low tide, and eroding the sandbanks and mudflats that reduce the impact of exceptional flooding events.

I am going on a cruise on either the Allure or Oasis of the Sea next year. This will be my first cruise with Royal Caribbean. I am wondering what the quality of the buffet will be like when compared to a buffet on the Vegas strip. Are we looking at a buffet similar to Wynn/Cosmo/Aria, or something along the lines of a Paris/Luxor/MandalayBay?

More along the lines of the Mirage buffet.

Supposed to be onboard Thursday for NE/Canada. Between this propulsion problem and Dorian I don’t even know whether to pack or not! Even if they get the ship fixed we may be cancelled or rerouted. The waiting and the unknown are the worst. Can’t wait to get some answers!!

Some of the projections have Dorian near the mouth of the Chesapeake late Thursday into early Friday.  I could see them truncating the next sailing from a 9-night leaving Thursday to a 7-night leaving Saturday to avoid Dorian.  That's if the repairs are done by then.

I would appreciate any opinions or reviews regarding the Hampton Inn Times Square Central, including location. We are considering this hotel for a pre-cruise stay. We will be going to a couple of Broadway shows, visiting the Time square area, and touring Central Park.  We are still considering the other things we may want to do.  Thanks.

We stayed there last year when we went to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.  It's an easy walk from Penn Station and a convenient location to many shows.  The interiors are nice and clean, but nothing special.  The breakfast area gets very crowded.  They have signs up warning you of this.  Expect to take your breakfast back up to your room if you are not down there early.  There's also an open balcony area on one of the higher floor of the building if you want to have a look around town.

You are also leaving a lot of $$ on the table. Amazon Prime Visa gives me 5% on Amazon purchases, 2% on gas, pharmacy and restaurants, and 1% on everything else.

How is that better than citi double cash card (except for amazon purchases)?

If you are a member of Costco, get the credit card for no additional fee, and you get 3% back on travel.

“Cruise ships must not sail down the Giudecca,” Italy's Environment Minister Sergio Costa tweeted after last month's incident. “We have been working on moving them for months now... and are nearing a solution.” .

    Any ideas on the solution?

I don‘t understand why they are not docking one ship in Manhattan and shuttle people back and force.

Manhattan isn't really feasible as others have said.  But does anyone know if they can still dock a second ship further west in Cape Liberty (see the photo on their website).  Shuttling that far would be similar to the old days at Cape Liberty.
