  1. I have used Global Entry for 7+ years. It includes Pre-check and if you have certain types of credit cards the fee is reimbursed directly. I would NOT travel without Global Entry. It has saved me hours when checking in and hours when returning back to the USA.

  2. Hi all,

I'd appreciate any advice/reassurance because right now I'm pretty bummed. Our 10th anniversary is next week and we're booked on the Holland America Nieuw Amsterdam eastern European cruise departing Fort Lauderdale. We originally were supposed to go to San Juan, St. Thomas, Grand Turk and Half Moon Cay.

Obviously, the hurricanes change that but we didn't cancel because we've been through hurricanes personally and wanted to support the islands. Then the itinerary totally changed and we were to go to St. Croix, Cap Cana and Nassau, as well as Half Moon Cay. We decided to roll with it - St. Croix seemed like an equal swap and Cap Cana interesting. Well, now we're not going to St. Croix, we're going to Amber Cove - another Carnival island.

I understand that in comparison to what the hurricane-ravaged islands are going through this is minor but this is also the only trip my husband and I have taken together in 10 years and a splurge for us. Had we wanted to visit the Bahamas and two Carnival islands, we could have done so for a third of the price. I know options are limited but I can't help being really disappointed.

Can a more experienced cruiser weigh in on these ports and maybe help me get excited again. Right now I just want to cry.

    Hello!

I am a very positive person. I am also honest. I think that your expectations will not be met on this new itinerary. If you can get your money back you should do so. Or wait a few more months for the islands to get back on their feet. I am from Puerto Rico and I have visited about 90% of The Caribbean islands on land tours, personal trips, and chartered boats. Your replacement ports are nothing like the original trip.

Even if you do decide to go. Please have a wonderful time.

  3. BCN Boarding on Royal there is a duty free shop AFTER security and check-in. You should be able to buy as many bottles as you want and take on board. Just make you can do this by going through once. If there is no additional scanner then bring a bag go down the same stairs and buy some other bottles.

  4. Good morning from Boston!

I work about 1 mile from the Black Falcon terminal. I also drive in to work every day.

Just an FYI to all that plan on taking any Uber's, Taxi, Trolleys, HOHO buses. Traffic is absolutely horrendous in the city between 7am-10am and 3pm-7pm. If you visited this past month note people were on vacation. Now all higher ed schools are back in and everyone is back from vacation. Expect a long wait in a bus going from the Black Falcon to anywhere touristy. If you can walk or take the T then those are your best options.

Enjoy the city and good luck to all!

  5. We are booked on the AOS leaving San Juan 3/31 to 4/7. We were on AOS in 2015, and are looking forward to this different itinerary (ABC's plus St. Martin). However, I've been checking airfares since I booked in May 2017, before flights were even available, and you have got to be kidding me with the prices from NYC to SJ. I can't get a flight under $650 (and I need 4). Friggin Jet Blue is like 1500 per ticket! We've been to SJ many times in the past, and the average airfare was $350. I just can't justify spending 3k in airfare (yes, we have some miles, so one, maybe two of the flights would be free - the only up side to my wife's credit card spending habits) just to get to SJ.

I keep checking, and trying different options (Stewart, even Philly). Southwest's return date only extends to 4/6, and I need 4/7, so maybe that will work. Sigh...

    Hi-

I fly Boston to PR all the time. Th cheapest I have found has been $450 per person direct. That was last year. I just paid $512 with a stop in Philly last week. I know how you feel. I have a price watch on a few tickets for the week before thanksgiving and the week after. Prices have been $650 for 4 months with no change.

  6. Hello to all visitors and future visitors!

I work in Boston specifically in the Seaport area where the ships dock. Please be mindful of Seaport Area Traffic. It's atrocious. It does not matter if you take Uber, Lift, Cab, trolley, or bus. Between 8am-10am and 2pm-7pm expect to be in heavy very delayed traffic in the vicinity.

Other than that enjoy your visit.

  7. Cruises fro Seattle don't go to Seward one way. Seattle to seward is against American Law. My preference would be . Fly to Anchorage and take a the cruise lines land tour. (Alaska is an expensive place especially in tourist season.)

Cruise to Vancouver on the line of your choice. Keep in mind that some cruise lines use Whittier instead of Seward.

    Fixed. My bad.

  8. Good morning-

IMPO- Cruising to Alaska on a smaller ship is best. Alaska itself is the destination. With less people on board you can embark and disembark faster at each stop. This means more time to explore. Some tips from experience.

•Select a ship that has a lot of glass in it's lounges. That way you are always looking at the scenery. There is less than 4-5 hours of night during summer months. We found ourselves hiking on the Iditarod @1am.

•IMO - One way from Vancouver is the best way to get up to Seward and really see Alaska.

    • Adding a land tour is ideal.

•Some ports you will have to go past the tourist shops to get to the real Alaska. Talk to locals and forest rangers. They have the real scoop.

•Go for a hike and get away from the crowds. That is where you will find animals in their environment.

•Take a kayak into the bays. We saw large variety of fish and other sea life.

    Have fun!

  9. I have done RCCL, X, Norwegian, and Carnival. The most civilized trip I have been on was X. Absolutely perfect service. Ship was in excellent condition and food was very good. They run a special that does include alcohol and specialty coffee once in a while.

Carnival and NCL, to me, are similar. NCL nickeled and dimmed us too much. They asked us to pay for things that are included in the other lines in the base price.

I prefer RCCL. After many trips on several ships their product is very consistent. We rarely leave the ship with a bill that is over $150. Everything that is of interest to me is already included.

I would suggest going to the big 5 websites and comparing what's included, what's not, and overall costs. Make sure you include flights, tips, and taxes.

  10. I love my lanyard. About 7 years back for the holidays I bought all my female family members that cruise a designer label lanyard made out of leather and fabric. To this day those ladies use the item on the ship and at their work. The one we have can carry the ship card, a CC, and several bills all without others seeing this "other stuff". When in port I slip it under my shirt or jacket and my money and ID are safely attached to me.

I love the lanyard. Lanyard Power!

  11. Thank you all so much for the insight and personal experience recommendations. We are looking a 14 day Viking trip with my MIL and FIL and my parents. I think that if there is a small group of us we can make our own excitement if things do become dull. By all your advice it sounds like it might not be dull and we will have a great time.

  12. Chippet-

We just got of Breakaway a month ago. I am not disabled but I am architect/designer and I thought the corridors all over the ship were very tight on Breakaway. The stateroom Corridors are so tight two grown men can not walk side by side.

I have been in both the Radiance and Serenade and I find those ships much more spacious. My sister and her two kids travelled in an accesible deck 2 ocean view stateroom and it was wonderful. The turning radius' in the room and shower room were impressive.

Also Radiance and serenade are both smaller ships and people can get on and off much faster. A good friend recently took a larger ship to St. Petersburg and she complained that the ship was so large it took forever to embark in disembark at each port she said that if she ever went back she would take a smaller ship.

  13. No Smoking and the 15 year old can stay until 11pm. That is how it was last week on Breakaway. I know a few parents let their slightly older kids stay but that is at their own discretion. Most of the show after 11pm was not too R rated but there was a lot of swearing.
