  1. Thank you for today’s FR & D, Rich! Another spectacular morning here. The morning marine layer really enhanced the sunrise. Bindi & I had an extra long walk. Lots of deer out & about. The fawns are getting big! Vanessa, thank you for keeping up with all of us. Hope BFF is managing. Love to read about your progress. Gym, Bindi walks, chores & pool time. My turn to host dinner Saturday, so I am working on the menu. Has anyone air fried salmon? I have a couple of recipes that sound interesting, but I don’t want the salmon to be dry. Prayers for all who need our support. @grapau27 Graham sorry to read that you & Pauline haven’t been well. Hope you both recover quickly. Cheers to all who are celebrating! May we each find a reason to smile today. ********** Domaine Delaporte 2020 La Côte d'Amigny Sauvignon Blanc (Sancerre) This Sancerre sounds delightful. Perfect for a hot Summer evening. Lots of consumer fans. Widely available. Online prices start at $29.97. Winemaker Notes Pale gold with green hints. Very expressive, intense, and complex nose with boxwood, rhubarb, blackcurrant, kiwi fragrances, and light vegetal touch (marigold). The entry is soft and round—bright freshness on the palate, delicate and lively purity. Well balanced and harmonious, it ends with a clean lingering finish. As a young wine, it is a superb aperitif served at 10°C and a marvelous companion for shellfish. After a few months of maturation, it becomes excellent with Asian dishes, fish dishes, sushi, grilled, or fish with a sauce. Also very good with roasted white meats and poultry. This wine should be served between 10 and 13°C (50-55°F). 90Wine Enthusiast Smooth and ripe, this wine balances yellow fruits with red apples, supplemented by the tangy acidity of a young wine. The edgy aftertaste will soften well. Drink from 2023.
  2. If one can trust the info on Vivino - and at least 95% of the time, I find I can trust their info… the blend is Syrah, Merlot, Sangiovese & Zinfandel.
  3. Wow! I spent my formative years in North Andover. And lots of Summers at Stevens Pond.
  4. Thank you for today’s FR & D, Rich! It is a lovely start to this day of remembrance. Our strong ocean breezes have made the heat of the last few days bearable. Hope they continue. Vanessa, thank you for keeping up with all of us. Hope BFF heals quickly. You are definitely on the right track. Gym, a Memorial Day ceremony at my community’s club house, Bindi walks, & dinner at another friend’s. I might be able to squeeze in some pool time. Prayers for all who need our support. Safe travels for you & Jim, Terri. Cheers to all who are celebrating. May we each find a reason to smile today. ************ Yjar 2019 (750ML) This Tempranillo-based blend from Spain sounds lovely, but it is outside of my budget. Maybe just a taste. A decent number of distributors. Online prices start at $119.95. Reviews Jane Anson: 100 Points I tasted this at the property from barrel thrilled to follow it now in bottle. Grabs you from the first moments with its sage thyme dried flowers and incense aromatics clings to your nostrils drawing you in so much depth of flavour to the vivid raspberry and sour cherry fruits delicate and yet powerful. Hard to describe how little artifice is conveyed in the glass it's not a wine that is coated in new oak instead it is delicate poised crafted utterly gorgeous so moreish. Harvest October 6 to 18 3.8ha old gobelet vines with any replacements coming from massal selction. Iconic winemaking partnership Telmo Rodriguez and Pablo Eguzkiza. I hope everyone folllowed my advice from the first vintage to get on board because it is more than living up to its potential and its tiny quatities means that first come are almost certainly first served. Decanter: 98 Points The third vintage by oenologist-winemakers Telmo Rodriguez and Pablo Eguzkiza the 3.8-hectare single-vineyard cuvée from the limestone foothills of the Sierra de Toloño in Rioja Alavesa is made from a massal selection of Tempranillo Graciano Garnacha Granegro and Rojal. A lovely bright pink-red colour in the glass. Supple and succulent smooth and round such a lifeforce on show a step up slightly from last year - clearly so energetic forward and sleek. This is defined and powerful no doubt this is packing a punch in terms of intensity this year focussed and spiced the heat and oak come through strongly but it manages to stay the righ Wine Advocate: 97 Points The 2019 Yjar is the third vintage of their top-of-the-range wine designed for the international market and sold through the négociant system of Bordeaux. It was produced with a blend of Tempranillo Garnacha Graciano and other grapes from 3.8 hectares of selected plots from the Remelluri vineyards cropped from a challenging year with frost. This feels young but already very Rioja marked by the Garnacha which could represent around 30% of the bottled blend. It's tense and has abundant but fine-grained tannins a little Italian in style. They kept a lower alcoholic degree in 2019 a moderate 14% and the wine comes through as very elegant. This has to be my favorite vintage of Yjar. It spent 30 months in barrels of different sizes and foudres. 9049 bottles were filled in June 2022. I tasted the Yjar bottling (which is sold through the négociant system of Bordeaux) with the rest of Telmo Rodríguez's portfolio but I have included the note here again for context and completeness of the wines sold through La Place de Bordeaux in September 2023. There is a big change in the range of Lindes the wines produced with grapes from external local grape growers from the neighboring villages. They have bottled six different wines from 2020 selecting grapes from six different villages. In 2020 they had two episodes of hail and they had to sort select and discard and they also bought grapes from different growers including Marqués de Legarda from Ábalos. It was a learning exercise to understand the character of each of the villages in a journey that continues in 2021 and 2022 trying to enhance the differences between the villages with a simpler enology. There's also a Grandes Lindes a very special bottling from a truly exceptional vineyard. It might be a collection that grows in the future if they find more exceptional vineyards. This project has been ongoing since 2011 but they never released any of the wines until today with a wine from San Vicente de la Sonsierra from 2019 but they still have all previous vintages around 2000 bottles each year in their cellar. As for the classical Remelluri wines they are changing the concept; the new wines will come from the 2020 harvest and they have reduced quantities tremendously. They probably did less than 200000 kilos of grapes in 2020 when they had done 400000 kilos in the past... So I only tasted the white from 2020; the Yjar sold at La Place de Bordeaux in September 2023 and the classical reds will come in the future. Published: Aug 31 2023
  5. I never really thought about them until one swam about 4 feet off the side of my kayak on the Intercoastal. That one got my full attention. 😎
  6. Thank you for today’s FR & D, Rich! Another lovely day here. Last night’s dinner at a friend’s was so much fun. Way too much food & my Tiramisu was a hit. Vanessa, thank you for keeping up with us all! Glad your HVAC got fixed. I am so happy that your surgery has given you your quality of life back! Gym, Bindi walks, Aldi, a visit with my Sister & Brayden and pool time! Prayers for all who need our support. Cheers to all who are celebrating! May we each find a reason to smile today! ************* Kendall-Jackson Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay 2020 I used the 2020 vintage, because I found the best info for it. But you can find the 2022 vintage almost everywhere & prices start at $5.98! Online prices for the 2020 vintage start at $15.98. Distributor notes Wine Enthusiast: "Concentrated and creamy but not overly showy, this wine is balanced, restrained and layered. It meshes an apple-tart flavor with subtle vanilla and nutmeg nuances while underlying acidity achieves excellent balance." Winery: "America's #1 selling Chardonnay for 26 years and counting! It's no wonder Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay is our most popular release. Grown in California’s cool coastal vineyards. Monterey County provides citrus and lime flavors. Santa Barbara County imparts mango and pineapple flavors. Mendocino County imparts green apple notes. Sonoma County adds ripe pear flavors. Exceptionally food-friendly!"
  7. Thank you for today’s FR & D, Rich! Another lovely start to the day. Yesterday was another perfect day. I am spoiled! Officially. Vanessa, thank you for keeping up with all of our happenings. I love that you captured Gerry’s alternate birthday! Hope BFF is doing ok & that you are, too! I still marvel that BFF’s injury happened just when you were able to drive again! Zumba, Bindi walks, yard work and then dinner at a friend’s. I am bringing Tiramisu and wine. Prayers for all who need our support. Jacqui, I hope you don’t overdo things and your foot gets better soon. Cheers to all who are celebrating! Happy Alternate Birthday, Gerry! May we each find a reason to smile today. ************ Fournier Père et Fils 2022 Les Monts Damnés Sauvignon Blanc (Sancerre) Another elusive European wine. But if you happen to live in, or are visiting France or one of its neighbors, you might be able to enjoy it. Online European prices start at $43.78. Wine Enthusiast 93 Chalky minerality leaps out on the nose of this Sancerre followed by green plum, green apple and lime citrus. On the palate the wine is steely in texture with wet stone and hints of white peach on the long finish. This Sancerre would pair wonderfully with mussels, clams, scallops and crustaceans of any sort.
  8. Marlene First Bindi is ok. Those weird levels were a result of faulty on-site lab equipment. The offsite lab ran two tests to be certain, since the results were so very different. I can not believe any one remembers that picture. And even more bizarre that I still have it. I did repurpose the tiara for a friend’s milestone birthday, but I have been told another is in my future. 😎
  9. Thank you for today’s FR & D, Rich! Another lovely day here. Yesterday was just perfect with the strong breezes. Hope today is just as lovely! Vanessa, thank you for taking care of yourself and still finding a way to help BFF and keep our lists. An amazing role model! Bind’s trip to the vet yesterday was a bit alarming. We have been monitoring her kidney function and she has been on a special food for a year. Yesterday’s blood work showed her kidney level as normal, but her white blood cell count so low it indicates either a severe infection or a tumor. They took another blood sample and sent it to an outside lab for confirmation. It could just mean their equipment has an issue, but I won’t know until they call. Gym, Bindi walks, chores, Tiramisu making and pool time. And maybe a trip to the vet to pick up antibiotics. This one fits right in with all of us who appreciate HAL’s elevator mats! Prayers for all who need them. Roy, hoping that the tests your doctor wants to run show no major issue. Cheers to all who are celebrating! May we all find a reason to smile today! ************ Ratti 2019 Serradenari Nebbiolo (Barolo) Well we have broken the string of SB with a heck of a bang. Fairly easy to find but very pricey - for me anyway. Online prices start at $139.00. Winemaker Notes Garnet red color with aromas of plums, violet and tobacco. Full-flavored with good tannin levels and acidity. A great wine for important dishes, red meats roasted on a spit or grilled, game, and ripe cheeses. 97Wine Enthusiast This wine expresses itself with aromas of wild cherries, tart red plums, dried violets and oolong tea leaves. The palate is elegant and almost dances across the mouth, leading with ripe red fruits that give way to savory flavors of fresh bay leaf, clove and balsam. Drink 2025–2040. 95Robert Parker's Wine Advocate Here's an exciting new submission from the house of Ratti. Serradenari is a large MGA and one of only a few cru sites that exist on the western slope under the village of La Morra. The 2019 Barolo Serradenari has a more botanical-smelling bouquet, and by that I mean that it has lavender bud, thyme, aniseed and the kinds of flowers and herbs that you might find in a fragrant garden. It is nuanced and delicate and framed by a light note of ash or crushed limestone. It finishes quite firm or edgy. Only 6,000 bottles were made. 94James Suckling Very perfumed with orange peel, hibiscus, and sliced strawberry aromas that follow through to a full body with layers of tannins and a juicy and chewy finish. A little traditional but solid.
  10. @Heartgrove Jack, have a wonderful birthday. Hope Sam helps sing Happy Birthday to you!
  11. I try never to give up hope, Terry. And though I no longer mention it every day - I keep Tana, you and your families in my prayers every day. And my positive nature gave me an amazing career.
  12. Thank you for today’s FR & D, Rich! Another lovely morning here. Yesterday was just lovely. Warm, but those strong Easterly winds made it enjoyable. Vanessa, glad to read you are taking care of yourself. Hope your BFF’s recovery is quick & smooth. Thank you for keeping up with all of us in spite of what is going on in your life. Gym, Bindi walks, Bindi’s annual physical with her Vet, a trip to the local wine bar to pick up the wine ordered at their last wine tasting & maybe a dip in the pool. I need to fit a couple chores in there, too. Prayers for all who need our support. @ger_77 Gerry, hope everything went well for Maurice & you yesterday. Cheers to all who are celebrating! Happy Birthday, Tana! May this be the first of many more, and may some physician/scientist find a way to help you! May we each find a reason to smile today. ************* Scott Base Sauvignon Blanc Another New Zealand SB should make our white wine lovers happy. I would love a taste. It is widely available and reasonably priced. Online prices start at $14.99. Winemaker Notes Scott Base Sauvignon Blanc has delicate herbal aromas of citrus blossom. It’s ripe and well balanced, with lemon, passionfruit and gooseberry on the palate. Vibrant acidity makes this a pleasing wine with great weight and a long finish. Serve with your favorite seafood. 92Wine Spectator Juicy and vibrant, with mango, Meyer lemon and lime flavors, plus fresh-grated ginger, lemon verbena and orange blossom notes on a sleek frame.
  13. Tina San Diego is a wonderful place to visit. I was lucky to guide at least 20 leadership classes at the Naval bases on Coronado, so I got to explore a lot. The Hop On - Hop Off is a great way to figure out what else you want spend time doing. The Botanical Garden is superb, and it has an amazing restaurant on its grounds. Spend some time walking around Coronado. The Del’s architecture and decor are lovely. Main Street has some love shops displaying the work of local artists. And if you love beaches, the one in front of the Del is gorgeous. Be sure to download the app for FRED. It is a free, eco-friendly shared vehicle that will take you anywhere in Central Downtown. The app gives you a map of the area they cover. Evenings can be busy. And so can days when big events are happening, but it is a fun way to get around - for just the cost of a tip. I think max occupancy is 8, though I don’t believe we shared one more than a time or two. The Gaslamp & Little Italy areas are fun to explore. Both offer great options for meals. The Maritime Museum & the USS Midway are interesting, if you have an interest in those areas. ok, that is all that comes to mind. Enjoy!
  14. Thank you for today’s FR & D, Rich! Another lovely morning. A bit warmer this morning. Yesterday was a lovely day. Vanessa, thank you for letting us know about your BFF’s surgery. Hope you rested well last night. Remember to take care of yourself. Thank you for keeping up with all of us. Bindi walks, chores, HIIT and a celebration of my last week in the 60s! Tough to believe. Prayers for all who need our support. @kazu Jacqui, praying that your days start getting better & a solution for your foot issue is found. Cheers to all who are celebrating. May we each find a reason to smile today. ************ La Crema Monterey Pinot Noir 2022 I am using the 2022 vintage info, since that seems to still be easy to find. This PN sounds interesting and easy to find. Love the flavors. Reasonable prices. Online price starts at $15.98. Winemaker Notes Raspberry, plum and rhubarb compote mingle with hints of tobacco leaf and earth on the nose. Cran-raspberry, boysenberry and pomegranate are underpinned by earth driven flavors of beets and black tea. Plush, richly textured with juicy yet balanced acidity and integrated toasty barrel spice. 91Wine Enthusiast This is a generous and approachable style of Pinot Noir sure to appease a large crowd, starting with aromas of strawberry, black cherry and vanilla ice cream. The palate is joyous in those same juicy fruits but balanced by decent tannins and a chipped slate minerality
  15. Holy cow, Lenda! They could hurt a person! Never mind property!
  16. @ottahand7 & @ger_77 Nancy & Gerry not sure if your voles eat grubs as mine do. But if you can figure out their food source and eliminate it, they will go. I use a product called Grub-ex. I apply it with a spreader. It usually takes two bags to tackle my 1/2 acre - if that helps. But it is worth it. My voles are no more. Bit I have to do it every Spring. Good luck! Ann
  17. Thank you for today’s FR & D, Rich! Another exquisite morning here. I am in my breakfast nook watching one of this year’s fawns getting breakfast from Mom & then getting cleaned behind the ears. This makes up for Mom eating all my African iris flowers. Vanessa thank you for keeping up with all our happenings. Praying everything goes smoothly for BFF and his recovery is quick. Gym, Bindi walks, chores - it will be a great day to wash the car & definitely some pool time. Prayers for all who need our support. @ger_77 Gerry, praying that Maurice’s surgery is not postponed and that all goes smoothly tomorrow. Cheers to all who are celebrating. May we each find a reason to smile today. ************ Loveblock Tee Sauvignon Blanc 2022 This New Zealand SB sounds interesting from a winemaker who helped bring New Zealand wines to the attention of the world. I used the 3022 vintage, since it is available. Widely available, reasonably priced with lots of fans. Online prices start at $20.95. Winemaker’s notes Here at Loveblock, we always make wine with lower levels of added sulphur, and TEE explores the elimination of added sulphur to wine (the traditional wine preservative). Oenological tannins are commonly used in the winemaking process to perform various functions. We found that the tannin extracted from green tea leaves (Camelia sinesis) also provides powerful protection against oxidation and spoilage as a natural antioxidant. The palate is elegant, with juicy mandarin, earthy cumin, sweet basil and ripe yellow star fruit (carambola). Layered and textured, the wine is clean and fresh with flavours of ripe pineapple and a mild tannin note sitting over a layer of umami. Organic, vegan friendly and from a single vineyard. Grown with love, made with care. Pairs with goats’ cheese, oysters, seafood, pasta and chicken Colour: Pale straw with a hint of green and gold. Aroma: This wine has lifted aromas of mandarin zest, quince, yellow peach, sweet basil, gooseberry, white pepper and distinct wet stone minerality, with structured herbal notes. Palate: The palate is elegant, with juicy mandarin, earthy cumin, sweet basil and ripe yellow star fruit (carambola). Layered and textured, the wine is clean and fresh with flavours of ripe pineapple and a mild tannin note sitting over a layer of umami. Vineyard Notes The grapes for this wine came from a small parcel of vines on our certified-organic Woolshed vineyard on the Loveblock Farm, in the Lower Dashwood sub-region of Marborough’s Awatere Valley. The soil type is predominately aged alluvial loams containing some silt loam over stone. Dependent on vigour, the vines are pruned to two or three canes and trained in a normal vertical shoot position. Harvest occurred in the month of March. No sulphur was added in the vineyard. Use of regenerative growth, manure and horn on the vineyard is employed to promote balanced, fertile soil, biodiversity and healthy grape growth in order to produce wine without the use of chemical pesticides, fungicides or additives of any kind. Vinification Here at Loveblock, we always make wine with lower levels of added sulphur, and TEE explores the elimination of added sulphur to wine (the traditional wine preservative). 18. Thank you for today’s FR & D, Rich! The morning breeze has cleared out the marine layer and the sun is shining brightly. Yesterday was really hot, but the winds kept the humidity to the West of me. Vanessa, thank you for keeping up with us. Praying that all goes well for BFF tomorrow. Just be sure to take care of yourself, too. Gym, Bindi walks, chores, and pool time. I may get my water weights out and do an evening workout in the pool. Prayers for all who need our support. Terry, hope you had a chance to rest. Praying that Tana has a good week. Cheers to all who are celebrating! May we each find a reason to smile today! *********** 2021 Pinot Blanc, Haus Klosterberg, Markus Molitor, Mosel This vintner’s Riesling is fairly easy to find in North America & is well respected. But their Pinot Blanc is elusive. It sounds lovely and if you live in - or are visiting Europe, you can enjoy it! Online prices start at $12.94, but none of the distributors I found ship outside of Europe. Distributor’s notes This dry Pinot Blanc from the Markus Molitor estate on the Central Moselle is redolent of yellow fruit and pear, complemented by the tang of slate so typical of this region. This tangy note harmonizes wonderfully with the wine’s juicy fruitiness. On the palate, the Markus Molitor Pinot Blanc Haus Klosterberg quality wine is stimulating, juicy and zesty thanks to its fresh and lively acidity. Enjoy this quality wine with potato-leek soup with prawns and croutons or summer lettuces with fried chanterelles and white balsamic foam. You‘ll like this dry Pinot Blanc produced from different vineyards in the Central Moselle region. Wine type: Weißwein Ageing Potential: 2028 Alcohol content: 12,0 % by volume Recommended drinking temperature: 9 °C Closure: Screw cap Allergen: contains Sulfite
  19. Thank you for today’s FR & D, Rich! Bindi & I encountered a brief shower during our morning walk today. This follows on the heels of last night’s wild storm. Though we had mostly rain & wind, we could see some of the massive lightning bolts over Daytona to the South. And some of the thunder booms made Bindi snuggle really close to me. Vanessa, thank you for keeping up with us. I never thought I would enjoy hearing about how much sleep a person gets each night. But I sure love reading about yours! Hope all goes smoothly for BFF this Tuesday. Gym, Bindi walks, chores, a visit with my Sister & Brayden and maybe some pool time. I thought of Bohemian Rhapsody. 😎 What song did you think of? Prayers for all who need our support. Cheers to all who are celebrating. May we each find a reason to smile today. ********** 2019 Stag’s Leap Merlot Well Rich made the hunt for today’s Wine du Jour fun. The first wine that caught my eye when I searched for “2019 Merlot” was Stag’s Leap. One of the venerable vintners that helped bring Napa to the attention of the world. So that is what I bring today. Numerous distributors, decent price and lots of fans. Online prices start at $29.99. Winemaker Notes With freshness exhibiting its southern Napa origins, the 2019 Merlot leaps from the glass with layers of ripe black cherry, blackberry, and dark raspberry, alongside baking spice notes of cinnamon spice, vanilla, and crème brûlée. Savory, chaparral notes of lavender, bay laurel, mint and thyme accompany succulent tones of cherry kirsch and bittersweet chocolate. Hints of anise and hazelnut play on the palate, a nod to the delicately interwoven oak integration. Opulent and plush with mouthwatering acidity, polished structure, and finesse, all framed by present, mouth-coating tannins, finishing with layers and depth, showcasing the balance, elegance, and grace of this exemplary Merlot. Blend: 94% Merlot, 5% Petite Sirah, 1% Malbec 93James Suckling Aromas of plums, ripe red cherries, wet stones and roses. Medium-to full-bodied with soft tannins. Juicy and succulent with a lovely bed of red fruit. So fresh, too. Enchanting. 94% merlot, 5% petite sirah and 1% malbec.
  20. Thank you so much Tina! I confess to not being tempted by just the recipe. But one taste was all I needed. 😎 It was so delicious. I can’t wait to try it myself.
  21. Thank you for today’s FR & D, Rich! Another lovely morning here. The deer herd has moved through and this year’s fawns are getting big. I just love to see them zoom around. We had some brief showers yesterday and a horrible humid period while the wind was totally dead. Once the wind came back, it turned into a gorgeous afternoon and evening. The Mexican dinner was wonderful. I had my first taste of Elote salad, and I will be hunting for recipes. It was delicious. Vanessa, thank you for keeping up with us. So glad you & BFF are safe. Gym, Bindi walks, chores, prepping for dinner with friends at my place. I plan to use the air fryer of my outdoor Ninja to make parmesan/panko crusted chicken. Salad and roasted veggies will round out the menu. And of course there will be wine. Prayers for all who need our support. Terry, I was so happy to read that your family is coming to help and give you a much needed break. Gerry, praying that Maurice’s cold improves enough so he can still have his surgery next week. Cheers to all who are celebrating. Happy Anniversary Katherine & Bob! @Norseh2o May we each find a reason to smile today. ************* Simonsig 2019 Redhill Pinotage (Stellenbosch) I recently learned that this variety of grape is a hybrid developed in South Africa. I would definitely love to try this one, it sounds delicious. A decent number of distributors with online prices starting at $36.98. Distributor notes The wine has a vivid dark red color. Bursting with fruit, there are aromas of cranberries, black cherries, and spicy raspberries with a perfume of violets, vanilla and musk candy. With excellent oak integration, fine elegant tannins and tangy acidity, the wine has a weightless intensity to it that makes it a fine wine. Wine Enthusiast (92 Points, Editor’s Choice, & #66 of the Top 100 Wines of 2023): “This is a well-structured red that has depth and nice acidity. The nose is aromatic, offering leather, spices and raspberries followed by notes of smoke. A firm structure holds the palate. Tart cherry, plum, hints of paprika, black pepper, cinnamon and smoke lead to a flavorful finish. Drink now through 2031.” Established in 1971, the Simonsig Estate is situated in the famous Stellenbosch Winelands just east of Cape Town. Frans Malan's groundbreaking innovations include South Africa's first Méthode Cap Classique Kaapse Vonkel.
