  1. On Oceania Sirena I was first diagnosed with Bronchitis. The cost of exam and medication nearly $700. The same evening returned to hospital with shortness as of breath, told I had pneumonia and needed to be hospitalized. Treated by doctor and nurse and discharged the following morning. Bill, $3000!

Better buy insurance, it's a good investment especially if you are "up in years."

  2. I love our Aussie cousins, always so positive thinking. Of g course the weather is going to be great and, because you are aboard an Oceania vessel, the smiles on the faces of the crew will make up for the lack of the sun's shining face.

Have a wonderful cruise - next week we join the Marina for a cruise to Norway, Iceland and the UK, leaving the beautiful sunshine of S. California for the beautiful sights of the north European coasts- we have been guaranteed 10 hours of the sunshine a day!! But you know what guarrantees are worth nowadays!!

  3. Michael:

I am so happy that you got a kick out if the RVL sail away song. When I play it on my gramophone, (what's that you may ask), I still get goosebumps. As you say, none of today's ships have the ambiance of the Royal Viking. However, when we cruised on that line we were a much smaller % of the population who floated on the 7 seas than now populate the behemoths they call cruise ships. I prefer to call them "places!"

Thank goodness for the small luxury lines which are catering to us "old" sailors. They are maintaining the qualities we enjoyed in "the good old days!"

  4. I still have a 45rpm vinyl record of the sail-a-way song that RVL Star used to play as she left port. It still brings a lump to my throat when I occasionally play it with memories of ports all over the world.

"When she sails away -Like a French Palaise -With the Lord and Ladies Smiling - We have Left the world on the shore - that's what paradise boats are for - She's a lovely sight o'er the waves so bright - like a royal swan she's gliding - We'll be all aboard - going far- on The Royal Viking Star."

    Remember it??

  5. I did not realise this thread was here but coincidentally I had started one a couple of weeks ago on the Silversea thread.

We started our cruising days aboard the Costa's "World Renaissance" in 1969. A trip from San Juan, Puerto Rico to the S. Caribbean. Quite a start being assigned the owners suite on a charter cruise. We were not too impressed with the accomodation, 2 bunk beds, high on the ship. Then we sailed on Sitmar to Alaska, this time in a very nice suite, we were hooked.

By the mid 70's we had found Royal Viking, the epitomy of luxury in those days. We sailed all over the world with them until their sad demise. Since then, with our discovery of Raddison (now Regent) on "The Song Of Flower" in 1994, we have stuck to the "luxury lines." (Except when we have taken family groups on Carnival.) The kids love that and so do we for great fun.

We have really enjoyed Oceania for service, food and itineraries and soon will set sail on Silver Sea, "Silver Shadow" to revisit the islands of French Polynesia. We started cruising in our 30's, now we are approaching our 80's so we must be "those old people" who, when we were younger seemed to be in the majority!:):):)
