You will get a taxi at the port :).  Some of the taxis may not want to take the short haul (to the train station) but there are always some drivers who have no problem with the ride.  Just make sure to settle on a price before you get in the taxi.   We have sometimes lucked out and shared a large van/taxi for 5€ per person although some drivers will want 10€.  The last time we took the train with lots of luggage we had no problems at the Le Havre end...but were somewhat frustrated in Paris.  The taxi queue outside the station was very long and there were very few taxis.  DW and I finally decided to walk a few blocks (with all our luggage) to another taxi stand where we were finally successful in getting a cab.  By the way, our favorite taxi company in Paris is "G7" who actually has an English speaking number for when you may want to reserve or summon a taxi to an area without taxi stands.  Since we usually rent an apartment in Paris we always need a taxi when we are ready to leave...and will reserve with G7 the day before.  They have never failed us.  But this is not very helpful for outside train stations.

    Thank you

  2. Going to be on the Edge TA and and am disembarking in LR Havre, France and going to stay in Paris for a few days.  Have never done this before and am concerned about being able to get a taxi to the train station, dealing with luggage, etc.  my cousin is 75 and will have 2 pieces of luggage to deal with.

thought of trying to find a private car/driver but it sounds way too costly.

Are we crazy for trying this? Or is it doable.

    thank you!

  3. Hope you are safe and your home makes it through the hurricane. I do not feel the Royal owes you anything. You booked a cruise during hurricane season-bottom line. You knew the risk you were taking when you booked it. They owe you nothing. I have taken my chance before and was in hurricane weather where we just sailed up the coast of the Carolinas. I was not reimbursed or offered any compensation and didn't expect it. Again it was my choice and I knew the risk I was taking.

  4. I cannot resist but tell this amusing tale. The Celebrity Silhouette has a very popular Captain known as "Captain Demitrius" who is a Greek gentleman who could have his own late night comedy show. Every cruise he gives a talk (in the main theater) about the Bridge and ship operations...and its generally SRO...with most coming for the jokes. On one of these occasions he took questions from the passengers and a lady asked, "what happens if you get sick or are incapacitated." He responded, " my Staff Captain would take over...and he is a fully qualified Captain...and also Greek!" The lady then asked, "and what if he is also sick." Captain Demitrius responded, "My First Officer is also a licensed Captain and would easily take over.....and he is Greek!" And then somebody shouted out... what if he is also sick. Captain Demitrius took a long pause and then answered "Then, we are all having a very bad day. The next in command is not yet licensed as a Captain....and he is NOT Greek."

  5. It varies line by line. On a few lines, Captains and the other very Senior Officers work approximately 3 months on and 3 months off. We have a friend who is a recently retired cruise ship Captain. He once told us that as a Senior Officer on a cruise line (he was the Master at that time) he technically worked 24/7. And it was the same for his Chief Engineer and other senior staff. While they might have off-duty time, they were always on call and always had their areas of responsibility. So even when a Captain was asleep in his/her cabin....they were still the Captain and always responsible for every soul aboard. For the less senior staff. there is even more variance by cruise line. And work schedules can change for many reasons..so things do not always work as perfectly as some would hope. Senior Officers do get sick, have family emergencies, etc. Their jobs must be covered and the home office folks who deal with staffing much sometimes think out of the box.

  6. I know how long dining and room stewards contracts are, but how long are the officers contracts? I was just on Royal and someone said they were for 4 months with 6 weeks vacation. I thought the captain said he got a 6 week vacation.
