I think that any suggestion that Cruise ships shouldn’t cruise NZ because of NZ’s strict requirements is unfortunate. These are not new rules and are designed to protect our environment in the same way Australia chooses to protect its environment. I blame the Cruise Companies. They knew these rules existed. In normal circumstances, ships are regularly dry docked and have their hulls cleaned. I suspect that with dry docks being unavailable during COVID, that the problem will only get worse with available dry docking spots being in demand.

Attached is a video from YouTube posted by Alfie Smith who is senior second officer with Princess Cruises. He has given a very interesting account of what happened to Ever Given including the reasons his experience could have been the cause of the incident. One interesting point he makes is, this is not the first time that Ever Given has been in this situation;. Also, blocked the Hamburg Canal for a period.

I am not sure if this has already been posted but there is a very interesting channel on YouTube called 'Same Ship Different Day" .
The owner of the channel is the Alfie Smith who is the Second Senior Officer on the Coral Princess. He has posted a number of videos over a period of weeks documenting what's been happening and how Princess are going about getting crew and passengers home.

The Police have now advised that one person has been killed and there is likely to be further fatalities. Apparently there are people still on the Island unaccounted for. According to Port of Tauranga there were 28 passengers on an official ships tour from Ovation of the Seas. It’s not known whether any are injured at this point but the ship is remaining in Port overnight.

I live in Christchurch and I can assure that a lot of progress in the rebuild has occurred. In the past month 2 large shopping malls in city have opened including stores such as H & M. Sure there are still empty spaces but the centre is a hive of activity. A decision has just been made to restore the Cathedral.

Try Tisa's Barefoot Bar which is about 10kms from Pago Pago. Caught a local bus which dropped us off and then picked us again later in the day. Great host with bar and food available. Had Mahi Mahi for lunch.
Good beach and snorkelling opportunity.

At the moment, NZ has reverted back to using cards that you are given on the plane to complete. The system used last year was suspended in Oct 2022 and is being replaced by an online system similar to that used last year. Supposed to be operative in June this year.
So don’t panic. You will have to complete the form irrespective of completing an online version.
