  1. Thanks so much everyone, you have given us plenty to think about :)

We stayed in an apartment on via Roma in Vernazza across from the bakery.

Night time is amazing and to wake early morning before the crowds arrive and enjoy a walk is worth the effort with your bags. Actually the guy who owned the apartment we stayed in met us at the train station and carried our bags to the 3rd floor and on leaving carried them back to the station. We set off for our hikes at first light to visit other villages. Enjoy

  2. Many of the local rental car companies such as Gold Car actually have you return the car empty, while the international companies tend to use the traditional model.

If I have an early flight, I sometimes just stay at the Tryp Guadalmar near the airport as I save the hassle of the morning drive. I get this hotel for 50 euro plus at times and parking is included. There are other options, but I have used this one for years.

If you are driving late and taking the AP7 you will have a 24 hour Repsol right on the motorway at kilometer 224 at Arroyo de Miel at Torremolinos. If you fill up here you should be fine for the airport with the gauge still on the full mark.

Otherwise you have Repsols at Ave. Velazquez 208 near the airport.

On the Carretera N-340 at kilometer 231.9 you have a 24 hour Repsol.

The Repsol at MANUEL FRAGA IRIBARNE,14 Torremolinos is also 24 hours .

Most of the manned stations are open from 6 am to midnight otherwise.

Thank you very much for all that information

  3. I live 40 minutes away from Malaga.

Having seen a far from complimentary post on here recently - obviously someone who missed all the best bits of the city as they called it smelly and dirty????? - it seems that there is a lack of information available.

If I can help answer any of your queries feel free to ask.

Malaga is a fascinating, vibrant city that should not be missed and not just used as a stepping stone to Granada or Nerja.

We are flying out of Malaga at 7am to Barcelona to join a cruise. We need to return a rental car and are hoping there will be some gas stations open early and close to the airport. Will be driving in from Jimena de la Frontera very early. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  4. I've only been able to find the cost in 2011 (50 euros/pp) for the Meteora VIP Taxi tour on Volos, Greece. I think they're 1 in Tripadvisor. We will be on the Oceania Riviera in late September and have from 12PM to 8PM in port.

    1) Is there enough time from 12-8 to do that tour?

    2) does anyone know the current 2015 cost? You can't find out any costs on their website...

    TIA

Last year We used Nikos from taxiinvolos.gr

Check out the web site. We paid 220Euro for 4 in a Mercedes.

Nikos is so great. I left my change purse in his car and he mailed me the money. He was perfect with timing and was a great guide.

  5. Hey Guys, just looking at what to do when we dock in Naples, we sail in around 3 weeks on the Norwegian Epic (2 adults and our daughter), i'm looking at arranging our own excursion from port we have plenty of time around 11 hours, up to now I plan on taking the hydrofoil from Naples to Capri and thought it would be a good idea to Take the Chairlift from Anacapri to Monte Solaro (transfer by bus from the Marina to Anacapri) and on return to Anacapri take the bus to Grotto Azzurra and see the Blue Grotto by boat then return to the Marina by same bus routes, I just wondered had anyone done this or similar is it a good plan :) and doable etc.

Id appreciate and suggestions and/or advice.

Take the chair lift. The views are amazing.

  6. Has anybody used the public buses at either Stornoway or Kirkwall to visit the sights? It appears you can get to the standing stones and other tourist points via the bus, and I wondered if anybody has done so.

I did email the transit offices on the islands, but the real experience of others is often the best advice.

Last year while in Stornoway I took the W2 bus from the bus terminus just across from the terminal to Port of Ness for £5.50 return. Beautiful scenery and worth the trip.

  7. Your directions are correct. Tram to end of line (it is only 1 or 2 stops depending where you are docked) then swap over to the funicular up to Taksim. Make your way up to Taksim Square - travelators/lifts. Itikail street is off Taksim square. The historic tram goes down it. From memory, You need a seperate ticket for each journey. Depending how long you are in Istanbul - we had bought a travel card (up to 5 people can use the same card) and loaded it with some Lira. Tap on and off. You get a discount on each consecutive trip. If you then catch the historic tram to the end you can then either walk down to the Galata Tower and Galata bridge and back to the cruise ship terminal or there is another funicular down to the Galata bridge area. We did this our last morning plenty of time to be back on ship for lunch.

We did this in November. Great way to spend the morning before departure. We took the old tram down but from what we could see walking down and exploring could be fun. Had to buy the Istanbulkart before boarding historic tram. Kept it for our next visit. Enjoy

  8. Background: We will be flying from Boston into and out of London for our extended trip August - September and into October. It will include visits to Devon and Cornwall (family heritage), an escorted tour out of London around the British Isles, Paris, Italy (cousins reunion) and possibly Switzerland and or an eastern Med cruise. Then back to London area for a bit more before westbound to home. We travel relatively light - one roller back and one shoulder tote each.

We fly through Iceland for shorter flights so we can choose LHR or LGW. Would like a train to Devon after our arrival then a rental car for the western visit; then possibly train or ferry to France and into Paris.... probably train to Milan for cousins reunion, eventually fly back to England for time in London.

    Transportation questions:

Do trains go west from Gatwick to Devon?

How does one get from Gatwick to London - coach or train?

Considering Ferry from Portsmouth to LeHavre then train into Paris... this seems faster than going from Portsmouth all the way to London for the Eurostar to Paris.

Any thoughts will help me! Thank you all. This is a part of our world I haven't been to in 40+ years and I'm so excited to be planning it but it is a big bite. CCers are the best! m--

We did a similar trip last year. Flew to Heathrow, underground to Paddington for Great Western Train. Found Easyjet great to get to Paris and Venice. Enjoy

  9. Two senior couples staying for 3 days post cruise. We cannot deal with more than one flight of stairs and we would prefer a moderate to budget priced hotel in a good location. We often stay at B&B's and that would be fine as well (assuming VERY limited stairs).

Try the Morgan House Bed and Breakfast.....Cerro Alegra...Maria the owner was wonderful. Great location and Value

  10. Has anyone rented a car and driven themselves to sights of interest in Puerto Montt? If so, can you relay your experience? Thanks.

We rented from Europcar but for a few days. Lots of traffic around Puerto Montt but easy driving once we left the town. If you are only 1 day in port suggest you take a taxi to the sites. There will be lots of tour people standing outside the gate offering tours which we used on a 1 day stop.

  11. We're on a TA in May that ends in Southampton, and we'd like to visit Scotland for a few days before flying home to US. I've been advised that Glasgow is a good base for days trips, but I'm not sure the best way to get there from Southampton. I'd love to take a train if it would mean traveling through scenic countryside. What would you suggest?

We booked our train journey to Edinburgh from London on East Coast site. If you book 3 months out they have some great deals.

  12. The newest thread that pops up in a search on this topic is five years old and there's one that's older still.

Can anyone supply information about a reliable taxi service to/from the port?

Can anyone recommend a tour guide for a tour within Brugge? Incidentally, I'm interested in a tour guide for his/her expert knowledge, not navigation.

    Thanks

Check out Ronystaxis......we have booked with them 50 euro roundtrip just taxi not a tour guide

  13. or…. check out APTours. They will give you the same amazing day as RIL but do it a bit cheaper……

I love to get the same thing for less :D

PS: Pompeii and Amalfi is a full day ! Save Capri for another trip :)

We used APTours. Guide was amazing

  14. Due to lack of Frequent Flyer Award seats near New Year's holiday, I will be laying over in Johannesburg from Saturday through until my evening flight on Tuesday, Jan. 3-6.

I am considering doing a safari but I will be traveling alone. Any suggestions on good companies to contact? Is Pilanesberg a better choice since it's a shorter drive than Kroger? My primary interest is in big cats and birds.

I would need pick-up and drop off at Jo'burg Int'l Airport. Thanks.

Would not recommend driving to Kruger but you can fly in. Our choice is Tanda Tula. They will pick you up at Phalaborwa airport. Our visits there have been spectacular and we even saw white lion.

  15. Thank you for that info. We actually dock on a Friday afternoon, disembark on Saturday and fly home on Monday. So, we will have time to do both markets.

Would you recommend a guide or with some advance planning is it doable on our own?

We bought Lonely Planet Istanbul Encounter......worth it and we were able to do it on our own and at our pace. We will be back in October for more of this amazing city. We even took the locals ferry up the Bosphorus to Anadolu Kavagi. Wonderful to experience the local culture and the people. Enjoy

  16. Gosh I need some advice! We plan on arriving to London 7 days early so we can travel up to Scotland. So what's the best way of doing that? Heathrow or Gatwick? What train transportation up to Scotland? Our ultimate destination is the Duart Castle, on the Isle of Mull. Then from there, I'd enjoy YOUR suggestions. We spent a month backpacking through Italy in April, so using AirBnb in enchanting locations is instrumental.

Looking forward to your advice and suggestions!

    Jesse & Brenda

We will be doing a similar trip in mid September. Taking the train to Edinburgh and then picking up a rental. After a few days around Edinburgh we are heading to Loch Lomand then onto Isle of Skye returning to London by train. We used tripadvisor to find bed and breakfasts along the way. Enjoy

  17. I am due to set sail aboard Marco Polo from Tilbury to the Fjords,29th this month can anybody tell me what parking is like, how far from the berth,is it secure ect?

Any other info would be appreciated.

Just copied this from C and M web site.......maybe you want to book upfront

    Port parking

The Port of London Tilbury offers pre-bookable long term car parking at £11 per vehicle per night (£7 per vehicle per night for cruises of 30 nights or more). To reserve a car parking place at London Tilbury, simply request at the time of booking and the cost will be added to your holiday. Full details will be sent with your final documentation. It should be noted that we act as agents only for car parking reservations and bookings are subject to the Port of Tilbury’s car parking conditions
