If you were charged the full price for the dining plan for the 12-year old, I don't understand why they would have a problem with her ordering off the adult menu.  Almost sounds like some sort of misunderstanding, like they thought you wanted some credit for the child's price.

Nope - she was 10 at the time and we explained several times that we had paid for an adult meal because that’s what she preferred to eat.  They were insistent that she HAD to order from the children’s menu even after I showed them that we had paid for an adult meal and they finally gave in after a lot of back and forth.  She was insulted by the kids’ offerings and will still go into a rant about “chicken lollipops” if it’s brought up.

  2. Does anyone have experience with the dining plans and a 12 year old?  We are looking to purchase the UDP and the fine print says it excludes 12 and under, but we had planned to purchase it for her as she does not eat from the kids menus.  We had to argue in Jamie’s on our last cruise for them to allow her to order from the adult menu even though we had purchased an adult meal for her pre-cruise.

  3. My husband was diagnosed with type II diabetes a couple of months before our last cruise and we really worried about how things would go following his diet and managing medication onboard.  It turned out not to be a concern as there were so many options.  A typical breakfast included eggs and fruit.  For lunch he would make a salad and add protein of some sort.  Dinner he used common sense, but never went without and usually had a couple bites of a dessert with me. We walked a lot and took the stairs as much as possible.  (He lost about 30 lbs the first few months and was taken off insulin before we cruised, thankfully.)  A little bit of willpower goes a long way, but there are plenty of healthy options available.

  4. We just booked one of these cabins and I’m reading mixed information regarding the view and noise level. Some people and travel sites are excited about the location and what it offers, while I’ve read individual reviews saying, “Don’t do it!”

For us, we chose the location so that we could have that inward facing cabin and still see some ocean. A little concerned about the noise level from the aqua theatre at night, but I think we’ll be okay.

  5. We stayed at the Hosteria Grau when we stayed in Barcelona. It's pretty close to the Ramblas and was inexpensive. http://www.hostalgrau.com/

We would recommend this location as well, especially if you are traveling with family. We had a lovely 2 bedroom flat with a kitchenette. The location is off La Rambla but within easy walking distance while being in a quieter area. Plus, it it across from Choc - yum!!!

We were actually considering ordering these but have not tried them yet. DH was recently diagnosed diabetic, so we are trying to find options that will work for him on our upcoming cruise.

  7. Yes I'm so sorry I am very! It's a curse! It's only on trips though everything else I pull the trigger no problem!

Thank you all once again. You guys are the best!

Don't feel bad, we're in near exactly the same boat! (Pun intended). We're leaning towards Celebrity, but in our case the ports matter to us. I'd love to sail the HoS, but have read a lot about the lines and crowds that seem to plague the ship. It's a toss up but we're really looking for something different than Carnival for our 20th anniversary.

  8. We brought back several bottles of wine from Europe last summer without mishap. I brought bubble wrap with us (large bubbles) for this purpose and wrapped the bottles in that, then in a tied heavyweight plastic bag. They were separated in our luggage and surrounded by clothing.

  9. Not sure how many are in your party, but our family had an apartment at Hostal Grau last summer and we loved it. Reasonably priced cool little boutique hotel and very close to Las Ramblas and Plaça Catalunya.

  10. We're doing a mix of on our own and tours. Rome is actually pretty easy to get around, we did a land based trip a couple years ago and that was the easiest stop we had and easy public transportation options.

We opted to book a private excursion for Sicily as we're there on a Sunday, a private excursion for Naples to Pompeii and Taormina, and a Carnival excursion for Marseilles. The other 2 Italy stops we're doing on our own as well as Palma. (Not sure of your itinerary.)

  11. I'm interested in this as well, it will be interesting to hear how it goes on the European sailings with all the port days and mixed demographics. Right now there aren't a lot of kids/teens traveling due to the school year and finals, but that will be changing over the next couple of sailings :)

  12. We're booked at Hostal Grau, very near Las Ramblas and appears to be in easy walking distance of most sites and convenient to the metro. We're also traveling with our daughters (8,16) and were able to book a two bedroom family suite for a very reasonable rate.

  13. I have two cove cabins next to each other on the Vista. Do you think they will open up to be one big balcony? We've never had a cove balcony before.

We have the same - connecting cove balconies, and I'm really hoping we can open up the partition between them but it will depend one which way the sealing door is situated that they use to close it off in bad weather. It would make sense, but I've read that this isn't always the case.

  14. We're close, but not across from, the launderette on deck 2. We were across from it on a sailing one time and it was only an issue on elegant night due to the line of people waiting to iron. Opened the door to go out and the guy that had been leaning on it fell into our cabin. Oops.

  15. We only cruise in Europe and the number of men in a Tux is very small.I think everyone should wear whatever they want but you will not be uncomfortable if you decide not to pack a Tux.Most people do some traveling before or after the cruise and luggage space is limited.

Interesting, we weren't sure (but were hoping) if elegant night would be more conformed to in Europe compared to the Caribbean. DH is packing a nice suit for the trip, not a tux, but we will still be dressed up.

  16. Not sure if it will help, but I was able to confirm for our July 1 cruise (8 nights) that the elegant nights would be the sea day (second night) and the next to last night - we get back onboard following our Palma stop at 5:00pm, the earliest of any of our port days.
