I remember him well, and we are still in contact.

It was not dementia; his mind still works very well. It's the rest of his body that has failed somewhat (which one of us can't say that). He's still among the living, and gets great care where he lives.
He did have a weekly newspaper column, as well as taught at Kings College.

Anybody call for tomc?  Here I am.  Currently living at an adult care center at the University of Notre Dame  where I am very active, a terror on wheels and a bringer of joy to all.  As a character in fiction always said, "There's a dance in the old dame yet."  This post came to you live from Notre Dame, Indiana.

  2. I'm an insider because it's cheaper. When I bed down for the night, I turn the tv on to the bow camera which, naturally, is black. But the set itself acts like a very dim night light, which is good when you wake up in a strange place and need to find the bathroom without tripping over the furniture and/or ending up in the hallway.

Additionally, when the sun starts coming up, the tv also slowly comes to life and as I wake, there is a picture of either the North Atlantic, or one of the ports. A nice view, better than what I get at home.

If you are alone and like classical music, you can turn the sound up just a bit to soothe the cares away.

  3. I have a TracFone and can use it only in the US and possessions. Won't work on the ship or in Canada.

I don't need to do anything but make and receive calls, nor do I need that many minutes, so I just buy 400/year plus 200 bonus for $100. It seems to work well for me and I roll over minutes at the end. Right now, I have 100 minutes/month to use so I better get hopping before I get another 600 in September!

Only three people know my number and two of them don't use it. It's for my convenience and I can be easily reached at my home phone & answering machine.

And how about a decent classical TV/music channel?
Channel 43, I think, is the classical music channel; it's the stern camera channel. I'm sure there is a classical audio channel on the behind-the-bed set; I did not use it this time because I had a roommate, but have on other occasions.

Didn't know Finkel was still performing on HAL. I saw him "perform" at the Front Office on Nieuw Amsterdam inbound to Tampa once - wasn't pretty!
I'm acquainted with Elliott from some years back, as a fellow entertainer, (as was my mother) and always found him a pretty nice guy. Did he lose it?

Keep in mind that HAL reads these boards, so be discreet as to how much you dish about things and people on board.

I'm just a pax, but one time I slipped and accidentally let something get in that identified a concessionaire and I think that was the end of the line for the person. I still feel bad about it, although the person should not have been dishing to me about the situation.

  6. "...This just in to Mid-Morning News: The crap hit the fan today on Holland America Line's Merdedam when a passenger confronted a cabin steward over how the toilet paper was placed in its holder. The steward had accidentally put it "under" and the passenger wanted it "over." The steward's grasp of English was not that good and, when asked, "Exactly how am I supposed to use it this way!?" the steward smiled and said, "Sir, shove it up your @."

  7. I'm just so worried because DH's cruise is going to be ruined if it's rolling from under.

(tomc raises an eyebrow, rolls his eyes, mutters, "this has to be a [censored] joke," thinks about people who scrounge thru garbage dumps looking for something to eat, expresses sorrow for cruises supposedly ruined by any reason, sighs and goes back to work.)

I am surprised you guys are such experts on the Sky deck at night.
I write comedy on the side and people who think I'd be out there doing any of this find it quite funny. My original fantasy, when in high school, was to hijack a school bus full of teenage girls but now I'd settle for a Senior Citizens van full of women who still have their hearing, most of their teeth and aren't headed for a Bingo hall.
