  1. We will arriving in Dover on June 5, 2016 (Sunday) on the Disney Magic. Ashore time is 7am, although I know that can be later. We have a flight scheduled for 1:10pm out of Gatwick but after reading suggestions from others, I am now concerned that we may not be able to make it. I am usually more on top of things but for some reason I never doubted that it wouldn't be enough time until I started reading others' suggestions of flights 3pm or later.

We can do express walkoff. We will have our 2 children with us (ages 17 & 10) but they are pretty experienced travelers for their age and have traveled with luggage via public transport between aiports and Paris, Seattle, Vancouver and have made several tight connections in very large airports.

Do we need to consider changing our flights (and pay change fees) or should we be ok? And if it's doable, what is the most dependable yet most efficient? Taxi, private shuttle?

    THANKS!!!

  2. Forward is wonderful for approaches into port, (Malta, anyone?) and for viewing, such as in Alaska and the Chilean fjords, and who wouldn't love to be "front and center" going through the Panama Canal?. But the caveat is wind. While at sea there is wind to contend with. But... The scene from Titanic comes to mind. The exhilaration. The pulse of the ship meeting the sea is something magical.

There is not a lot of wind when sailing the Inside Passage. However, it can get quite windy when in the "open sea"!

I sailed forward from Vancouver, BC....and it's been a number of years so my memory may be lacking.....but I remember being out of the deck a lot. Some of the time we were sitting, having a cocktail and talking so we were blocked from the wind.

That was my first forward cruise, and I haven't stopped since....well, when we were in the Garden Villa on the Jewel we were technically midship....and that was a once in a lifetime suite! :o

Thanks for the info! I did pick one of the suites on the far side of forward as it appears the veranda is covered and shielded partially on the side. Hopefully that will help cut down on the wind.

I was really wanting aft but one wasn't available when I booked (14 months from sailing date). Then a couple months ago an aft penthouse opened up. Unfortunately, the price was about 50% higher than what we paid on the forward penthouse so we passed on changing.

  3. Sailing the Inside Passage, Glacier Bay or Sawyer Glacier with an unobstructed view...and not fighting for a great spot near the rail to take pictures!

I sailed the first time in an inside cabin....and never got a really good picture...but boy did I get fabulous ones on my second cruise in the forward penthouse!

Plus it's just peaceful to just stand out there - especially in Skagway - and just soak in the beauty! We've never been ones to get back to the ship at the last minute so we always relax on the balcony before sail away.

One of these days I'm going to try an aft suite....but I just can't seem to stay away from the forward suites!

    You won't be sorry...I promise!! ;)

We're in a forward Penthouse on the Sun in just 2 months! All that sounds wonderful!!! But I am a bit concerned about all the wind that we might get from being forward. Is that a problem?

  4.

What do you think? Do you like to switch on the channel every now or then or could care less?

I hope they have it when we cruise the Sun in late May. DCL use to have it and when we went last March, I really missed it :-( It showed distance from last port, distance to next port, total distance traveled, weather and seas information. I liked taking pics of the screen, lol

  5. I'm really sorry about the way you were treated on the Disney forums. We love Disney Cruise Line and I have "met" a couple of these people through message boards. I knew I didn't like them by the way they acted and found out that many others felt the same way. I even ran into one on a cruise that solidified the way I felt when she said "Oh, you don't look ANYTHING like I excepted you to look!" in a hateful tone. And I almost said "Well, you're a LOT uglier than I excepted you to look!" but being the person I am, I just smiled.

Anyway, the amount of nice people I've met far outweigh those "nasty" people. I keep in touch with many of them and have met up with some of them on other cruises.

I don't have any advice on other lines are we are not taking our first non-DCL cruise for a few months. But again, sorry about the way you were treated! Good luck deciding :-)

BTW, if you do reconsider and have any DCL specific questions, feel free to send me a PM :-)

  6. I guess it's the same if it's before the PIF date? Too bad :-( When we booked, about 10 months ago, there were no aft Penthouses, only forward. Now there is one but it's about $2500 more than what we paid for our forward, but only a couple hundred more than the current cost of the forwards.

I've only sailed on another line where you can upgrade and you are given the rate for the new cabin of what it was when you originally booked that date. But of course that cruise line typically has quite a bit higher fares to begin with :-)

  7. This last week while eating breakfast in a hotel and pouring syrup from individual containers onto my son's waffle, it dawned on me to check out Amazon for something similar. I found Kraft syrup individual containers. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE waffles, French Toast, and pancakes for breakfast so this thread has had me concerned. Perhaps I have found a solution. Sure, I could take a bottle but this way I won't have to run back to the cabin to take it back.

For those accustomed to real maple syrup, this might be a disappointment. But I grew up on the "cheap" stuff and will be fine and dandy eating this :D

It won't be the first time I've taken on my own stuff for breakfast. On my past couple cruises I have taken individual Nutella packets as that stuff is awesome on fresh fruit, waffles and pancakes. I have had people stop me and ask where I got it from and had to disappoint that I brought it on.

  8. depends how close you are to mardi gras - many schools in New Orleans give the kids a week off at mardi gras so the numbers rise

Agree! Many area families take vacations to Disney and crusing during Mardi Gras week. The city is crazy that week so it's a good time for families to leave town :-)

  9. Our first cruise was the 2nd week of Dec 2009. I'm a Southern girl and I don't do cold, lol but I was able to get use to it. Yes, it was a bit chilly at first but I did get use to it quite quickly. OTOH, it was too cold this past March for myself. My husband and son got in, along with quite a few other people but I couldn't get past my knees!

  10. Glad I found this! We are cruising in a penthouse suite next May and have never sailed in suites before. I don't plan on having him/her pack or unpack but do plan to have a few meals in our room and hope t have snacks dropped off for the kids. We are not high maintenance people but do want to enjoy the basic benefits of a butler. I can't imagine requesting meals be served course by course but am looking forward to dining in our room some :-)
