I toured w/ Ellis 3 years ago and he was fabulous. I still follow his FB page, he is touring again but has modified tours due to the hurricane damage.

As a Physical Therapist, I would recommend you postpone your cruise. I hope you have travel insurance!! I have seen the good, bad and ugly post surgery and you do just not know how it will go. The surgery can still go great but you can have prolonged pain, reduced ROM, etc. Why push it. I wish you all the best with your surgery and recovery!!

You can walk into OSJ from the cruise ship pier. Then do a walking tour of the city. There are several you can find on line for a self guided tour, I will try to find you some links and post them for you. You can also catch a ferry to go to the Bacardi rum factory, then take a shared taxi when the ferry lands to get all the way to the factory. We are staying in OSJ 2 days before our cruise leaves, we love it there. So much to do.
-Adding --the free trolleys in OSJ are up and running again, they can help you get around, OSJ is a bit hilly and has uneven streets if that is an issue for you.

Looks like the restaurants should be open now. This link was updated 11/17 and said most of the restaurants were open then. It has good general info. http://www.puertoricodaytrips.com/guavate-lechon-and-music/

Agree food is better on Princess but that is all. Took he most boring cruise w/ Princess last March, the ports were great but the ship/activities were dull--mostly trivia, bingo etc. Many sedentary activities. If they had dance classes, crafts classes etc so many people showed up only about 1/3 could participate. Think they would know how to plan this better by now... Shows very amateur, dancers not good. I only used Princess as RCL has stopped the West coast Mex Riv cruises. But now decided it is worth it to fly across the country to get on a fun cruise

Lots of good info in Trip Advisor. If you are looking for fancy try Casa 46. Owned by the Pueblo Bonito group. We ate there in December while vacationing in Mazatlan. Very delicious, upscale , contemporary food. We also enjoyed Waters Edge Bistro. It is owned by an expat Canadian couple. It is a few blocks from the Plaza. The Mercado is very interesting and not to be missed. There are teeny tiny restaurants in the upper level but many gringos may not feel comfortable there, but they intrigued me and I plan to try eating there next time we vacation there again . Enjoy!!

I just booked tours for PV and Mazatlan throgh a company called Shore Excursions Group, you can search them. They offered a great combo deal for the two city sightseeing tours. Taking my mom who is not super active. The company uses other companies to actually do the tours but the tours are timed to ships arrival times. I had a hard time finding times and days for tours when I searched prior to finding this site. Good luck.

Just home from the 3/1 sailing. No enforcement of boarding by deck times, we arrived about 1:30 and did not have to wait in line. There were 3 ice show performances, no tickets needed, not crowded

Karena1-- I believe ret navy was speaking of an annual travel insurance policy. These are not very expensive.

I am cruising out of SJ 3/15 and spending 4 extra days in SJ . Just for fun I signed up for groupons.com Puerto Rico and Gustazos.com, a similar program. Have enjoyed reading the discounts. I have not purchased any yet as they expire before my visit. Interesting reading though, some of you might enjoy this.

I know you can leave your luggage for the day at Barrachina , a restaurant in OSJ but it looks like they do not open until 1100. Maybe a basic hotel room is the answer... I am on that same flight in Feb but we decided to arrive a couple of days early to explore.

Jet blue did look great for me too but I was too impatient to wait for the time period to open up. Needed to get time off work, hotel etc. Wished all airlines booked a year out!!

I purchased this package for myself and my teen age son. We both loved it. We both drank the fresh squeezed OJ. He drank fraps, virgin frozen drinks all day long when on the ship. He loved being able to go up to the bar and order drinks. I liked my lattes in the morning, fraps later on and frozen virgin drinks at any time. Also had Peligrino each night at dinner. Only problem was I drank a lot more sugar and calories than I normally drink. I know this contributed to my cruise weight gain. I think the package is definitely worth it, just may do the soda package for myself due to the calories. Also loved those bottled waters: still water to carry around and stay hydrated and to take off on port days.

Lots of shops, restaurants and bars in Old San Juan but if you want a really fun locals experience, check out La Placita de Santurce. Here is one link, do a search and you will find more info.
