  1. Do a combo, train one way and bus the other. Did this a few years ago on my last trip to Alaska. Was one of the best excursions we have had. With the bus, you get to see so much more that you will not see doing just the train-like Emerald Lake. We did not book through the cruise line. We used Chilkoot Charters. Great company. Again, my experience with them was about 5 yrs ago.

  2. I took my 3 year old grandson to Blue Lagoon in January. It was absolutely the highlight of our trip. He really enjoyed his time in the water with the dolphins. I had to hold him the entire time, but they were really good about making sure that both of us got the chance to do each interaction with the dolphins.

They do allow for 'observers' so if the other grandparents did not want to actually interact with the dolphins, they would not need to pay for that. But they do require an adult for each child. So someone would need to go with the children during the interaction time.

We also enjoyed the beach after our time with dolphins was completed. You can also walk around and see all the dolphins and other sealife that they have on site. They currently have a baby dolphin (was 8 wks old at the time of our visit).

I don't think you will be disappointed in this excursion. My grandson keeps asking to go back :)

  3. Considering this excursion, or just the beach day at Blue Lagoon. My grandson is fascinated with dolphins. But I would like to hear if anyone has taken a toddler on this excursion. Were they afraid of the dolphins once they got that close to them? He does really good with stingrays up close, but a dolphin is quite a bit bigger 🙂

  4. I had planned to book this excursion directly with the vendor, but it was sold out so I had to book through Carnival since my dad really wanted to go on this tour. On our trip last week, the cruise director mentioned the excursion price match during one of her talks. So I went ahead and submitted a request at the excursion desk onboard once we got back from the tour. It was granted-so I got a $110 credit for our two tickets :)

Thought I would share on here in case anyone else booked this tour directly with Carnival. I did not have a brochure to give them for the price match, but I gave them the vendor's web address, so they saw it was $169 vs Carnival's $220 price.

The web address I gave was alaskacrabtourdotcom (replace the word dot with an actual dot since we cannot post site addresses on here).

  5. Are these plans on all ships? My dad and I will be sailing on Legend in Alaska next month. I have custody of my 10 month old grandson. He will be staying with his other grandparents during my trip. This would be very helpful keeping in contact with them while I am gone.

  6. Quick question, my dad and I are doing this tour next month. We are going bus up and train back down to Skagway. I know on the train back down to sit on the right side of the train car for the best view. What about on the bus ride?

  7. You have a while to wait. The schedule for Alaska 2018 probably will not be available until March/April 2017. I booked my trip for this May shortly after the schedule was released and booked it in early April 2015.

In the meantime, hit up the Alaska port of call forum. I got so much good information for the first trip we took to Alaska in 2011, as well as our upcoming trip.

  8. Looking for recommendations for this excursion. My dad wants to do a whale watch and salmon bake at Orca Point when we are in Juneau. Would rather book independent instead of through Carnival. Any recommendations? We are in port 1pm to 10 pm on Thursday May 26th.

  9. I posted this on the Carnival forum, but thought I may get a more accurate answer over here.

My father and I are cruising on the Legend in May to Alaska. I was thinking of surprising him with dinner in the steakhouse one evening. But he is not a man that likes to dress up at all. I know that in general the dress on Alaska cruises is more casual, but wasn't sure if that carried over to the steakhouse or not. Would he be too under-dressed in jeans and a flannel shirt?

  11. Thanks for the quick responses. I actually hope that I don't have to take him. I had to to take emergency placement of my grandson. I am hoping that his mother does what is needed to be able to get him back.

I would much rather put the money I would need to spend to take him with me to Alaska toward a trip to Disney or something like that when he is actually old enough to remember it:)

  12. Looking at booking this type of cabin on the Legend. I know there will be a life boat in front of the window. Which one has a better 'view ;)'-being by the front of the lifeboat, or by the back of it? Checked the cruiselinerrooms website, but there were not any pictures of cabins by the ends of the lifeboats.

  13. I was looking at booking a cruise on the Legend. I want to book an interior room with the french doors. There will be 2 of us traveling. If I book this and we get bumped because it is a cabin for 3 passengers, what type of cabin would they move us to? They wouldn't move us to a regular inside would they? Thought I would check on here to see if anyone has had this happen, and what type of cabin they were moved to.

  14. Don't forget to bring some sunscreen. I managed to get a nice sunburn on my face on our Tracy Arm day. Spent the majority of the day out on deck taking in all the scenery. The thought of needing it in a 'cold weather' destination never crossed my mind. Lesson Learned :o

  15. If your son really wants to go on a whale watch, you can get a cheaper price booking an independent tour instead of going through the ship. In 2011, we went with Orca Enterprises and had an AMAZING time. It was the highlight of the trip for me. Capt Larry was the best and the naturalist on board with us was also very fun and informative. Their prices for this season are $125 per person. Another advantage of independent vs the ship tour is you are on a smaller boat so it is less crowded and closer to the water, better for viewing. Their office was an easy walk from the ship. It is across the street from Tram and close to Tracy's Crab Shack-YUM!!! Hoping to convince my father to go back to Alaska in 2015, and another tour with Capt Larry will be one of the first excursions we book:)

  16. I'm sure Carnival appreciates you believing that, however, in some "desperate" areas (California) where they no longer have the EVERY week run to the Mexican Riviera and have difficulty filling even the cheapy 3 and 4 day cruises on their old Fantasy class ships, you have to mention another site to get that site's NO SINGLE SUPPLEMENT price in order for Carnival to agree to that price. Otherwise, Carnival will continue to price single cruisers at Double the DO rate.

Cruising the Imagination on a 4-dayer to Catalina and Mexico for $199 with NO SINGLE SUPPLEMENT on January 26th (know of a couple that paid $199 each for the same cruise).

That is the same price that is available on Carnival's site for a solo traveler. Starting in October, they had many short cruises with no single suppliment. I took one of them in Nov to the Bahamas. $169 for an oceanview on Sensation.

  17. Hope you enjoy your cruise. Please come back and let us know what your first Solo cruise was like. Just booked my first solo cruise today. It isn't until early November. Could not pass it up since Carnival was not charging a single supplement, and I had enough airline points to get my flight for free.

  18. Here are some pics from my May cruise on Spirit this season.

I was surprised at how deep the snow still was toward the summit. We went through several snow banks that were still well over 6 ft deep
