  1. Everybody keeps talking about going up and down some hills to get to the vendors. Is it really that big of a deal? My family has booked LFK for our upcoming cruise and we're supposed to find the drivers over that hill. Is there some reason we should pay the $2 per person to take us to them?

What is the $2 charge you mentioned? Can you pay to be dropped offeherr the tours. Are

Sorry. I read to the end of the post and got the answer?

  3. On our Royal cruise I did not use my coffee card as much as on other ships. The Royal has fresh brewed coffee in the dining rooms and the Horizon court too! It was great! I only used punches for an occasional latte and we did go by Scoops one night and indulged in their heavenly sundaes!

What else can you use your coffee card for other than coffee? Thanks

  4. Check out Rick Steves' guide books. He is great. There is tons to do and to see. Cheap and fresh lunch at Pret A Manger shops all over town. Tube is safe and easy to use. Get a Streetwise London street map online or at Barnes and Noble stores.

The East London we are stopping at is in South Africa. I don't think Rick Steves has a book for this area and am pretty sure there is no tube. Easy mistake, but thanks for the info.

  5. Firstly, thank you for all the info on this post I have learnt such a lot.

We are on a cruise starting in Capetown, we have a day and a half at the beginning of the cruise and half a day at the end so want to fit in as much as possible and would like to include Boulders Beach, can we get there from a stop on the HoHo bus or do we need to do a tour?

Our next port of call is East London and we don't fancy any of the tours offered from the ship, have you any recommendations for what me might do please?

    Thanks.

We are also looking for ideas for East London. Have you come up with any? Thanks

  6. We will be on a cruise (Asia and Africa) where many of the tours are requesting getting paid in US dollars. As I would prefer not to take so much money with me is it possible to get US dollars on the ship? Either added to my account and paid with my credit card or with an ATM machine. Thanks Much

  7. We arrive in Phuket tomorrow. According to Princess information, your options to get from the ship to town are a ship's bus for $49. or a taxi for from $50 to $70 depending on your bargaining abilities. Can we just walk from the ship to the dockyard gates and get a tuk tuk or some more reasonable transportation than that? One of the Thai crewmembers says we can but I would like a second opinion. By the wayl we are on the Ocean Princess from Rome to Singapore and enjoying the cruise.

We leave on this cruise in a few weeks. What do you recommend for Phuket? Thanks

  8. Thanks again - your information is absolutely so valuable to me in planning our time in Dubai. We have decided to follow all your suggestions as it looks like that is the best way to maximize our time. Love the idea of a water tour too.

Anytime you think of anything else we should do (or not waste our time on) - please let me know.

  9. Dubai is very easy to do on your own. If you do want to experience something different from the malls and restaurants, do an activity at the Sh. Mohammed Center for Cultural Understanding. They offer breakfast and lunch times where you actually have an opportunity to chat with Emirati people and ask what ever questions you may have. They also do walking tours in the old heritage neighborhood along the creek. The center is an easy taxi ride from the port.

When I have disembarked at the port there have been the Big Bus tours waiting and there are two different routes.

There are also tour companies that go out to the desert for dune bashing.

If you are there for more than one night, be sure to go to Abu Dhabi to visit the Sh. Zayed Grand Mosque. It is exceptional and there are free tours given in the morning. Modest dress is required. Happy to answer any other questions. Enjoy your cruise!

Thanks so much for the information. I feel more comfortable with seeing Dubai on our own. We will need to change money before we can get on a Big Bus tour, but that might be the way to go if it stops at the places we want to see.
