THANK YOU so much for the information on Twin Limo. I called them
this morning and have it all set up for pick up at the airport and then
again to the pier.
Embassy suites offers transportation for their guests but cannot/will not
provide accessible transportation for the guests that need it. (the
embassy suites in Ft.Lauderdale said the same thing)
so I am so happy that you were able to assist me in finding accessible
transportion.
thank you so much.

I use a insulin pen- so my needles are pretty small and have a plastic
cap over it when I am done. the diabetic educator said to just use a heavy
plastic container like a laundry soap container to put the needles in. when
it is filled they suggest taping it shut and putting it in the trash. I will not
do that. when the time comes I will call the trash dude and ask them what
they want me to do with the container.

I use a mobility scooter and need to find a car service/taxi/limo that has a lift to take me from the airport to the embassy suite on October 31st and then to
bayonne on November 1st.
any suggestions would be welcomed.
thank you

I purchased a travel size sharps container on amazon. I take it with me on trips and then when I get home I empty it into my larger container so it is ready to go for the next trip.
I do not like the containers the steward provide.
it is a small red box with a long slit and I found my needles kept falling out.
so I would deposit used needles in the bathroom sharp boxes.

when I was on the serenade in april I found that all of the individual accessible bathrooms had sharps boxes in them.

I use a mobility scooter. Does any one know of a taxi/car service that is accessible (has a lift.) I need transportation from the airport to the embassy suites on Oct 31 and then from the embassy suites to bayonne the next day.
I asked the hotel for any suggestions and they were not able to help me.
I appreciate any help/suggestions .
thank you so much

I had no problem getting around with my scooter. the problem with the straw market is most of the booths have a step up so I was only able to see what
they had to offer from the outside. there is one building before the straw
market that is very accessible.
watch out for the sand. some areas are really packed and had no trouble
but there are some areas are the sand is loose and not scooter friendly.

I am staying at the embassy suites/ ft. Lauderdale in December. they have a shuttle from the hotel to the ship for around $16.00 I asked if they could handle my scooter and they told me they could not. Instead they gave me a name of a taxi service that can handle the scooter. Of course it will be more expensive.

I requested a frig on my april cruise for my meds. I was assured that one would be in my cabin. of course when I got to my cabin it wasn't there. I asked my attendant and he said there were none available. so just because
you requested a frig from the special needs department doesn't gty that you
will have one.

regarding requesting a sharps container and ref. in your cabin
I was on the serenade in April and two weeks before the cruise I called the special needs department requesting the above items. they said no problem.
when I got to the cabin of course neither were there. I asked the cabin attendant and he said there were no ref. available and he would get something for the needles and lancets. what he brought was a joke- it was a small red plastic box with a slit across the top.
I did find sharps containers in all the accessible bathroooms so that is where I disposed my needle and lancets instead of using the box the attendant gave me.

I had a cruise scheduled two wks after I was diagnosed and I called rccl
to cancel the drink package and they refunded the money back to my credit
card.

I have done several solo cruises and several with husband or sister. I truly love solo cruising. I can do what I want- when I want.
I always choose set dining at a large table so I can meet people.
the only times I have felt uncomfortable has been at a couple of ports when I ventured out on my own. That has only happened twice- once I returned to the ship and the second time I hooked up with a couple of nice ladies I had breakfast with that morning.
My favorite ship is the serenade.

in april I cruised out of new Orleans. I had care vacation deliver a scooter to my hotel. I made arrangements for transportation from the hotel to the ship
the next day (it wasn't cheap). When the cruise was over I left the scooter on the ship and used wheel chair assistance getting off the ship to a taxi. At the airport I used wheel chair assistance all the way home.
This was the first time I had a scooter at the hotel and I truly enjoyed the freedom of being able to go out and do some siteseeing. I would definitely do
that again.
Make sure you request a handicap room at the hotel. Also verify that you have the room the day before you arrive. On my last trip I had called three times to verify. When I arrived at the hotel at 1:00 they had already given my "reserved" room away.

I was on two cruises in april and was not able to get any carb information. when I felt I couldn't meet the carbs I needed I would ask my waiter for a side
of potatoes. every meal wasn't perfect but I was able to keep my blood sugars fairly stable the whole trip.

I just got back from a b2b cruise. I called rccl special needs to request a sharps box and ref. they said no problem would be in my cabin. when I got to my cabin neither were there. I talked to the cabin attendant and he said there are no ref. just the "cooler" which was not cool enough. he would get me a sharps container. well it wasn't a sharps container- just a small red box with a slit. I did find "a true" sharp containers in all the accessible bathrooms so i ended up using those containers. next time i will bring my own container (found a travel size one on amazon)
as far as keeping the extra pen cold i had the attendant keep me supplied with ice and used it to keep it cold. the "cooler" was not cold enough. i didn't think about asking the medical dept about storing the extra pen for me (don't even know if that is an option)

I agree sign up before you go esp. if there is a group. I didn't on the last cruise and was put on a wait list. I was notified a couple of hrs before the dinner that they had an open slot.
-
it isn't always the first night. I am attending the mystery theater on the serenade next month and it is on the 5th night (I think). I don't thing it is offerednon all ships or cruises. I am doing a b2b and it hasn't been offered on
the second cruise

I was in Halifax and St John last October (was suppose to be in Bermuda but that is another story)
I agree with xxoocruiser- Halifax has a lovely very accessible harbor walk and there are places to shop along the way. Beware I have been to Halifax twice in October and it can be really cold and windy so bring a hat, gloves and warm jacket. There is a lot of nice shopping in the terminal and also some things at the farmer's market.
St John has this really neat series of walk way that connects to several "malls" from the bottom of the hill to the top at the market. This way you don't have to scoot up/down the hill -plus you are inside. The first time I visited St John's I did an accessible tour set up thru RCCL- it was highlights of the town. There is also a tent by the port that has some vendors.
I visited Portland a couple of yrs ago and did a Hop on Hop off bus around the town. I did not get off the bus . The bus driver was very nasty/mean to me.
even a few people on the bus made a comment about his attitude. There were
a lot of nice vendors near the port.
I hope this helps

on my cruise in October I also did a b2b and advanced to diamond plus after the first week. I went to the crown and anchor desk on the first day
of the second cruise and she was able to update my status to diamond plus.

I enjoyed it on the explorer. the food and service was great. the entertainment hokey but funny. my only complaint it was a long evening.

map70065- thank you so much for the advise. I don't plan on going out at night so not to worried about the crowds/drunks. my main goal is the cathedral and the French market and of course café du monde. I love watching all the street artist. I am really looking forward to scooting round
and seeing the sites.

map70065- I will also be in new Orleans in april. I am staying at the bourbon Orleans. I love your suggestions for Jackson square. I use a
mobility scooter. how accessible is the area
thanks for all your advice/suggestions

I am so sorry to hear of you diagnoses. my husband had colon cancer and we cruised 7 times while he was on chemo. he received chemo every two
weeks so we would try to cruise the second week. we always had our doctor's
blessing.
you need to be careful with the heat and sun. you also must hydrate- that is very important. get lots of rest.
be sure and bring a copy of your chemo drugs and any other meds you are taking. make sure you bring your meds that you are taking (bring a few extra you never know when you might be delayed somewhere.)
I say go (if doc approves) and have a great time
Can anyone help with ideas for spinal stenosis?

i would definitely rent a scooter for her. if she doesn't want a scooter then
rent a wheelchair but make sure you get a gel pad for the seat.
I was on a land tour in august (using a scooter) and the pain was so bad all I wanted to do was go home. When I returned home i went to my neurosurgeon. When I told him I had two cruises scheduled for November and December he told me to cancel them.
I am not a candidate for surgery so I am scheduled to meet with the pain
management people to see what can be done. Hopefully my cruising days
aren't over.
